Hello from CNN, I'm Jo Beck, with the five things you need to know for Thursday, January 23rd. President Donald Trump has had a busy first few days in the White House. He started cracking down on immigration, issued pardons, and put employees in all diversity, equity and inclusion programs on paid administrative leave. We asked CNN's Elena Treen what we've learned from Trump's quick start.
While President Donald Trump is acting swiftly on his campaign promises, moving at the fastest club in modern memory and really sending almost hourly shockwaves through the government and the legal system, the health community and beyond. Now, his conservative overhaul is likely only getting started, especially when you consider that only one member of his cabinet, Marco Rubio, Secretary of State, has been confirmed. And I want to keep in mind as well, is that much of the early actions we've seen Donald Trump take since Monday has been targeted toward appeasing his base. You look at the January 6th part and it's the focus on gutting DEI ordering thousands of active beauty trips to the border.
This is something that Donald Trump said he wanted to do on day one to really fulfill his promises to his peer supporters. Meanwhile, Trump's pick space administration continued to come under scrutiny and send its confirmation hearings. CNN's Lauren Fox has more on recent questions around Pete Higgsoth, the controversial choice for defense secretary. Yes, CNN has learned that Samantha Higgsoth, the ex-wife of Pete Higgsoth, provided recently a statement to the FBI about Pete Higgsoth's drinking habits, according to two sources familiar with the situation.
We know that she told the FBI that Pete drinks more often than he doesn't. Now, Higgsoth has denied any wrongdoing and his lawyer told CNN there's nothing new here and we look forward to the confirmation vote. Higgsoth has repeatedly said that he has never had an alcohol problem. Samantha Higgsoth, meanwhile, has not responded to requests for comment from CNN.
Authorities looking for the motive in a high school shooting in Nashville are looking at online writings and social media posts tied to the teenage suspect. According to CNN affiliate WTVF and the Tennesseean newspaper, some contain racist, violent, and anti-Semitic content, and laid out detailed plans for the shooting. Police say 17-year-old student Solomon Henderson fired multiple rounds inside the high school's cafeteria, killing a 16-year-old girl and wounding a 17-year-old before he killed himself. This student who attended a church service after the attack said she saw everything.
Right now, it's eating the up on the inside and I can't close my eyes without seeing him laying on the floor. The school shooting is the first of 2025, according to CNN's database, and it was partially streamed on kick, but the Australian platforms, as the accountant video, were, quote, rapidly banned. A world-first study suggests that those diagnosed with ADHD have a lower life expectancy and are at a higher risk of mental health issues. People with ADHD may feel restless, all struggle with concentrating, staying organized, hyper-focusing, all controlling their impulses.
Research published today in the British Journal of Psychiatry found women diagnosed with ADHD had a life expectancy that was up to 11 years shorter, while for diagnosed men, it was up to nine years. One of the authors said that people with ADHD often lack support and are more likely to experience stressful life events and social exclusion, impacting their health and self-esteem. Up next, why some Instagram users haven't been able to unfollow President Donald Trump? Some social media users, say Meta, won't let them unfollow President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D.
Vance, and First Lady Melania Trump. Celebrities like Demi Lovato and Gracie Abrams have posted complaints that their requests to stop following the official VP and POTUS Instagram accounts haven't worked. Meta has denied that people are being forced to follow the U.S. leaders and said the delay in unfollow requests being approved is because the company is transitioning control of the accounts from the Biden administration to Trump's team.
That's all for now. We'll have more news for you at noon, Easton.
