Why God’s Ultimate Goal Is His Own Glory | Jonathan Edwards

from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu

Deep Dive into A Dissertation Concerning The End For Which God Created The World by Jonathan Edwards - Wherein It Is Considered How, on the Supposition of God's Making the Aforementioned Things His Last End, He Manifests a Supreme and Ultimate Regard to Himself in all His WorksJonathan Edwards argues that God’s ultimate purpose in creating the world is to glorify himself, which perfectly aligns with his desire to bless his creation. Because God infinitely values his own perfect nature, he naturally delights in the active expression and operation of his divine attributes. Just as a person who loves a friend's virtues wants them to be recognized, God’s love for his own excellence means he delights in having his perfections seen, esteemed, and praised by created beings. This desire leads to an abundant communication of God's internal fullness, including his knowledge, holiness, and happiness. Edwards explains that this propensity to diffuse his glory is not contrary to God being his own end, but rather represents a tendency toward his own complete and most glorious state, much like a tree naturally bringing forth fruit or the sun radiating light. When God communicates his divine knowledge to creatures, it is essentially a participation in God’s own self-knowledge, resembling smaller beams of light extending directly from the sun itself. Furthermore, when God imparts virtue and holiness to his creatures, they partake in his own divine beauty and moral excellence, which is ultimately expressed through their love and admiration for him. Likewise, the ultimate happiness granted to creatures is a shared participation in the very joy God possesses in himself.Ultimately, God's profound goal in creation involves an eternal, ever-increasing communication of his own nature to his creatures. As created beings continually grow in knowledge, love, and joy in God, they become increasingly united and conformed to him over eternity. Because the creature's interest perfectly coincides with God's own interest through this deepening union, Edwards concludes that God is both the primary first cause of all things and their ultimate last end.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@ReformedExplainerSpotify Music: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1t5dz4vEgvHqUknYQfwpRI?si=e-tDRFR2Qf6By1sAcMdkdwhttps://buymeacoffee.com/edi2730

I'm a teacher, author, nature lover and for ten years I owned a coffeehouse cafe where my faith in the goodness of humans was restored every day. This podcast highlights the awesomeness of humanity - er...outside the warmongers, globalists, tyrants and politicians in general. You know, the rest of us weird, quirky and sometimes hilarious humans. We'll talk woo, probe mysteries and leave you thinking about something more interesting or entertaining or uplifting than your grocery list, or boss or that oil change your car needs. I talk too much because I can't help my Gemini moon and Leo Rising nature. I do a podcast because it's cheaper, funnier and more productive than therapy.
