Yuma Installs Safe Haven Baby Boxes | Tucson News
from Tucson News Today | 2 Min Now | The Daily News Now!
Yuma, Arizona, just rolled out two new Safe Haven Baby Boxes at fire stations — secure, temperature-controlled bassinets where parents can anonymously surrender newborns in crisis. Inspired by a heartbreaking summer tragedy involving a baby found dead outside a hotel, this initiative offers a legal, safe alternative to desperate choices. When a baby is placed in a box, fire crews are instantly alerted and respond to ensure immediate care and eventual placement in a loving home. Founded by Monica Kelsey, who was abandoned at birth, the program now operates in 26 states. In Arizona, the law allows surrender up to 30 days old — and these two new boxes, one on each side of town, aim to give babies and families a second chance.
