Unqualified Employees

In Matthew 9:9-13, a most unlikely person is called to follow Jesus: a tax collector. This is a surprising move once you know who these men were. Their occupation was used side-by-side with "sinner". But Matthew responds, leaves everything and joins Jesus' crew. But the Pharisees observe this and don't like it. So they question Jesus' disciples and Jesus gives an amazing answer that not only justifies his calling of Matthew but also clarifies his mission and clarifies the heart of God. That said, one of the main take aways for us is to make sure we know that we are the sinners in need of God's grace, rather than be like the self-righteous Pharisees. Such humility helps us join Jesus in His mission to heal the spiritually sick.
