Rebbi Eliezer ben Parata lived after Gamliel who had the slave Tevi, so Gamliel cannot be used as a counter-proof to the idea that Jews did in fact continue to own slaves. However, it is clear from the story itself that it was common for Jews to own slaves or else Rebbi Eliezer would not have been singled out for this accusation.
