Uncle Ben's Remedy: Honky-Tonk Boogie, Northern Appalachia & "All Hat No Cattle" from Western New York Ep 32

from Bands You've Never Heard Of · host Adam JR Stoffel

JR kicks this one off differently — no intro, no bio, no warning. He just lets Uncle Ben's Remedy walk through the door and introduce themselves with "Jesus Never Took the Wheel." Gary's first words: "I think they're the remedy for sobriety." And we're off.Uncle Ben's Remedy is a five-piece roots rock band out of Western New York who sound like they were raised somewhere between a honky-tonk and a bluegrass festival in the Allegheny hills. Boogie-woogie piano, chicken-pickin' guitar, pedal steel, fiddle, and some of the most inventive harmonic choices Gary has heard from a band playing this kind of music. In part one, JR walks Gary through the full range — from tearjerkers like Gone Home and Black Jacket to absolute floor-stompers like Pedal to the Metal and All Hat No Cattle. In part two, Ben and Sean join from Revolver Records in Buffalo (mid-session, phone barely charged, Josh the drummer wandering in from downstairs) to talk about what it means to be a Western New York band that sounds like the South, how Sean's master's degree in music is secretly responsible for all those chord progressions, who sings that haunting harmony on Gone Home, and why the best divorce song in Buffalo was recorded with the songwriter's wife.Head to YouTube (search @bynhopod) to watch with full lyrics on screen.Links:Uncle Ben's Remedy: https://www.unclebensremedy.comEvery band we've ever featured: https://bynhopod.comComplete BYNHOPod playlist: search "Bands You've Never Heard Of" on SpotifyEmail us: [email protected] the show & merch: https://bynhopod.com (click "Support")Spotify Chapters:0:00 - Cold Open: Uncle Ben's Remedy Introduce Themselves4:01 - Welcome + Gary's First Take: "Remedy for Sobriety"5:32 - Band Bio: Western New York, Southern Boogie & a School Bus Tour11:15 - "Paradise" — The Mustard and the Mayonnaise15:02 - Gary Reacts: Appalachian Vibes & That Chorus Transition18:08 - "Drink to Remember" — Instant Foot-Stomper20:01 - Gary Reacts: Hackensaw Boys Energy21:00 - "Hard Times"25:33 - Gary Reacts: Better Live, Still Inventive27:40 - "Gone Home" — Pedal Steel & a Haunting Harmony30:07 - Gary Reacts: Who Is Singing That Harmony?34:28 - "Black Jacket" — Ray Manzarek on an Old Upright37:02 - Gary Reacts: No Right to Be This Thoughtful39:20 - "Pedal to the Metal" — Their First Song Ever44:23 - "Never Get Caught" — Off the 2024 Album47:37 - Gary Reacts: Too Many Instruments for 5 Guys49:00 - "All Hat No Cattle" — Their Biggest Song52:11 - Ben's Shorts & Crocs: The Aesthetic Checks Out55:28 - INTERVIEW: Ben & Sean Join from Revolver Records in Buffalo1:00:10 - Have They Toured Beyond the Northeast?1:01:08 - Album #7 in 2026: What's Different?1:03:12 - Five Guys, Ten Instruments: How?1:06:09 - Josh the Drummer Shows Up From Downstairs1:07:14 - Set Lists: Bangers vs. Ballads Live1:09:23 - Harmony's Real Name Is Harmony (Sister's Named Pearl)1:10:01 - The Western New York Twang: Fake or Natural?1:13:00 - Country?
