Why You Tryin' to Be White? Episode #4
from Brown & Spiritual AF · host Dr. Isela Garcia and Mark Sanchez
It's something many of us have heard if we attempt to shift away from cultural and family expectations. Self-improvement, how we raise our children, our spiritual growth, and even the goals we create for ourselves is sometimes perceived as trying to be better than us... or trying to be white. (A feature of white supremacy culture is superiority. It's fascinating, although not surprising, that the perception of "trying to be better than" others is equated to being white.) It can be incredibly challenging to break away from patterns of behaviors that are so deeply rooted in family traditions and customs. As usual, we share our personal stories about changing the script and choosing to work on becoming more self-aware in an effort to learn how to manage our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors differently. This in itself, has been lifechanging. Important Note: Developing self-awareness can be incredibly challenging if you've experienced trauma. Isela doesn't share how childhood trauma impacted her journey and it wasn't our intention to simplify the healing process. If paying attention to your thoughts and emotions is too overwhelming, we encourage you reach out to a mental health professional. They can support the process of healing... and you deserve to feel good. www.iselagarcia.com Isela's Instagram: love_being_in_truth Isela's Facebook: LoveBeingSpirituality Mark's Instagram: mark_my_magnificance Music by Mark Sanchez
