What It Truly Means to Know God | John Calvin

from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu

Deep Dive into Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin - What It Is to Know God, and to What Purpose the Knowledge of Him TendsTrue knowledge of God is not merely an intellectual admission of His existence but a deep-seated realization of what is proper to His glory and beneficial for humanity to understand. This knowledge is inseparable from piety, which is defined as a reverence joined with the love of God that arises from acknowledging His numerous benefits. A distinction exists between the primal knowledge of God as the Creator—found in the order of nature—and the knowledge of God as the Redeemer through Christ.Central to this understanding is the conviction that God is the fountain of every good. All wisdom, light, righteousness, and power flow from Him alone. Consequently, humans should seek nothing outside of Him and should credit Him for every blessing received. Idle, speculative questions about God’s essence are dismissed; it is far more important to know what sort of God He is in relation to His creation. Since humans are His handiwork, they are bound to His command, and any life not disposed to His service is considered wickedly corrupt.A pious mind does not invent its own deity but conforms to how God manifests Himself. This mind views God as a protector and guide, leading to a state of total trust. While the pious individual recognizes God as a righteous judge who punishes wickedness, their obedience is not driven solely by the dread of punishment. Instead, because they love and revere God as a Father, they would shudder at the thought of offending Him even if there were no threat of hell. Ultimately, pure religion consists of faith joined with an earnest fear that leads to sincere, willing worship, rather than the empty ceremonies or vague veneration common among many.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@ReformedExplainerSpotify Music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1t5dz4vEgvHqUknYQfwpRI?si=e-tDRFR2Qf6By1sAcMdkdwhttps://buymeacoffee.com/edi2730

I'm a teacher, author, nature lover and for ten years I owned a coffeehouse cafe where my faith in the goodness of humans was restored every day. This podcast highlights the awesomeness of humanity - er...outside the warmongers, globalists, tyrants and politicians in general. You know, the rest of us weird, quirky and sometimes hilarious humans. We'll talk woo, probe mysteries and leave you thinking about something more interesting or entertaining or uplifting than your grocery list, or boss or that oil change your car needs. I talk too much because I can't help my Gemini moon and Leo Rising nature. I do a podcast because it's cheaper, funnier and more productive than therapy.
