Prosecutors are now treating the retrial as a reset, with South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson saying all legal options are back on the table, including the death penalty, which was not pursued during the original trial. Murdaugh’s defense, led by Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, is attacking that possibility as political and unnecessary, arguing that prosecutors have not identified any new facts that would justify escalating the case.
