So you just got fired. Advice from author Beth Solomon

Beth Solomon’s claim to fame, she told me earlier today, is getting fired from more jobs than anyone she knows. So she knows a bit about getting up, restarting and cranking away. (I, like many other Substackers, empathize with this and have even turned it into a strategic career decision.) Solomon started out as a journalist working with ABC News and Voice of America, then as a former speechwriter for former Sen. Sam Nunn, and later a host of C-Suite jobs — which she talks about with much levity and wisdom. You can pick up her book here or your favorite local bookstore, it’s got a blend of some very amusing anecdotes (in hindsight) and practical advice on how to build a network for yourself, setting out on your own and putting on your gameface after receiving an HR-sterilized punch to the gut.** Programming note: No 4p ET livestream today, doing some emergency HVAC work here at the house with some remote help from 24sight family member Sean Boston. In case you missed it yesterday, here was my absolute laugh romp with The Julie Mason on SiriusXM Channel 124. Friends, support me with a paid subscription. It’s $5/month, $50/year. Your support keeps the lights on here, my family fed and even the heat on. It also frees me to work the field to bring back good reporting, from the Capitol to the mean streets of Washington, D.C. and beyond. And paying subscribers can sign up for a one-on-one 30-minute Zoom call with me. (Email - [email protected] to schedule.)Some topics Solomon and I covered: * Navigating the jungle of workplaces and the cold realities of office and organizational politics* Why employers are so keen on new workers, and overlook dedicated employees — leading to high turnover* What are some options for workers who, having chosen careers in the Washington region for their stability, could now be facing the axe if the incoming president and his team follow through on their promises of mass layoffs.* Setting out on your own with the help of the internet* Handicapping votes in the U.S. Senate, as Cabinet nominees angle for big jobs, or are blocked This is a public episode. Profane insights into Trumplandia and The Realignment with Charlie Sykes (Ep. 3)

“Now I’m a conservative, and I remember we’re all rolling our eyes at Bernie Sanders, ‘The millionaires and the billionaires’. And it’s like, ‘f*** me.’ The billionaires have decided it’s not enough for us to be really, really wealthy and to have the biggest yacht. We actually want power.” That’s the great Charlie Sykes on the latest episode of The Ground Game Pod (get it here on the Substacks, on YouTube or wherever you listen to quality pods.)Sykes is a veteran conservative, radio legend and recently moderated a talk between Kamala Harris and Liz Cheney onstage in Wisconsin. If your political compass isn’t spinning you haven’t been paying attention. But even for the time of The Realignment, this has been momentous. And Charlie’s here to make sense of it all.Show notes* “That event Monday was pretty much dogs and cats lying down together”* The receding Republican vote in Milwaukee’s “WOW” counties* Are there shy Kamala Harris voters? * How the Democratic ground game in Wisconsin usurped the old power of the Priebus, Paul Ryan ground game the GOP used to have a decade ago* In 2016, Trump closed with message discipline and won. Eight years later, that discipline is gone* Should Gen. John Kelly go on TV for Harris?* How the neomonarchists moved from the fringes of conservative movement to the crown princes of The Swamp* Clinton avoided the Rust Belt in ‘16, Harris has swarmed itAnd for the real heads in the 24sight News community, catch this 24sight Pod with Charlie from a few months ago. "Like talking to the Irish about the Potato Famine" - Mike Madrid on the Latino shift to Trump (Ep. 2)

Mike Madrid knows Latino voters. The co-founder of The Lincoln Project, former political director of the California Republican Party and author most recently of The Latino Century explains the stakes in the closing days of the 2024 race and what Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are doing right and wrong in courting this pivotal (and soon to be dominant) group of Americans. If you’ve got a good guest who understands the dynamics shaping this race, email [email protected] - [email protected] make sure to subscribe on all your favorite podcast apps. You can find the YouTube here. Full list on our YouTube Page. Show notes:Why American latinos are slamming the door shut on new immigrantsWhy the 2012 GOP autopsy was wrong, historicall wrong“There’s very little evidence that shows Latinos becoming getting more conservative, there’s a lot of evidence showing them becoming more populist”“Latinos don’t believe he (Trump) is talking about them”“43% of latinos think we should be building a wall … The Overton Window on latinos has changed dramatically” “It’s kinda like talking to the Irish about the potato famine. Like let’s go over our import policy in Ireland. (3rd and 4th gen Latin-Americans) view it as so far back that they think they’re not talking about them, or, increasingly, they believe those people should be here illegally either.”“Back in the day, the Irish were not viewed as white, the Italians were not viewed as white … Generationally, we have melted in to the pot and moved on”“They’re voting like their non-college educated white counterparts on the construction sites”“That ethnic anchor is much weaker by the third generation”Madrid’s up at the 26’ mark. Launching soon: The Ground Game Podcast!

Hey friends, Patrick Pfingsten and I are teaming up to launch a new pod with a unique way of covering this very important race for the White House — from the ground up. Every race is decided from the ground up, and we’re skipping the horse race for intelligence from the smartest operators who understand everywhere from Erie, PA to Maricopa County. This is a podcast of sanity and intelligence in a world of politics littered with insanity and a fog of crazy. We’re bringing on the biggest players in politics in the key battleground states who share a grounding in reality and can help cut through the fog. Pfingsten is a veteran politico, author of the Illinoize on Substack and morning host on WMAY-FM in Springfield, Ill. I’m a longtime politics reporter, with stints at the AP, CNN, and more covering everything from statehouses to the White House and three presidential races. And, of course, author of the Mike Pence biography, “Piety & Power.” We built this after a number of good talks on a shared belief that voters in the middle and disaffected Republicans and Democrats have been pushed aside by clickbait madness. Time to come back, friends. Look for more next week!Subscribe here at 24sight.news, over at YouTube or on your favorite podcast app. For booking or questions, email - [email protected] or [email protected] This is a public episode. A Hurricane of misinformation

For our latest pod, Patrick Pfingsten and I went around the horn on the biggest topics at the moment in the race for the White House: * What to make of the misinformation online which is hampering relief efforts for Hurricane Helene and the anticipated destruction from Hurricane Milton?* Is Kamala Harris’s media blitz any good? * Is Harris properly distancing herself from Biden? * What to make of the heavy focus on Western PA from both campaigns? Hope you enjoy. If there’s something you see us missing in these pods, or would like more attention on, drop a note: [email protected] - [email protected] can find our previous episodes at www.24sight.news/podcast or on your favorite podcast app. And while you’re on there, please be sure to give us 5 stars and for all the YouTube viewers, like and subscribe. 'An exceptional level of stupid' - the stakes in the VP debate

Hey friends, sending out the latest joint video pod with myself and Patrick Pfingsten of The Illinoize — we break down the stakes (or lack thereof) in tonight’s big VP debate between Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance. A lot of potential upside here for Vance, given he’s walking in with historically low popularity and downside for Walz, who has been shielded from big media interviews throughout this abbreviated campaign. And make sure to swing by during the debate, we'll be hosting a livestream on the Substack App — what’s on your Midwest Nice bingo card? Patrick put $100 down on a hot dish promise from the stage. I’ll go ahead and put down $25 on Vance’s love of chicken curry. After the debate, be sure to tune in to LiveNow from Fox, where I’ll be recapping the night with Andrew Craft and then SiriusXM POTUS Channel 124 where I’ll be on with The Julie Mason. 24sight X Illinoize: Kamala Media Strategy

Hey friends, sending around our latest rundown of the race — focusing first on what the goal of the Harris media strategy should be (spoiler: we need more details and need more tough interviews.) We also talk about Tom’s latest reporting trip to PA, covering a Keep Our Republic panel in Harrisburg and election integrity and security. And toward the end we discuss, who else, Mike Pence. Because the VP debate is just six days out, and Pence keeps popping his head up. Enjoy! This is a public episode. 24sight x Illinoize - Toning Down the Crazy

Patrick Pfingsten, founder of The Illinoize and I broke down the aftermath of this second assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump in our latest video chat! In case you missed, you can catch our first one here: Show notes: How is this level of bonkers in national politics sustainable? Ryan Wesley Routh, who was even quoted in the New York Times, clearly seems to be off his rockerWhat is the purpose of continuing to lean into the debunked pet-eating rumors? What will it take to get the focus back on Vice President Kamala Harris — the de facto leader in the polls — and what she would do as president? How did the Secret Service fail on this? Again? How did someone with an AK-47 style rifle and scope even make it within a few hundred yards of a former president and Republican nominee — this two months after a gunman shot that same former president. Veteran analysis. The Gabe Fleisher Interview. (Ep. 23)

Friends, very excited to Gabe Fleisher of Wake up to Politics which is now on Substack, on for the 24sight Pod. The “veteran” reporter tag here is a bit ironic because Gabe is still young, he just graduated Georgetown, but he’s been covering the campaigns for more than a decade now! He’s a great beat reporter, I’ve bumped into him on the trail a bunch over the years, and has some great insights on the state of things. Enjoy!Show notes: The youngest veteran reporter on trail - Gabe Fleisher!Old enough to remember when politics was “normal”Is it really unprecedented? Digging into history for some perspective - e.g. LBJ dropping out and political violence like when then-Rep. Gabby Giffords was shotFirst thoughts on Tim Walz? Shapiro was the smarter pick at the outset because of the sheer importance of Pennsylvania on the Electoral MapShapiro was a cold cost-benefit calculation, but the qualitative energy for Democrats is important to keep rollingThe energy is strong among Democrats, but is it really Obama 2008 levels? “You don’t compare it to 2008, you compare it to what they just had - and what they just had was zero enthusiasm”Does Harris need to start doing interviews? Harris has previously launched with lots of excitement but then fizzledThe country already saw Trump vs. Biden and wasn’t really interested, now people are tuning back in again“You just literally needed new blood, that’s all it took”When Haley said that “the first party to get rid of their old white guy will win this election” Will Haley voters vote Harris and Walz? What of the demographic shifts with younger Blacks and Latinos that we saw earlier in the race?Issues that matter to younger voters? The economy is one. But, “I don’t think you can TikTok your way into creating core economic perceptions.”Kamala Harris is “one of the great turnaround stories of the election” Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson detourWhat’s next?  This is a public episode. Don't proposition on LinkedIn. The Julie Mason Interview. (Ep. 21)

This is a big one.I got Julie Mason on the 24sight Pod. It is exactly as wild and excellent as you’d expect from one of the grandmasters of the craft. In case you’re not a battle-hardened “pooligan” of the highest order, Julie hosts The Julie Mason show weekdays, 3p-6p ET on SiriusXM POTUS (Channel 124.) If you’re driving down the ocean, or heading on a vacation, highly recommend this listen, it’s about 75 minutes. It is a political reporter symphony of destruction (and enlightenment.) We’ve got Hulk Hogan, Henry Rollins and Pam Greer nods, jazz and Minor Threat, pantsuits and sharp suits and things that should never be done on LinkedIn.If you dig our work here at 24sight News, please support us with a paid subscription. These pods sound fun and breezy, but there’s a fair amount of work that goes into getting them that way. Ok, now, show notes: Hulkamania- Trump doesn’t like being challenged by Black women - Trump didn’t get the message that Rs are not attacking Harris on “DEI”- Maybe the assassination attempt is helping Trump politically in ways we can’t see — it gold-plated his image with his followers, he is martyred and he is risen- On Ivan Raiklin and is it a status thing to be on his hitlist - Brick Suit guy at the CNN Grill- There’s now a hitch in the Trump giddyup. Will Trump now listen to his highly professional campaign staff … or fire them? - Rs were high on their own supply a few weeks ago, is it the Dems now in that position? Too online- The rise of “Blue MAGA” online Dems lashing out at press  - Tom’s dial-tested “focus groups”  - It’s important to remember how few Americans are on social media … America watches the evening news, not Twitter- The primal rage economy of the right just doesn’t hit the “erogenous zone” of the left like a “sober discussion on social security”What’s happened to us? - “We’re talking about jazz, in a favorable way. Our younger selves would come back and kill, kill us dead”- Julie Mason is the last punk, on SiriusXM - Henry Rollins is a fan of Julie’s, he’s on the show all the time. And Julie grew up a fan of his … and he is exactly as cool as you hoped - On the new right’s return of kings, and Julie’s Irish-American reflexive loathing of monarchs - How Julie ended up on the radio … a wild Tim Farley anecdote … After 45 minutes of “tapdancing” on air, “I felt like I’d given birth to a watermelon” - What was Trump doing with his NABJ appearance? Trying to drive a wedge between Harris and Black supporters. “I think this was his gut level idea for trying to drive a wedge in there.”- What happened to RFK Jr? (His numbers, not the brainworm) Harris winning in the style department- Kamala as Pam Greer in Jackie Brown — with the perfect suit after the flight attendant. “They’re sharp, they’re stylish, they’re professional” - Where the rubber hits the road: Will Harris do interviews and press conferences? “We haven’t seen her off the cuff” - Harris used to have staff problems, but has inherited the Biden operation — is that Biden team more loyal to him than to her?- What should be Harris’s media strategy? Can they win back Sulzberger?Kamala Harris Veepstakes Lightning Round- Julie’s on the Shapiro train — and questions raised by The Daily Beast article on staffer sexual harassment allegations- Tim Walz? Too lefty- Never bought the Buttigieg play- Too thirsty? Wes Moore has reached this point of self-awareness … are we at the point of Peak Moore, akin to Ramaswamy rapping Eminem at the Iowa State Fair?- Where’s Deval Patrick? He’s a beekeper- Double down with Whitmer? “America’s not ready for the estrogen bath” Where can we find Julie? - At Bluesky - at Juliemason, bsky.social, it’s a chatroom with her listeners- But not Twitter, with the Nazis and the abuse. - Do you social on LinkedIn? - Julie got propositioned on LinkedIn. “That’s not what this is for! What are you doing?? No!” This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit www.24sight.news/subscribe

The war in Ukraine. Tim Mak Edition. (Ep. 20)

Friends, for episode 20 of the 24sight Pod we’ve got Tim Mak - founder of The Counteroffensive on Substack, a longtime reporter and author of the very excellent book about the NRA, “Misfire: Inside the downfall of the NRA”.Tim’s been on the ground in Ukraine since the war’s start (coming up on three years now!) He and his growing team of correspondents document the Ukrainians’ struggle with verve and tenacity. If you’re not a paid subscriber yet to 24sight News, please upgrade now to support our journalism. The growing 24sight community helps fund good, insightful journalism — the antidote to clickbait and digital toxicity. Show notes: (This pod was recorded 8/1/24.) - How Tim, a former U.S. Army combat medic, became a war correspondent - The chronic stress of Ukrainians living through Russia’s ongoing attacks, “the common thread among all Ukrainians has been they haven’t felt safe” - Why is Putin attacking Ukraine? “His strategic interest is to squeeze the life out of the prosperity and the future of Ukraine, whether it's through this war, whether it's through denying them a pathway towards NATO, denying them a pathway towards the EU, denying them allies, denying them economic resurgence after the cessation of hostilities”- The latest aid package from the U.S. could have done more to protect Ukraine’s energy supply and establish a Patriot air defense system had it been received earlier. But, “equipment and aid doesn’t win wars, people do.” - Talk now of a future counteroffensive from Ukraine. “Ukraine understands that, that this war is most likely to end with a some sort of negotiated settlement, and they want the upper hand on the battlefield, when the negotiations do ultimately come about.”- On Russia’s influence at the RNC in Milwaukee- Looking at the new presidential race and understanding coconut-pilled- Ukrainians are clear-eyed that Trump in office would threaten continued U.S. support of Ukraine- The realpolitik of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky meeting with Donald Trump at the former president’s Florida club. “He understands that if Trump is elected, he’s going to be in a really hard spot.”- Putin’s disinformation and information warfare strategy. “It's been to take the most extreme stance on one side, take the most extreme stance on the other side, and then make centrists or people who have moderate views feel like they're crazy and out in the in the dark alone, right. I suspect they'll do that here in Ukraine.”And a special favor to ask — if you haven’t already, please fill out this customer survey. Caste discrimination and the rise of Indian-American candidates. Richa Karmarkar Edition. (Ep. 19)

Indian-Americans have been steadily rising in politics and elected office for decades now, but 2024 may be viewed as the election they arrived as a national force — from former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and former pharmaceutical executive Vivek Ramaswamy duking it out for the Republican nomination to Vice President Kamala Harris en route to becoming the first Indian-American to secure a major party nomination. With that rise, I’ve noticed an increase in attacks from the left and the right on the Twitters regarding their Indian heritage — particular Trump MAGA influencers from the right, and progressive activists from the other side hitting both for being from Tamil Brahmin families. So I reached out to Richa Karmarkar of Religion News Service to parse it all out. Karmarkar covers Hinduism for RNS, which is a great resource for anyone unfamiliar with their work. She has written extensively on issues facing Indian-Americans, including, recently, Harris and Hinduism in the Caribbean and the rightward shift of Indian-Americans including Usha Vance.(Of note, after we recorded this interview, former president Donald Trump attacked Harris in an interview with the National Association of Black Journalists, saying that Harris wanted to be seen as Indian first then later as Black — which is inaccurate.) Show notes: For the layperson, what are castes? Why are online trolls attacking candidates like Ramaswamy and Harris for their families’ Brahmin heritage? For “TamBrahms” Tamil Brahmins, immigration to the U.S. can cause an uproar among other Indians who chastise them as having the means to immigrateFor Nikki Haley, whose family is Sikh, there is a separate history of castes and complications arising from thatAn attempt by California lawmakers to ban caste discrimination recently pushed the issue of historic caste tensions to the forefrontFor many Indians, coming to the U.S. included wanting to leave the caste system behindIndian-Americans are really having a moment in American politics, decades after the first big waves of immigration from IndiaHindu political and advocacy groups are starting to gain prominence on the national stage This is a public episode. The team with the energy. Reed Galen Edition. (Ep. 18)

President Joe Biden’s exit and Vice President Kamala Harris’s securing of the Democratic nomination have fundamentally reshaped the race for the White House. So who better to tell us what this all means than longtime operative Reed Galen Galen. He co-founded The Lincoln Project, has been in the trenches for years and is now the president of pro-democracy group Join the Union. Show notes: * Wild four weeks, don’t speculate what’s next because we may jinx ourselves* Should Biden stump for Harris as a surrogate, try to keep Black voters and blue-collar white voters in the fold?* The trick for America’s pro-democracy coalition will be capturing the coconut energy and turning it into resolve in these final months* Vivisections of the Republican convention last week in Milwaukee and the effect of the Trump campaign promising a changed man and Trump delivering … Trump* Harris’s veepstakes — who would fit best? The 24sight Pod - Episode 12 - Celinda Lake and Christine Matthews on why America is checked out of this election

Celinda Lake and Christine Matthews have their fingers on the pulse of America’s swing voters. The bipartisan pair — Lake works for Democrats, including President Joe Biden, and Matthews has long worked for Republicans, most recently Larry Hogan of Maryland — have been testing the mood of swing voters across the country for years. The pair specialize in that most vaunted of demographics, which Biden and former president Donald Trump, are vying to win over - suburban women. 24sight’s Tom LoBianco and Warren Rojas spoke with Lake and Matthews about the mood of the country and what they’re hearing from a very worn-out electorate.Show notes: Why voters don’t remember January 6th? Democrats and Republicans have very different definitions of freedomWomen have been increasingly insulating themselves and their families from the news, a protective measure in these crazy timesCan trace much of this polarized society, with staunchly different concepts of reality, to the former president of the United States introducing the term “fake news” into the country’s bloodstream“Double haters”, those who don’t want Biden or Trump, are a very diverse groupAnd we talked about why you shouldn’t shoot dogs. Lake, who grew up on a ranch in Montana, had some insights into why South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem may have thought that would work well in appealing to MAGA world. Matthews, a dog owner, noted that the extensive coverage probably doesn’t play well with suburban moms who like to buy raincoats for their doggies. Also don’t shoot dogs. America needs solid reporting now more than ever, and we need your help to deliver it. The 24sight Pod - Episode 10: "I Will Never Vote for Him Again"

Republicans Voters Against Trump, one of the top NeverTrump campaigns, helped President Joe Biden win the White House four years ago. And this cycle they’re pushing to again keep former president Donald Trump from returning to office. The group, led by veteran operative Sarah Longwell of The Bulwark fame, has been conducting focus groups of swing voters — people in critical battleground states including Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and elsewhere — looking to find key pivot points which will help either convince them to stick with Biden in 2024, or at least not vote for Trump. (RVAT, among many groups on the right and center-right, has argued that if Trump returns to power he will attempt to plunge the U.S. into a dictatorship — something the aggrieved former president and presumptive Republican nominee has indicated he may do himself.) 24sight’s Tom LoBianco spoke with RVAT political director Gunner Ramer and RVAT director of strategy John Conway about their latest findings. They’ve launched a $50 million ad campaign airing testimonials from former Trump voters who say they can’t support him anymore. Many of them cite the deadly Jan. 6, 2021, siege at the U.S. Capitol as the final straw. From a purely political standpoint, these are the voters Trump would have to win back to eat into Biden’s current edge in the race. The latest indication of trouble for Trump was former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley winning a close to 17% of the vote in Pennsylvania’s Republican primary last month — despite having dropped out of the race long ago. Biden’s campaign, meanwhile, has been ramping up its efforts to keep these voters in the fold for him. 24sight by Tom LoBianco, Pilar Belendez-DeSha, Warren Rojas is a reader-supported publication. The 24sight Pod - Episode 9: Adrian Carrasquillo on pop-up politicos and RFK Jr.'s cultural play to Latinos

The coveted Latino vote. The political class has been awash in speculation and analysis about how Latinos will vote this cycle, with the potential to decide whether incumbent President Joe Biden or former president Donald Trump win a second term. Veteran politics reporter Adrian Carrasquillo has built a career covering Latino attitudes and concerns over the past decade. He joined 24sight’s Warren Rojas and Tom LoBianco for the latest episode of the 24sight Pod. One of the latest twists, which Carrasquillo wrote about for Politico Magazine, is Democratic scion turned presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. peeling away Latino support from Biden in the battleground states of Arizona and Nevada. We hope you enjoy the show, and if you’re listening to this free and like the crucial reporting we do here at 24sight, please think about upgrading to a paid subscription: $5/month or $60/year. The 24sight Pod - Episode 8: 'If he's not an asset, he'll do until one gets here'

“Russia without Ukraine is a country, Russia with Ukraine is an empire,” Reed Galen, co-founder of The Lincoln Project and author of The Home Front said on the latest episode of the 24sight Pod, paraphrasing the late American diplomat Zbigniew Brzezienski. “It's got the Black Sea, it's got the wheat fields, it's got high-performing individuals. And so you know, Putin wants it back. He's an unreconstructed Soviet.”As Congress remains paralyzed by the debate over sending the next round of aid to Ukraine to fight back the Russian invasion, Russia has ramped up its efforts to sway the 2024 election — again, a repeat of its 2016 efforts. The head of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Mike Turner, a Republican stalwart who gets special access to classified intelligence rarely seen by other lawmakers made this astonishing comment on CNN, “We see, directly coming from Russia, attempts to mask communications that are anti-Ukraine and pro-Russia messages, some of which we even hear being uttered on the House floor.”A blockbuster report in The Washington Post published this week detailed exactly how Russia is running its latest coordinated attack on the U.S. election system, pushing and amplifying disinformation and propaganda even promoting some of the most powerful lawmakers in Congress, like Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida. And the leader of the Republican Party has been making the same assessments about the Russian invasion of Ukraine as Russian President Vladimir Putin, whether he understands what he’s saying or not, and repeating other Putin attacks on the U.S.“Is Trump an asset of Russia?” LoBianco asked Galen on the 24sight Pod. “If he’s not, he’s certainly playing the part,” Galen said. “As Tommy Lee Jones famously says in No Country for Old Men, ‘If he’s not an asset, he’ll do until one gets here.’” If you know anyone who’d be a great guest for the 24sight Pod, drop us a note: [email protected] And if you’re not already a paid subscriber, please consider upgrading your subscription – $5/month or $60/year helps keep us fed and out in the field reporting. And to all of our paying subscribers – a HUGE Thank You! The 24sight Pod - Episode 7: Mixing it up with Manriquez

The thing about Capitol Hill reporter Pablo Manriquez is he’s always got something to say. Whether he’s penning provocative political profiles for Vanity Fair, delving into policy fights for his “underdog” newsletter Capitol Press or immortalizing the pageantry of the State of the Union by live painting the event in Statuary Hall, this fearless reporter stays close to the action – particularly when congressional leaders or the White House intrude on his passion: immigration. With Congress returning from recess to a whole mess of unresolved issues – and Republicans already at each other’s throats again – the 24sight Pod checked in with Manriquez about the good, the bad and the ugly of the wildly dysfunctional legislative branch. We don’t want to give away all the OMG moments, but here’s a cheat sheet for when to perk up your ears: * A brief history of The Devil’s Cellar* Debate: Is a PoliSci degree worth it?* WTF is ICE? Episode 6: Drudge: ‘He was keeping an eye on us’

Few people in media have had as powerful or as consistent an impact in shaping the national discussion around politics as Matt Drudge, the longtime editor of the Drudge Report and famous recluse. A quarter century ago, he stormed the national scene breaking the news of then-president Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky, he became the country’s “assignment editor” driving the news with his lo-fi site, and then he vanished. For our sixth episode of the 24sight Pod, National politics reporter Tom LoBianco spoke with longtime journalist Chris Moody who set out to quite literally find Drudge and try to answer the question of why he disappeared and what made him sour on then-President Donald Trump and more. Moody’s podcast, “Finding Matt Drudge”, just finished an eight-episode run, distributed through iHeart Media – when you’re not listening to the 24sight pod, we highly recommend Moody’s examination of Drudge. The series starts with Drudge’s combative relationship with longtime media giants – at once revering old school newsmen paying homage wearing a fedora, while also resenting the pedigreed journalists of the Washington Post, New York Times. Then carries through Drudge’s rise, as he smashed though gates and rose to power, often lording over those same institutions which used to dismiss him with his power to drive web traffic. Moody also discussed Drudge’s role in helping Trump win the Republican nomination and later breaking with him, as so many have over the years. “He was already against Trump before January 6, but I think he just got tired of him, just didn't think Trump was worth the squeeze – what you had to put up with to get the policy outcomes,” Moody said. “That's the big debate on the right anyway, ‘Is the juice worth the squeeze with Trump?’ And I think Drudge for either his own personal, policy, or professional reasons, decided, ‘No.’”And Moody hints at the big reveal at the end of the “Finding Matt Drudge” pod – Drudge was keeping tabs on him the whole time. “Whenever I would write something. I'm a journalist, I write a lot for The Washington Post and other places, he'd link to my stories,” Moody said. “We did an interview with Megyn Kelly and he linked to our interview in the show. And so he was listening, he was keeping an eye on us.”If you know anyone who’d be a great guest for the 24sight Pod, drop us a note! "I Think This Is a Deeper Attack on the Legitimacy of the System"

Hi friends, in light of former president Donald Trump again attacking the daughter of Judge Merchan, who is presiding over the “hush money” case set to go to trial on April 15, we’re re-upping this excellent discussion with Just Security journalism fellow Adam Klasfeld — paywall removed!Klasfeld detailed at length the strategy from Trump and his legal team of delaying proceedings, and turning attention away from his criminal charges and civil trial allegations, by repeatedly attacking the members of the judiciary, staff, and, in this latest instance, the judge’s daughter. “It benefits Trump to talk about alleged silencing rather than 34 alleged felony violations related to the cover up of hush money payments designed, according to prosecutors, to keep voters in the dark before the 2016 election as a number of scandals were breaking all at once,” Klasfeld said on the 24sight Pod. “It's a useful distraction. I think that again, I think Trump and his perhaps his attorneys are very closely reviewing what he can and cannot say are looking at that line,” Klasfeld said. “If they can make the conversation about his alleged silencing, I think Trump considers that a win.”“To his ferocity now, in going after not only the judge, not only the DA, but now the judge’s daughter, we're getting into family members. And that's where I would say that it shows that, among other signs, that he is actually taking this case seriously.”Reminder, if you like what we’re doing here at 24sight, and find this information valuable, please think about buying a paid subscription - $5/month, $60/year. Your support keeps us in the field, bringing back important voices like Klasfeld’s to illuminate what’s happening in the most important stories. Original post: For the fifth episode of the 24sight Pod, national politics reporter Tom LoBianco and Washington correspondent Warren Rojas spoke with Adam Klasfeld, journalism fellow with Just Security, covering the multiple cases involving former president Donald Trump. Klasfeld is a legal expert with a knack for explaining how complicated legal maneuvers tell the story of one of the most astounding moments in American history: a former president in court facing charges of fraud, defamation & criminal malfeasance.  Among the many sage insights from Klasfeld when it comes to reading Trump court documents: “Always read the footnotes.” The preview of this podcast is free for all 24sight subscribers. Episode 4: 'Anybody who tells you they have the solution to this is lying'

Pat Dennis has made a career out of unearthing stunning comments that the most powerful pols in the country would rather be kept private, and helped shape White House contests routinely with the lead Democratic opposition research group American Bridge. Dennis came up in the trenches, now he’s leading American Bridge’s efforts to keep President Joe Biden in the White House, and former president Donald Trump out.But in a political world in which crazy’s the new normal, and there’s plenty of it, how do you move the needle on a candidate? “Anybody who tells you they have the solution to this is lying,” Dennis told 24sight national political reporter Tom LoBianco for episode 4 of the 24sight Pod. That may sound surprising coming from a group with plans to spend $200 million through November, but is emblematic of the moment we’re in. (This interview was conducted Thursday, March 14, two days before Trump stirred up a “bloodbath” of a news cycle akin to his 2016 routine. So add that to the “banality of chaos”.) So if shocking doesn’t work anymore, what does? Voter testimonials, for one — which the group has put $140 million behind. That and … the candidates themselves.“I run a super PAC and you'd think I would be here saying, super PACs are incredible,” Dennis said. “You need to fund them to the tune of billions of dollars and they can do everything and work. Super PACs can do a lot. The mistake people make is thinking a super PAC is a replacement for a candidate — and they're not.” The first 20 minutes of the show are accessible to all subscribers free of charge. But… exclusive insights from Dennis, including analysis on which primaries pose risks for Trump and why he's vulnerable in North Carolina, are available only in the second half of the interview, which is for paying subscribers only.(Thank you! You keep us clothed and fed and we bring back the goods.) For our free subscribers, please consider upgrading to a paid subscription - $5/month or $60 year. The 24sight Pod - Episode 3: The state of this Union

Hello, friends, welcome to Episode 3 of the 24sight Pod. Tom LoBianco had a great, illuminating chat with two of the most clear-eyed observers of this moment in American politics: Bill Scher, politics editor at Washington Monthly, and Matt Lewis, Daily Beast columnist, longtime observer of the American right and author of “Filthy Rich Politicians”.The first part of our latest 24sight podcast is free to all, but the show, in its entirety (and there’s a good bit of sharp observations throughout) is available only to paying subscribers.President Joe Biden likely got his “reset” Thursday night with the State of the Union Address. “I do think this has great potential to reset and reframe the race,” Scher said. We also dug deep on where exactly all that energy came from (and the political implications of constantly playing down Biden’s energy and capability.) “I think Biden demonstrated that whether it was the caffeine or something stronger, or just the fact that you're in a room with people applauding you and getting you hyped up whatever it was Biden looked about 10 years younger, last night,” Lewis said. “You’re saying he didn’t need any of those Dr. Ronny Jackson go-go pills they used to hand out?” LoBianco said. The 24sight Pod - Episode 1: The Rise and Fall of CPAC

Hello, friends, and welcome to the first episode of the 24sight podcast! We’re very excited for this and have a very revealing episode for our launch, peering behind the curtain of CPAC, which for decades was the biggest and most important conservative political conference in the country but has lost ground as former President Donald Trump took over the Republican Party and swamped the conservative movement. 24sight’s Tom LoBianco spoke with former CPAC communications director Ian Walters and The Independent White House correspondent Andrew Feinberg. We recorded this Thursday live from the hotel bar at CPAC (halfway through the taping an attendee unfurled a banner of Trump’s mugshot, garnering some wows from the few dozen people gathered there.) The bar scene has often been referred to as the equivalent of the Star Wars cantina, with an ecclectic mix of politics super fans — but even that has died down in recent years. Is this a marker of the energy for Trump and the Republicans heading into the general election? For the launch of our podcast, we’re making this free to all subscribers. However future episodes will be released to paying subscribers first and then released broadly to free subscribers a few days later. Your support pays to keep us and our families fed and allows us to do things like pay for car repairs to make it big political conferences so we can come back with critical news and intelligence about the shape of the race for the White House. You can also find our reporting on the lawsuit regarding sexual assault allegations against CPAC Chairman Matt Schlapp (he and his team have roundly denied any wrongdoing) here. Thanks, and enjoy!Pilar and Tom Chapters:-CPAC 2024 is “vibeless” - on empty halls and a low energy confab-CPAC was created to bring Ronald Regan to a national audience … Young conservatives used to come to CPAC to hook up and party?
