Year 3 The Week Ahead - Week 2

from Year 3 Weekly News - Matthew Flinders 2026

We have had a fantastic start to the year in Year 3. All three teachers have been extremely impressed with the students’ eagerness to jump in, give things a go and show resilience in their learning. Students are doing a great job learning Year 3 routines and have already made some wonderful connections with their classmates.Class Reps: We are currently seeking Parent Representatives for each Year 3 class. Each class requires one or two parent reps to help support communication and community throughout the year. If you are happy to take on this role, please email your child’s classroom teacher.SSC: Student Staff Council (SSC) is a group of Year 3 leaders who work alongside staff to create fundraising initiatives that support our wider community, as well as lead and support Year 3 and the Junior Primary school. SSC representatives will have opportunities to speak in front of groups, lead fundraising initiatives and provide support to younger students. Students who are keen to nominate must prepare a short speech (approximately 1 minute) outlining who they are, the skills they would bring to the SSC group, and why they would be an excellent leader. Please note that speeches should not include big promises or props (e.g. signs or lollies). Speeches will be presented next Friday during lessons 6 and 7. Semester 1 SSC representatives will be announced in Week 3, and parents will be advised if their child is successful. If your child is unsuccessful in Semester 1 they can try again in Semester 2. Repairs: Please note there will be upcoming construction work outside of 3M due to a burst pipe. Repairs will take place on Thursday next week before school, and fencing will be erected on Wednesday to keep students safe. During this time, please use an alternative route to access the classroom—either via the Year 2 area or around the back from the tuckshop to access the 3M bag rack. Thank you for your understanding.Independent practice (Homework): Independent practice will begin in week 3. Homework is designed to support and reinforce skills taught in class. It is revision only, and no new learning will be introduced for homework. Each week, students are required to:Read their AR (Accelerated Reader) book nightly and record in their diaryComplete three XtraMaths sessions, with each session completed on three separate nightsComplete the English and Maths Independent Practice sheetsHomework should be completed daily across the week, rather than all on the same night. This helps students develop consistent routines and reinforces learning over time.Home learning will be sent home on Monday and is to be returned on Friday, where it will be checked and marked.Carefully, read the flyer that will be sent home in Week 2 for XtraMaths and ensure you use the same parent email you have used previously (new families will need to create a new account following the instructions). It is essential to follow the instructions carefully to ensure your child is in their new class group. Your child will complete their XtraMaths on a home personal device. Toys: Please ensure that students do not bring toys from home to school, unless it is a fidget that has been discussed and approved by your child’s classroom teacher. Toys such as Lego, soft toys, and similar items should stay at home to avoid distractions or the risk of them being lost during the school day. Students have access to Lego and other equipment during playtimes in the Wonderarium, so they will still have opportunities to enjoy these activities. Thank you for your support in helping us keep learning time focused and safe.Important Dates:5th Feb - Sibling photos in the Chapel 7:15 - 8:30am 11th Feb - JP Parent Information Evening 5.30 - 7.00pm19th Feb - New student morning tea19th Feb - Year 3 Assembly 2.10pm20th Feb - Year 3 Learning In Action 2:10pm 11-13th Mar - NAPLAN testing16-18th Mar - Parent Teacher interviews30th Mar - Cross Country2nd April - Last day of Term 1 for studentsLearning Intentions: We are learning to Literacy - Identify the structure of a narrative- read with fluency, accuracy and expression- locate and use evidence from the text to answer questions accurately.Numeracy - Interpret a 5-digit number in terms of ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens and ones- Read and write a 5-digit number and the corresponding number word- Identifying the value of each digit in a 5-digit number.Impact - Identify the features of living and non-living things.Wellbeing- Understand how there are lots of ways to help us become mentally fit
