West Virginia Weather 3/7 Evening - Thunderstorms Starting 9 PM

from The West Virginia Weather Podcast

Good evening. West Virginia. I'm Michael Nally. Folks, that wasn't just spring warmth today. It was history. Highs shattered records statewide, soaring into the low 80s in spots. But you likely noticed the dramatic ending — a line of storms packing heavy downpours and gusty winds rolled through this afternoon. Now the show winds down, but you'll want to stay alert. Central West Virginia sits at 56 degrees with thunderstorms rumbling until about 11 PM. Those southwest winds at 6 to 9 miles an hour could gust up to 21, so secure that trash can. Down in Southern West Virginia, the storms hang on a bit longer — expect rumbles until around 1 AM, with lows hovering near 54. Watch for patchy fog developing in the valleys after midnight. Up in the Northern Panhandle, it's a steadier, lighter rain overnight with temps holding near 54, but those gusts to 24 miles an hour will make it feel blustery. Sunday brings a split personality. The front clears early, leaving Southern and Central regions with clearing skies and highs in the mid-60s — perfect for a late-winter hike. The Northern Panhandle holds onto the chill, struggling to hit 63 degrees. By Sunday night, everyone clears out and cools down, with lows dropping to the low 40s statewide. Then comes the wild midweek swing. Monday and Tuesday feel like early summer, hitting the mid-70s. But Wednesday delivers a gut punch. A powerful cold front sweeps in, dropping temperatures 40 degrees in 24 hours. We're talking upper 70s on Wednesday. Crashing to the upper 40s by Thursday. The higher elevations could even see snow Thursday morning. If you're traveling the mountains Wednesday night, watch for slick spots — recent rains washed away the road salt. Spring arrives in 13 days, but winter isn't quite done with us yet. See you tomorrow.
