from ABC News Top Stories · host ABC Australia
The United States has begun an effort to guide stranded ships from the Iran‑blocked Strait of Hormuz, as it tries to counter economic disruption amid the ongoing ceasefire with Iran, with no peace deal yet in sight. Tehran has warned the U.S. Navy against entering the strait, saying the passage of ships through it must be coordinated with Iranian forces. Meanwhile, the British military says a tanker has been hit by unknown projectiles in the strait, with all crew reported safe. A synagogue leader has told the Royal Commission into antisemitism and social cohesion his congregants have felt unsafe attending services due to regular abuse. Chief Rabbi Benjamin Elton from Sydney's Great Synagogue has appeared at the first day of public hearings, detailing how staff have received threatening phone calls. He's also told the inquiry Jewish congregants are being punished for the actions of Israel, with the synagogue the target of protesters and a hoax terror threat. The WA Government is set to introduce new laws to ban no‑grounds evictions, bringing the state in line with most of the rest of the country. WA and the Northern Territory are the only jurisdictions where landlords can terminate a lease for no reason. The Real Estate Institute of WA has argued the change may drive away investors, while the move has been welcomed by charity group Anglicare.
