West Virginia Weather 3/7 Evening - Dance Party Downpour

from The West Virginia Weather Podcast

Good evening. West Virginia. I'm Michael Nally. That sticky, muggy air clinging to you? it's the last gasp of summer-like heat before a wild week hits. We picked up nearly two tenths of an inch of rain overnight. And temperatures are *still* hovering near 60 degrees at midnight. But don't get too comfortable. That warmth is about to get swept away. **here's what's headed our way.** A broken line of showers and thunderstorms is marching east statewide right now. Central West Virginia is ground zero for the action. Expect heavy downpours and rumbles of thunder through 11 P.M. Temperatures will actually rise overnight to near 61 degrees, fueled by soupy air ahead of a cold front. Southwest winds at 6 to 9 miles an hour keep things breezy, gusting up to 21 miles an hour at times. **Down in Southern West Virginia**, the story is similar but with a foggy twist. Thunderstorms roll through until about 1 A.M., then patchy fog takes over. Visibilities could drop quickly in the river valleys. Lows hover in the mid-50s, which feels more like May than early March. **Up in the Northern Panhandle**, it's a steadier, cooler soak. Rain showers likely continue through sunrise, keeping temperatures stuck in the mid-50s. Gusts up to 24 miles an hour will make it feel raw by dawn. **Sunday brings a reset.** The front clears out by daybreak, leaving sunshine and seasonable 60s. Central WV hits 67, the Panhandle tops out at 63. And the south lands at 62. But don't stash the jackets just yet. Sunday night drops into the 40s statewide under clear skies. A sharp contrast to tonight's tropical vibes. **Looking at the week ahead. ** We're on a temperature rollercoaster. Monday and Tuesday bring back the summer preview. Highs surge to the mid-70s—that's nearly 30 degrees above normal for early March. But then. Wednesday brings the reckoning. A powerful cold front slams in with thunderstorms and a 30-degree temperature crash by Thursday. Highs plummet from the 80s Wednesday to the upper 40s Thursday, with rain changing to snow in the higher elevations. Mountain snow is possible just 13 days before spring. Roads could turn slick fast, especially since recent rains washed away any lingering salt treatments. Enjoy the warmth while it lasts. By midweek, we're trading flip-flops for frost warnings. See you tomorrow.
