What Are Societal Expectations?

What exactly are societal expectations and why do they exist? Often we think of them as the “supposed to be life”. What society says we are supposed to do. Just go to college find a partner and job, get married and carry on with life. But millennials and every generation to come after them is not settling for this lifestyle. We jump from job to job and relationship to relationship and older generations don’t agree or understand. We will not settle for mediocrity or unhappiness.
