Carlos Angel, Former General Manager of Uber, shares his story of building Uber Colombia to a billion dollar business in 3 years. Carlos grew up in Columbia, the oldest of 3. His parents were entrepreneurs so he spent most of his time with his younger sisters. His family have all been entrepreneurs for the last 5 generations. To come to Columbia from Spain, you had to have some of the entrepreneurial spirit to make a new life. In his family, the “traditional path” was the abnormal choice. At 18, he began traveling. He studied in Australia for 4 years. It was a difficult transition to go from being in a town where he was surrounded by his extended family and spent every weekend with them to being in a different country and not having any family. It opened his eyes and helped him to see life from a different perspective. His college experience focused on the liberal arts and he learned a lot of philosophy, politics, and about the human condition. He learned that he enjoyed thinking. This has helped him to think in different ways and be adaptable as an entrepreneur. He can think fast and make quick changes, but because he learned to think slowly and deeply he can think about his business in a different way. Carlos also had the opportunity to study at the University of Chicago and earned his MBA. Among other things, he learned the idea of the sum costs philosophy that says that we suffer mentally in the present because of decisions we made in the past. We can learn to dig in and think better about how we made decisions.
