On July 6, 2019, Chance Englebert went missing. He was last seen on surveillance video, confirming Chance walked north on 10th Street and then cut west through Terrytown. His cell phone last pinged near a tower by Western Travel Terminal, and an incoherent text message was the last anybody had seen or heard from him.

Ruth Marie Terry (September 8, 1936 – c. July 1974), also known as Lady of the Dunes, was a formerly unidentified murder victim found on July 26, 1974, in the Race Point Dunes in Provincetown, Massachusetts, United States. Her body was exhumed in 1980, 2000, and 2013[5] in efforts to identify her.  On October 31, 2022, the FBI field office in Boston announced that Terry had been officially identified.  As of August 28, 2023 her husband Guy Muldavin has been officially named as Terry's killer.

On February 14, 2017, the bodies of Abigail Williams (June 23, 2003 – February 13, 2017) and Liberty German(December 27, 2002 – February 13, 2017) were discovered near the Monon High Bridge Trail, part of the Delphi Historic Trails in Delphi, Indiana, U.S., after the girls had disappeared from that trail the previous day. The murders have received extensive media coverage, including reports that video and audio recordings of an individual believed to be their killer were found on German's smartphone.[2][3][4]On October 26, 2022, a suspect was taken into custody,[5] and, on October 31, that suspect was charged with two counts of murder.[6] Time described the arrest as "the first major break in a case that has captivated national attention for nearly six years."[7]

The Texas town of Waco has, for many Americans, become synonymous with tragedy—ever since the 51-day Waco siege in 1993 between the federal government and an extremist religious sect called the Branch Davidians ended in a deadly fire.The group, led by controversial self-proclaimed prophet David Koresh, was an offshoot of another group called Shepherd’s Rod, which was connected to the Seventh-day Adventists.On February 28, 1993, in response to reports that the Davidians had been stockpiling illegal weapons at their compound, the Mount Carmel Center, in preparation for the end of the world, Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents raided the property. Their goal: to search the premises and arrest Koresh for unlawful weapons possession. But the plan went south fast, with four federal agents and six Branch Davidians dying in a chaotic shootout. It’s still not clear who fired the first shot.

The Oklahoma Girl Scout murders took place on the morning of June 13, 1977, at Camp Scott in Mayes County, Oklahoma, United States. The victims were three Girl Scouts, between the ages of 8 and 10, who were raped and murdered. Their bodies were then left on a trail leading to the campsite's showers, about 150 yards (140 meters) from their tent. The case was classified as solved when Gene Leroy Hart, a local jail escapee with a history of violence, and rape, was arrested. However, Hart was acquitted in March 1979 after a jury unanimously returned a verdict of not guilty.[1]In 2022, it was announced that DNA testing in the case, although officially inconclusive, strongly suggests Hart’s involvement in the crime.[2] The case remains officially unsolved.Less than two months before the murders, during an on-site training session, a counselor at Camp Scott discovered that her belongings had been ransacked and her doughnuts had been stolen. Inside the empty doughnut box was a hand-written note, stating in capital letters, "We are on a mission to kill three girls in tent one."
