While You Were Sleeping

Welcome to Rom Com Weekly, a conversation show discussing romantic comedies from the ‘90s to the present.  I'm Michelle, a chronic re-watcher of movies, especially rom coms. Growing up, for better or for worse, they informed the way I thought about relationships, love, and even myself. With a bit of a recent comeback of romantic comedies, I thought it’d be fun to revisit some and chat with friends of mine as we dive into all the good, the bad, and the ugly of rom com tropes.

This Christmas week, my friend Vivian returns to the podcast to chat about the Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman holiday rom-com, While You Were Sleeping (1995). While this wholesome movie is a highly rewatchable and beloved one for me, this movie fell a bit flat for Vivian. We wonder what makes a rom-com a good rom-com, how the theme of family is equally as important as the romance is in this film, Viv helps me realize how much I need to curate a specific Rom Com Weekly Spotify playlist, and we each reveal the one place we want to travel to - our "Florence."
