Toot Your Own Horn: Music Matters with David Young (Episode 16)

from Toot Your Own Horn: Music Matters · host Lisa's Clarinet Shop

David Young didn't grow up in a musical family. But from an early age, he just loved the sound of music. Having been told the flute was a girls instrument, David started on the saxophone and before high school was over, had learned to play clarinet flute and saxophone. It was a family friend who drove him to sax lessons, with Fred Hemke, that sealed his desire to pursue music as a career. And, although he attended Northwestern University for music, he was making money performing as a doubler that he never actually finished. It was a fluke that he learned oboe for a show, which in the end was the most important instrument of all for him to learn as it cemented his career, bringing him to New York, Broadway, and to an endless stream of work. This episode is airing on Christmas Day, and it could not be a more fun ride learning about David Young music career. I hope you will consider giving yourself the gift of music and that this episode inspires you to!
