What Hurts Today? Ask Dr. Miho Tanaka!

from Midday · host WYPR 88.1 FM Baltimore

Early on Saturday morning, June 2, several thousand runners are expected to turn out for the start of the Baltimore Ten-Miler. It’ll be the tenth running of this challenging and scenic marathon -- which starts and finishes near Druid Hill Lake Park -- and, as happens when a lot of folks hit the pavement in varying states of marathon-fitness, there will be a quite a few twisted ankles, sore knees and strained backs...not just during the hour-long race but for days or weeks afterward. Fortunately, Dr. Miho Tanaka joins Tom in the studio to talk about how you can avoid serious injuries on marathon day and how you can relieve some of the inevitable aches that follow a big run. Not into marathons? Dr. Tanaka also discusses the importance of an active lifestyle -- involving all kinds of exercise -- to living a longer, healthier life. Dr. Tanaka is an orthopedic surgeon and the Director of the Women’s Sports Medicine Program at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Before moving to Baltimore, she was the team physician for the St. Louis Cardinals and the St Louis Surge in the WNBA. She’s also served as assistant team physician for the Baltimore Orioles and another professional women’s basketball team, the NY Liberty. Dr. Tanaka also takes your questions about fitness, training and how to avoid and treat sports injuries.Email us at [email protected], tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.
