Cecil Hotel | Episode 29 | Simply Strange

    Release Date: 11/27/2019

Description: The Cecil Hotel was opened in 1927 by hotelier William Banks Hanner. Hanner envisioned the hotel as a West Coast getaway for the aristocratic elite. However, his plan was never quite given the opportunity to come to fruition. Soon after the Cecil Hotel opened it's doors, The Great Depression struck and the Cecil's halls began to fill with vagrants, addicts, and worse. Before long, the Cecil Hotel began to be known not for it's socially elite clientele, but instead for the seemingly endless stream of tragedies that began to occur there. Cecil's Own Book by Ann Hawkshaw (1812 - 1885)

    Release Date: 03/14/2021

    Authors: LibriVox

Description: Ann Hawkshaw's fourth and final collection was published privately and named for her young grandson, Cecil Wedgwood. Written for children, the volume alternates prose with poetry and is lighter in tone than her earlier work, although poems such as 'The Discontented Stream' and 'The Ambitious Water-Lily' are tinged with a sense of waste. The final piece in the collection, 'In Memoriam', is a moving elegy on childhood death, which alludes to Hawkshaw's loss of three children including Cecil's mother who died shortly after his birth. - Summary by Phil Benson
