The Unspoken Truth: How Emotions Make or Break Your Meetings

from Confessions of a Facilitation Artist · host Monica Joy Krol

Hey there! Today, I'm sharing some raw thoughts on the delicate balance between productivity and human connection in meetings and workshops. The Power of Emotions in MeetingsEver wondered why some meetings leave you feeling drained, while others energize you? It all comes down to emotions. In my effective meetings workshop, I use the Feelings Wheel to illustrate this point. When participants recall meetings without clear agendas, their emotions often cluster around "sad," "mad," or "scared." They feel skeptical, confused, and anxious. Conversely, when thinking about well-structured meetings, emotions shift towards "joyful" and "powerful." People feel aware, successful, and valuable. The Importance of Clear AgendasA clear agenda isn't just about organization—it's about creating psychological safety and trust. As the saying goes (which is often attributed to Russell Brunson), "A confused mind will always say no." Without clarity, participants may mentally check out before the meeting even begins. My Personal Struggle: Productivity vs. ValueHere's where I get vulnerable: I've long equated productivity with value. This drive has made me efficient, but it's also created pressure. I'm learning to channel this energy into creating purposeful, human-centered meetings.Finding the BalanceThe key is to design meetings that are both productive and emotionally intelligent. We need to:* Set clear expectations with well-crafted agendas* Create space for human connection and vulnerability* Recognize that efficiency without empathy can be counterproductiveMore Ways to Connect and LearnThe next few posts will dive deeper into into creating effective, human-centered meetings.
