Toxic Empathy/Compassion

We are commanded to have compassion. It is also good to have empathy toward others. However, is it possible that those attributes can become "toxic" to us? We browse through a few examples in the scriptures where Christ sets some sort of limit on the compassion/empathy that He shows to others.
