What Lies behind the Law | C. S. Lewis
from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu
Deep Dive into Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis - What Lies behind the LawThe human understanding of laws must distinguish between the Laws of Nature and the Law of Human Nature. While physical laws—like those governing stones and trees—may be merely a description of how matter behaves, the moral law concerning right and wrong is fundamentally different. It is a real, inescapable law that people know they ought to obey, a standard existing above and beyond the actual facts of human conduct. This revelation about internal moral obligation helps address the fundamental question of the universe's origin, which is typically divided into two theories. The materialist view argues that matter and space merely happen to exist, and all life, including conscious human beings, arose by chance occurrences and random evolutionary flukes. In contrast, the religious view proposes that the reality behind the universe is akin to a mind—conscious, purposeful, and creating creatures capable of thought.Determining which view is correct is impossible through science, whose job is to observe and describe how things behave. Science cannot answer the metaphysical question of why the universe exists or whether a "Something Behind" it is responsible. However, the question is clarified by observing humanity itself. We have "inside information" about ourselves that we lack when observing rocks or cabbages, which is the internal awareness of the moral law we did not invent. If a controlling power exists outside the universe, it cannot be discovered as one of the facts inside the universe, just as an architect is not a wall in the house he designed. The only place such a power could reveal itself is inside us, as a command or influence trying to direct our behavior. This strongly suggests there is a power directing the universe. Because matter cannot issue instructions, this Power must be more like a mind, urging us toward right action and instilling a sense of responsibility. This conclusion, while not yet defining the God of theology, affirms a Director or Guide behind the observed facts. An alternative, often emotionally appealing, view called the Life-Force philosophy, attempts to find purpose without accepting a moral God, but ultimately fails to logically explain how a mindless force could "strive" or have "purposes."Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianhttps://buymeacoffee.com/edi2730
