Walking on Water and Trampling Over Death

from Griggs Church Sermons · host Griggs Church

John 6:16-21 Why did Jesus do some miracles and not others? Why did he walk on water? What does that mean? Well, in the first century, water, specifically the sea, symbolized death. Everyone had to deal with the sea for fish and trade, just like everyone has to deal with death. And the sea was known for its unpredictable storms, which was a reminder of how death could come at any moment. John tells us in the last verse of the book that he is writing that we might believe in Jesus and find LIFE in his name. So he includes the story of Jesus walking on water to show us that the sea (really, death itself) does not have a hold on Jesus and Jesus' people. Instead, Jesus triumphs over death and brings us safely to shore. Thank you for learning alongside us. Let us know how we can pray for you. We are a revitalizing church in the Poe Mill neighborhood of Greenville, SC. Our mission is to make disciples that transform our neighborhood with the gospel of Jesus. Our vision is to see Jesus-centered living, church revitalization, and neighborhood-based missions happening in Poe Mill, West Greenville, and beyond!
