Toot Your Own Horn with Duke Smith-Holley (Episode 29)

from Toot Your Own Horn: Music Matters · host Lisa's Clarinet Shop

In this captivating episode of Toot Your Own Horn: Music Matters, we sit down with the multi-talented Duke Smith-Holley, a passionate musician and dedicated saxophone technician hailing from New Zealand. Duke’s journey into the world of music began as a young boy, ignited by a chance encounter with a saxophone at a music store with his grandparents. While the piano may not have been his calling, a rented tenor saxophone during high school opened the door to his musical pursuits. Inspired by the legendary saxophonist Brian Travers of UB40, Duke dove into the world of transcription, covering his hero’s solos and playing in various cover bands, all while honing his remarkable ear for music. Although not a formal music major, Duke's unwavering love for playing kept the rhythm of his life alive. Beyond performing, Duke has established himself as a skilled audio technician since the age of 15. Recently, he has expanded his repertoire to include repairing saxophones, eventually launching his own successful repair shop. Duke’s story is a testament to the idea that while music may not always be a primary income source, the passion and joy it brings can lead to fulfilling careers in unexpected ways. Join us as we explore Duke's inspiring journey, the challenges he's faced, and the joy of helping fellow musicians play better. Tune in to discover how the saxophone not only shaped Duke’s life but also created a unique pathway for him to contribute to the music community he loves!
