Zimbabwe farmers call for south african farmers to share the land
from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa
The Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union is advising white South African farmers to agree to a deal to share land with the black majority. He says this should be done to avoid suffering the same fate as their Zimbabwean counterparts. You’ll recall white Zimbawean farmers were violently evicted from their properties as a result of the controversial land reform program in that country. The union's President, Peter Steyl, says it would be better if white South African farmers gave away a little bit of their land now, than risk losing everything later. Land redistribution is a burning political issue in South Africa and has divided the ruling African National Congress - ahead of a December conference where President Jacob Zuma's successor as party leader will be chosen. To discuss this emotive issue, we are joined on the line by:Prof. Andries du Toit: Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies Director:Theo de Jagger: President of World Farmers Organisation Willem van Jaarsveld: A Farmer, Agri Economist and CEO Agri LimpopoVuyo Mahlati – President of The African farmers' association of South Africa
