William Lamport Part 3: The Church Does not Thirst for Blood
from Bring Out Your Dead: Latin America vs. The British Empire
Join us for our Season 2 Finale! This week we delve into the final part of William Lamport's life, his 17 years in an Inquisition prison. Beginning with the spectacle of William's public trail, where Spanish Criollos watched William use his public platform to air all of his grievances against the Inquisition. Then throughout his first decade in a Mexico City dungeon, William would become a prison activist and organiser doing everything he could to protect his comrades from the appalling and violent conditions of their surroundings. We will see how on Christmas Eve 1650 William escaped from his prison and had a single night of freedom. In just one night William was able to use the Inquisition's tactics against them to permanently alter the political culture of Mexico's colonial population. This is to say nothing of the 1000 Latin language poems William composed before his death at an Auto de Fe or act of faith in which he was one of the dozens of heretics ordered to be publically burned on November 19th, 1659.We have several bonus episodes scheduled for the break between season 2 and season 3.
