Why Did God Create the World? | Jonathan Edwards

from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu

Deep Dive into A Dissertation Concerning The End For Which God Created The World by Jonathan Edwards - Introduction Containing Explanations of Terms and General PositionsTo understand the purpose of creation, one must distinguish between the different types of goals, or ends, that an agent pursues. A subordinate end is sought entirely as a stepping stone to achieve something else, much like taking medicine to regain health. Conversely, an ultimate end is desired completely for its own sake, representing the final point where a person's aim rests. While all chief ends are ultimate ends, not all ultimate ends are chief ends. A chief end is the most highly valued goal among multiple ultimate ends. A subordinate end can occasionally be valued more than an unrelated ultimate end, but it can never be valued more than the specific ultimate end to which it leads. If an agent has only one ultimate end, it serves as their supreme end, surpassing all subordinate means. Ultimate ends are further divided into original and consequential categories. An original ultimate end is valued absolutely and independently of any circumstances, whereas a consequential ultimate end only becomes relevant after specific conditions are established. For example, a person might desire society as an original end, leading them to form a family, but maintaining justice within that family is a consequential end that exists only because the family was created. When applying these concepts to God, His original ultimate end is the primary, independent reason that motivated Him to bring the universe into existence. Once intelligent creatures were made, consequential ultimate ends emerged, such as God exercising His justice and faithfulness toward them. While valued for their own sake contextually, these were not the original motive for creating the universe. Whatever serves as God's overriding purpose in His providence must be the exact original ultimate end for which He designed the world.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@ReformedExplainerSpotify Music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1t5dz4vEgvHqUknYQfwpRI?si=e-tDRFR2Qf6By1sAcMdkdwhttps://buymeacoffee.com/edi2730

I'm a teacher, author, nature lover and for ten years I owned a coffeehouse cafe where my faith in the goodness of humans was restored every day. This podcast highlights the awesomeness of humanity - er...outside the warmongers, globalists, tyrants and politicians in general. You know, the rest of us weird, quirky and sometimes hilarious humans. We'll talk woo, probe mysteries and leave you thinking about something more interesting or entertaining or uplifting than your grocery list, or boss or that oil change your car needs. I talk too much because I can't help my Gemini moon and Leo Rising nature. I do a podcast because it's cheaper, funnier and more productive than therapy.
