"What Should I Look for in a Spouse?" (Marriage Unhindered)

from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio

Is the person you're dating right now "the one"? How do you know for sure? Don't give into anxiety - Doug Hinderer has some practical advice to take to heart.   You can get the entire hour here.    🌟 Here’s the scoop:   The Love of Friendship (Philia)    True Friendship: Picture this—your spouse as your best friend, someone who loves you just as you are. This isn't about perfect Instagram moments; it's about having someone who truly gets you and loves you unconditionally.   Shared Goals: Imagine both of you aiming for the same ultimate goal—heaven. When your life’s ultimate purpose aligns, it adds a beautiful, exciting dimension to your relationship.   Common Interests: Think about the joy of sharing activities you both love, whether it’s growing in your Catholic faith, taking serene walks, or simply holding hands. The more interests you share, the deeper your bond will be.   Conflict Resolution Skills 💬   Fight Fair: Conflict is part of the deal. What’s crucial is how you handle it. Avoid the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” - Criticism, Contempt, Stonewalling, and Defensiveness.   Constructive Disagreements: It’s about finding a partner who can argue respectfully, without needing to win every time, and who can show kindness even when the going gets tough.   Manageable Defects 💡   Acceptable Flaws: Let’s face it, everyone has defects. The key is finding someone whose flaws you can live with. It's not about fixing major issues like addictions or selfishness.   Realistic Expectations: Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you can “fix” someone. If their defects are deal breakers, it’s better to acknowledge that sooner rather than later.   Doug paints a picture of marriage as a joyful journey towards goodness and virtue, rather than a constant battle to change each other. 🌟✨   Bottom Line: Love deeply, argue kindly, and choose wisely. When done right, marriage is a beautiful adventure that brings you closer to God and each other. 💖🙏   The best way to listen to the Best of the Week is on our #1 Free Catholic App. It’s free, and always will be!
