Long running, citizen science data collection projects like the Audubon Society's Christmas Bird Count and the North American Breeding Bird Survey are more than just a fun excuse to get out and bird with other people! In fact, together they provide 60 years of comprehensive data tracking relative bird abundance in North America (and the CBC alone provides almost 120 years of winter bird data!). We're ringing in the new year with a discussion about how a festive and fun winter birding event like the CBC can actually help predict the future distribution of an invasive species just making its way into North America-- the Eurasian Collared Dove. Check out the article here: "Range Expansion and Population Dynamics of an Invasive Species: The Eurasian Collared-Dove" (Scheidt & Hurlbert, 2014).

Face to Face Face to Face A father and son talk about the motivation behind their fledgling podcast, what to expect in future episodes, talk a little bit about Feminism and recommend a song we love. You’ll even hear some background voices at around 19 minutes because we’re that professional! Sunda Cloud In the new Cold War battlefield of Indonesia, two old comrades conspire to topple the fledgling democracy. The weapons of this war are not nuclear missiles, but a far more deadly weapon. Money. But without the help of capitalist Anton Zelman their plot will fail. Anton's help comes at a price. But who will pay? I am magpie Bronwyn Eather A fictional character, set in history. A woman, fascinated by the language of this land, yet caught in her dreams. We meet Eliza Collins in the fledgling colony of Sydney in the Spring of 1789. I am Bronwyn Eather, a writer, musician and linguist. I want to share this imagined journey with you through lyrical verse and music. In an age of new ideas, what does enlightenment look like here on the land of the Yura, on the other side of time?Cover graphic by Mark Fairhurst | https://www.facebook.com/mark.fairhurst.127 Prowling About Panama by George A. Miller (1868 - 1961) LibriVox In 1903, Panama became a brand new state in Central America by seceding from Colombia in order to facilitate the construction of the Panama Canal, which was finished in 1914. This fledgling nation was home to the oldest inhabited European settlement on the American continent, a rich indigenous culture, and a splendid natural beauty from coast to jungle. Such was the scene as found by George A. Miller as he was "Prowling about Panama" in 1919, an activity that is more a "getting lost in the right way" than systematic exploration. Follow the author on his prowls through an amazing country that at the time of writing was an exciting mixture of tradition and modernity. (Summary by Ava).
