051E Look Beneath the Surface
The Tang dynasty was a time of glory, literature, and elegance, but especially in the later half, it was not a good time for the bulk of the population. The Emperor Hsüan / Xuan stayed in power too long, trusted horrible people, and countenanced An Lushan (Kang Roxan)’s revolt, leading to enormous suffering. In the 770s, a commander named Wang Kuoliang/Guoliang was put in such a position by his superior, Hsin Chingkao / Xin Jinggao that he saw no choice but to revolt. The Emperor asked Kuan Po / Guan Bo for advice, but the King Kao of Ts’ao (Gao of Cao) solved the problem without bloodshed.19 minutesLeave a comment and share your thoughts: https://open.firstory.me/user/cm98dlbl2057101tm59mdezmd/comments Powered by Firstory Hosting

Leave a comment and share your thoughts: Powered by Firstory Hosting

041E Thrashing the Emperor’s Buddy
Leave a comment and share your thoughts: A great difference between China and Europe is that bloodline has never been very important in China. What matters is what sort of person you are, what kind of ability you have, and how well you can do. This goes back to the very beginnings of Chinese memory, and is exemplified by the illegitimate son of a minor noble, Confucius. In his day, Confucius worked to remove power from the powerful by opening the government to all capable talent. Today’s story takes place in 444 ce, in the Northern Wei. The Northern Wei was founded by the the Sibers (Hsienpei / Xianbei), a people who had moved south from Siberia. They learned from Chinese culture, and established institutions and laws that laid a foundation for the later glory of the Tang dynasty. With its scope of millennia, Chinese history enables us to see broad trends that develop over centuries. Today’s story takes us back to around 408 bce, about 24 centuries ago, when the ruler Wen of Wei sent Yue Yang to conquer a rival power, Chungshan / Zhongshan.
