Anthony was a social reformer and women's rights activist born into a Quaker family, which sparked her passion for social equality. She collaborated with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a fellow activist, on various campaigns, including temperance reform and anti-slavery activities. Anthony was arrested for voting in violation of laws that only allowed men to vote, but her trial became a crucial step in the transition from the women's rights movement to the women's suffrage movement. She travelled extensively, gave speeches, and helped found international women's organizations.
