Unshakable: Faith that Speaks (Pt2) - James 3:1-18

James 1 - we can be unshakable because of the wisdom of God James 2 - we can be unshakable by faith in what we do. James 3 - we can be unshakable with our speech. Matt. 12:34 “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” 3 primary characteristics of an unshakable faith that speaks: 1) Faith Speaks with Maturity (3:1-5) 2) Faith Speaks with Consistency (3:6-12) 3) Faith Speaks with Purity (3:13-18) KEY PHRASE - "the wisdom from above is first pure" - Purity has the right deeds (13-16) Our Wisdom is revealed in our habits (13) Our Habits reveal our heart (14) Our Heart reveals either heaven or hell (15-16) - Purity has the right seeds (17-18) It is ‘pure’ - free from everything that characterizes false wisdom. It is ‘peaceable’- delights in peace and promotes peace. It is ‘gentle’- not combative and abrasive. It is reasonable and courteous. It is ‘open to reason’ - willing to yield, open to reason, and doesn’t insist on its rights. It is ‘full of mercy’ - showing compassion to those who are in need. It is ‘full of … good fruits’ - rich in Christ-like living It is ‘impartial’ - not showing favoritism. It is ‘sincere’ - sincere and genuine, mature, consistent, and pure. Application: 1. Pray - repent from your actions and receive God’s wisdom Spend extended time in confession over your speech. Consecrate your mouth. 2. Practice - list the ways you sin with your mouth: lying, complaining, swearing, gossiping, boasting, whining, criticizing, etc. For each of these, find a Godly replacement: Truth-telling, thanking, blessing, praising, encouraging, cheering, etc. Each day, consciously practice each one. 3. Parole - Put your tongue on parole. Release your tongue on the promise of good behavior. Force it to meet with an accountability partner (Parole officer) every week. Tell others what you are working on, and have them call you to account.
