by Sarah Edmondson & Anthony “Nippy” Ames
Think you might be in a cult? Want to know the signs? Join Sarah Edmondson and Anthony “Nippy” Ames to talk about things that are..a little bit culty. Or in their case: a whole bunch of culty. As whistleblowers documented in the critically-acclaimed HBO series “The Vow,” Sarah and Nippy have a lot to say about their experience, and burning questions to ask people with similar stories. They’re here to help people understand, heal from, and avoid abusive situations one little red flag at a time. Listen in as they share their stories, have frank and unscripted conversations with other survivors and cult experts, and do a deep dive on how devotion can turn to dysfunction.

A Little Bit Culty x WTF is on my Mind?! - Kicked Out of Our Own Book Launch (Part 2)
We’re back with Mark Vicente for Part 2 of this joint A Little Bit Culty and WTF is on my Mind?! episode. This one gets into the real meat of what happened at our book launch event gone sideways—and what it means beyond just us.We play the last 12 minutes of Sarah’s recording from the event, then the bookstore owner's public social media post about the incident. We contrast it with what actually happened, including eyewitness accounts from people in the front row who tried to set the record straight, only to have their comments deleted. We talk about what it feels like to be publicly misrepresented with no ability to correct the record, how cancel culture weaponizes the cloak of altruism, and why the best fight is the one you don't fight. We also get into identity politics, why fusing your sense of self to a belief system makes civil discourse impossible, and why Mark thinks we're all being triangulated against each other on a macro scale. This episode is a case study in culty thinking without a cult—and a reminder that dehumanizing the person in front of you while claiming to fight for humanity is not advocacy; it's the problem. If the comments on this one devolve into a debate about geopolitics rather than the patterns at play, you've already missed the point.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of public shaming, online harassment, and geopolitical conflict. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. A Little Bit Culty x WTF is on my Mind?! - Kicked Out of Our Own Book Launch (Part 1)
In this special joint episode of A Little Bit Culty and Mark Vicente’s WTF Is on My Mind?!, Mark interviews us about the “Massy incident” during our Vancouver book tour for A Little Bit Culty: Navigating Cults, Control and Coercion. Together, we unpack what happened when a conversation about cult dynamics, extremism, and pattern recognition was hijacked by a highly charged political conflict—and how loaded questions, forced verdicts, black-and-white thinking, and moral purity tests can turn a book event into a full-blown ideological cage match. Stay tuned for Part 2 on Thursday.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, the Israel–Gaza conflict, genocide, extremism, religious and political polarization, and online harassment. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Corporate Vagina: Star Stone on OneTaste (Part 2)
In Part 2, Star gets into the red flags that finally became impossible to ignore at OneTaste: missing consent and accountability protocols, sexual boundary violations, spiritual bypassing, gaslighting, and an organization that seemed to have more “trust the process” than actual process. She shares how she slowly pulled away, eventually leaving the Bay Area, rebuilding her life, and finding her way back to herself through therapy, community, and the very thing she once avoided: feeling everything in her body.Star also talks about turning her experience into a solo theater show, complete with original songs about red flags, narcissism, orgasm, and—because apparently the universe demanded it—corporate vagina. We talk about the unregulated wellness industry, spiritualized intimacy, predatory influencers, and the tools every sexual or spiritual seeker needs: ask questions, check credentials, find out what happens when someone says no, and remember that “no” is a complete sentence. We’ll also share a few minutes of Star’s show at the end, so prepare for trauma, time, and comedy to make one very entertaining baby.Follow Star at starstonespeaks.com, on Instagram @starstonespeaks, and The Wild Project: thewildproject.orgStar performs Cl*t Cult September 10 and 11 at 10:30pm at Under St Marks Theater in NYC: https://tickets.frigid.nyc/event/6897:1495Also check her out at Brooklyn Comedy Collective on October 4 at 7pm.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of sexual assault, rape, sexualized practices, nudity, orgasmic meditation, coercive control, gaslighting, spiritual bypassing, sexual boundary violations, financial exploitation, communal living, and trauma recovery. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Corporate Vagina: Star Stone on OneTaste (Part 1)
In Part 1 of our third deep dive on OneTaste, Star Stone joins us to explain how a spiritual seeker looking for female empowerment and connection ended up inside a world of confusing intro events, “corporate vagina” demos, goalless orgasmic meditation, and communal housing that sounded like a nightmare waiting to happen. Star walks us through the slow creep from curiosity to commitment: Meetup mixers that felt like team-building exercises, increasingly intimate “communication games,” and a coaching program that promised transformation but delivered a grab-bag of incoherent teachings, hidden courses, and credit-card-friendly upsells.Along the way, we talk about loaded language, financial exploitation, blurred sexual boundaries, coercive control, and the very real moment when your yoga-trained brain goes, “Wait, this syllabus makes no sense,” and the culty fog starts to lift. It’s insightful, unsettling, and darkly funny—because sometimes the only way through is to name the absurdity, laugh until it hurts, and keep asking the questions they really don’t want you to ask. Stay tuned for Part 2 Thursday.Follow Star at starstonespeaks.com, on Instagram @starstonespeaks, and The Wild Project: thewildproject.orgStar performs Cl*t Cult September 10 and 11 at 10:30pm at Under St Marks Theater in NYC: https://tickets.frigid.nyc/event/6897:1495Also check her out at Brooklyn Comedy Collective on October 4 at 7pm.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of sexualized practices, nudity, orgasmic meditation, coercive control, financial exploitation, communal living, and sexual boundaries and assault. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Season 9 Opener: A Little Bit Culty Vancouver book launch & live Q&A (Part 2)
In Part 2 of our Vancouver book launch, we do a full-on audience Q&A, covering everything from cult susceptibility and the “cult-shaped hole in your heart” to how groups can start with good intentions and slowly slide into coercion, control, and abuse of power. We talk recognizing your own hooks, spotting personality changes and loaded language, rebuilding trust after leaving, and why “What to Do When It’s Time to GTFO” is a chapter in A Little Bit Culty: Navigating Cults, Control and Coercion—because sometimes you need a roadmap, not a motivational quote. We also answered questions about us meeting in NXIVM, leaving safely, the metaphorical shelf breaking, survivor shame, and the importance of sunlight, support, and keeping the conversation going.Special thanks to:Megan Williams at The Self-Publishing Agency for emceeingEric Lee at CoFunction Events & Workspaces for generously hosting us: cofunctioneventspaces.comJennifer-Lee Gunson for recording: podcastconsulting.caTrigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of cultic and sexual abuse, coercive control, indoctrination, trauma, family separation, death, suspected poisoning, cancer, suicide, and leaving high-control groups. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. We’re kicking off Season 9 live from our very special book launch conversation from July 2026 in Vancouver about our book, A Little Bit Culty: Navigating Cults, Control and Coercion. We chatted about the messy, hilarious, full-circle journey behind the book, then get into how to support someone who may be caught in a high-control group without pushing them further into isolation. Familias Horribles: Alicia Markowitz on No Contact and Finding Freedom from Family Abuse
Family is supposed to be your safe place—but what happens when home is the original high-control group? In this episode, Alicia Markowitz, co-host of the Spanish-language podcast Familias Horribles, joins us to talk about growing up in an abusive family system, becoming the scapegoat, and slowly realizing that the “family rules” were really just coercion, control, gaslighting, triangulation, and a whole lot of “because I said so.”Alicia gets refreshingly real about trauma, religious guilt, emotional and physical abuse, fawning, zero contact, and the terrifying business of choosing yourself after a lifetime of being told you’re the problem. We talk about how family cults mirror other high-control groups, how to recognize the red flags, why boundaries don’t magically work on narcissists, and how therapy, trusted people, good information, and a little hard-won self-compassion can help you rebuild the person you had to hide to survive.Follow Alicia on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok @estoydemilado, and Familias Horribles on YouTube and Instagram.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of childhood abuse, physical violence, psychological and emotional abuse, narcissistic and controlling parents, family estrangement and zero contact, gaslighting, scapegoating, panic attacks, depression, trauma, and suicidal fear. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Alicia Duncan on Coercion, Coverups & Canada's Medical Assistance in Dying Program (Part 2)
In Part 2 with Alicia Duncan, we get into the really juicy stuff: the loaded language, the euphemisms, and the whole “don’t say the scary word or everyone clutch their pearls” universe around MAID. Alicia breaks down how terms like autonomy, dignity, and assisted dying get used as PR glitter, while the actual lived experience can look a lot more like coercion, gaslighting, and a bureaucratic escape room with no exit. She also digs into the bigger system questions: who benefits, what safeguards are missing, why assessors aren’t held to a higher standard, and how financial and institutional incentives can shape decisions about life and death. Plus: the autopsy findings, the physiological effects of the drugs used, the push to expand MAID to people with mental illness and even mature minors, and why Alicia is on a mission to keep asking the annoying-but-necessary questions.Watch Alicia’s episode on CBC’s The Fifth Estate on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plinQAHZRvkAlso be sure to pick up Alicia’s book, The Other Side of the Straitjacket, when it drops September 1st, and follow her on X, Instagram, or at aliciaduncan.com. Alicia Duncan on Coercion, Coverups & Canada's Medical Assistance in Dying Program (Part 1)
This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. In this episode, we’re joined by Alicia Duncan for a conversation that takes ALBC somewhere new: not a traditional cult, but a deeply troubling story about coercion, undue influence, narrative control, and institutional power. Alicia shares what happened after her mother entered Canada’s MAID—Medical Assistance in Dying—program, and how a family already navigating COVID, concussion symptoms, mental-health struggles, caregiver burnout, and a seriously broken healthcare system ended up facing an unimaginable loss.Alicia walks us through the red flags, the rushed timeline, the medical assessments, the police wellness check, the legal maze, and the privacy laws that kept her family—and even the police—from accessing the records they needed to understand what happened. We get into assisted dying, euthanasia, suicide, autonomy, safeguards, medical negligence, bureaucratic gaslighting, and the very uncomfortable question of what happens when a system designed to protect people becomes more invested in protecting itself. And because apparently one impossible paperwork nightmare wasn’t enough, Alicia’s spent years advocating for answers, investigating the first police-investigated MAID death in Canadian history, and trying to make sure other families don’t get the same “good luck, hope you enjoy the maze” treatment. You’ll want to stay tuned for Part 2.Watch Alicia’s episode on CBC’s The Fifth Estate on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plinQAHZRvkAlso be sure to pick up Alicia’s book, The Other Side of the Straitjacket, when it drops September 1st, and follow her on X, Instagram, or at aliciaduncan.com.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of suicide, medically assisted death/euthanasia, PTSD, mental illness, concussion and traumatic brain injury, psychiatric hospitalization, coercion, medical trauma, family estrangement, caregiver burnout, institutional failure, and possible criminal negligence. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Where are they now? Gerette Buglion on Writing to Reckon (Part 2)
Gerette Buglion’s back for part two of our catch-up. This one dives deeper into the messy, important work of healing through writing, therapy, and self-trust. She talks about internal consent, knowing when to pause, and why it’s so important for survivors to move slowly when a story starts to light up the nervous system. We also get into the realities of publishing after cultic abuse, including how predatory dynamics in the writing world can hit old wounds hard, and why it’s crucial to know your allies and keep strong boundaries. Gerette shares how survivor experience can help you spot when something is genuinely off versus when an old trigger is getting activated. She reflects on the value of humor, love, and safe enough relationships in real healing. The episode wraps with more on Living Cult Free, including its discussion groups, symposiums, and survivor-centered podcast, plus a vivid dream exchange that lands on themes of predators, intuition, and self-reliance. In our next “Where are they now?” catch-up episode, Gerette Buglion is back, and she’s still doing what she does best: helping survivors turn cult experience into something meaningful, grounded, and actually useful. In this conversation with Sarah, she shares how life has evolved since we last spoke, from personal recovery and family life to the gentle, steady growth of Living Cult Free and her writing work with survivors.A big focus here is Writing to Reckon, her trauma-informed, cult-informed writing program for survivors who want to process coercive control through story. She talks about why writing can be so powerful, how to know when something is ready to share, and why slowing down before publishing can protect people from re-traumatization.She also offers practical advice for memoir writers and whistleblowers, including keeping old journals and materials which can become a goldmine later, writing privately and imperfectly, and trusting the raw language that comes up. It’s a strong reminder that survivor-led spaces can help rebuild trust, sharpen your bullshit detector, and make meaning out of what happened without flattening it. Stay tuned for Part 2 on Thursday.Follow Gerette on her website, gerettebuglion.com, or on Facebook or Instagram. Dr. Gillie Jenkinson on Thought Reform, Trauma, and Walking Free (Part 2)
In Part 2 of our conversation with Dr. Gillie Jenkinson, we move from her remarkable story into the practical question so many survivors ask: How do you actually recover after leaving a cult? Gillie shares how her own experience escaping a high-control Christian group led her to become one of the world's leading specialists in cult recovery, and why she set out to create ethical, trauma-informed support when almost none existed. We dig into the foundations of her work, from the International Cultic Studies Association (ICSA) and the pioneering Wellspring Retreat Center to the influence of Dr. Robert Jay Lifton's thought reform model, exploring why understanding coercive control is often the first step toward reclaiming yourself. We also unpack the common threads Gillie has seen after decades of working with former members of high-control groups, religious cults, and coercive relationships. From identity reconstruction and trauma recovery to the importance of healthy therapeutic boundaries and making sense of what happened, this convo’s packed with hope and hard-earned wisdom for anyone navigating life after undue influence.Pick up Dr. Gillie Jenkinson’s book, Walking Free from the Trauma of Coercive, Cultic and Spiritual Abuse, follow her on Facebook or LinkedIn, and follow Hope Valley Counselling at hopevalleycounselling.com or on Facebook.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of religious trauma, coercive control, thought reform, and psychological manipulation. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Dr. Gillie Jenkinson on Thought Reform, Trauma, and Walking Free (Part 1)
This episode is sponsored by Betterhelp.Dr. Gillie Jenkinson—the OG, the GOAT, and the GG of cult recovery work (she needed a definition, we provided several)—finally makes her long-overdue debut on A Little Bit Culty. She’s a therapist, cult survivor, and the author of Walking Free from the Trauma of Coercive, Cultic and Spiritual Abuse, and this first part is all about how she got in.It started in 1970s London: a posh English boarding school girl who grew up in Uganda, wanted to marry a lord, and had no particular ambition or sense of direction. A persistent friend with a sulking habit got her to a meeting, an emotional experience convinced her it was real, and suddenly she was a radicalized born-again Christian baptized in the Leicester Square fountain with a police officer conveniently looking the other way. From there it was a slow drift—au pair jobs, city moves, counseling from a fellowship—until she found herself living in community houses with the Love of God group, a Bible-based cult founded by a charismatic opera singer from Birmingham School of Music. What followed was seven years of escalating control, a second leader who brought in physical beatings with a bamboo cane framed as spiritual discipline, and a psychological prison so complete that leaving never once crossed her mind. The cult imploded on its own—and she got out with her future husband Tony, whom she'd been secretly carpooling with—but the cult stayed in her for another 14 years through a series of churches that knew, as she puts it, "fuck all" about cult recovery. Part 2 brings the work, the book, and the brilliance she's built from all of it—stay tuned.Pick up Dr. Gillie Jenkinson’s book, Walking Free from the Trauma of Coercive, Cultic and Spiritual Abuse, follow her on Facebook or LinkedIn, and follow Hope Valley Counselling at hopevalleycounselling.com or on Facebook.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of physical abuse, religious coercion, and psychological imprisonment. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. The Workout Witch: Liz Tenuto on Trauma, Somatics, and When the Body Speaks (Part 2)
In Part 2 of our conversation with Liz Tenuto aka The Workout Witch, we get into the science (and surprisingly practical magic) behind somatic healing and why so many trauma survivors feel stuck even after years of therapy. Liz shares how her own search for relief from chronic health issues led her to the world of nervous system regulation, and explains how simple somatic exercises can help move the body out of survival mode and into a place where real healing can begin. We also explore the connection between religious trauma, cult recovery, chronic stress, and physical symptoms, unpacking why unresolved trauma can show up as everything from jaw clenching and insomnia to chronic pain and autoimmune conditions.Along the way, we put Liz's work through the ALBC lens, asking what healing looks like after life in a high-control group—and how to tell the difference between evidence-based recovery tools and wellness trends that overpromise. If you've ever wondered why your body seems to remember things your mind has already processed, this conversation offers an accessible, hopeful look at trauma recovery that goes beyond talk therapy.Pick up a copy of Liz’s book, When the Body Speaks and follow her at theworkoutwitch.com or on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads or YouTube.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of trauma and religious trauma, PTSD, chronic illness and pain, anxiety, and the physical effects of living in prolonged survival mode. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. The Workout Witch: Liz Tenuto on Trauma, Somatics, and When the Body Speaks (Part 1)
Liz Tenuto, aka The Workout Witch, joins A Little Bit Culty for a seriously useful, beautifully weird conversation about healing after abuse, trauma, and all the body-based chaos that can follow. She shares how TikTok accidentally became her platform, how somatics helped her reclaim her body after an abusive marriage, and why movement ended up being the thing that finally made a dent in her insomnia and dissociation.Liz also talks about the early warning signs she missed, including love bombing, financial abuse and tech abuse, and the slow, mean little erosion of identity that kept her doubting herself for way too long. Her story is further shaped by childhood sexual abuse, a later assault at 14, and the way trauma can sit in the body until the right kind of healing starts opening the trapdoor. This episode is equal parts candid, smart, and deeply validating for anyone who has ever felt like their nervous system was running a little hot and a lot haunted. Stay tuned for Part 2 of our convo on Thursday.Pick up a copy of Liz’s book, When the Body Speaks and follow her at theworkoutwitch.com or on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads or YouTube.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of childhood sexual abuse, sexual assault, domestic and financial abuse, coercive control, dissociation, and trauma recovery. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Religious Trauma and Cults: Sam Sellers & Elise Heerde on Healing After High Control Churches (Part 2)
Sam Sellers and Elise Heerde return for Part 2 to unpack what healing actually looks like after leaving high-control religious environments. Spoiler: it is not neat, linear, or especially glamorous. Sam talks about getting married, being shunned, learning to live with religious trauma, and slowly rebuilding after years of dissociation. Elise shares how counseling helped her connect the dots between assault recovery, body-based trauma responses, and the God-image she had been handed.A big thread here is how these systems train people to distrust their own minds, especially through weaponized Bible passages, predestination logic, and the kind of “God said it, I believe it, end of discussion” authority that makes your inner compass feel illegal. Both guests also dig into the messy aftermath of deconstruction, including functional freeze, black-and-white thinking, and the way survivors can accidentally recreate some of the same dynamics they’re trying to escape. Our convo ends with a practical note of hope: Religious Trauma and Cults is expanding its work to support survivors and practitioners across Australia and New Zealand, with a focus on high-control groups of all kinds—not just religious ones.Follow Religious Trauma and Cults at religioustraumaandcults.com, Sam’s website and podcast at anchoredcounsellingservices.com.au and Elise’s website and books at eliseheerde.com.And to follow the Victorian Parliamentary inquiry into the recruitment and impact of cults and other fringe groups submission: https://religioustraumaandcults.com/victorian-cult-inquiry-submissionTrigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of religious trauma, coercive control, assault recovery, dissociation, queer identity, emotional and spiritual abuse, and family/community rejection. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Religious Trauma and Cults: Sam Sellers & Elise Heerde on Healing After High Control Churches (Part 1)
Sam Sellers and Elise Heerde of Religious Trauma and Cults bring the receipts on growing up in high-control faith worlds, with Sam from the Brethren Christian Church, an independent off-shoot of the Exclusive Brethren, and Elise from the Pentecostal Church & New Apostolic Reformation. They talk about how those systems can start out feeling like belonging with a side of certainty, then slowly turn into “wait, this is weird” when obedience, fear, and authority start doing the heavy lifting.Sam shares how a strict, male-led church, predestination, and a not-so-subtle pressure to comply eventually collided with her own growing sense that the whole thing was, frankly, spiritually and emotionally bonkers. Elise gets into hell trauma, hearing-from-God hierarchy, and the painful realization that being told not to trust yourself is a pretty solid recipe for losing the plot. It’s a funny, sharp, and deeply honest conversation about religious trauma, queer identity, control, and the long road back to your own brain. Michael Shamblin Black on The Way Down and Escaping Remnant (Part 2)
Michael Shamblin Black is back for Part 2, and this one goes to the darkest corners of life inside Remnant Fellowship—and the even darker corners of life after it. Michael walks us through the red flags he couldn't ignore: Gwen's suffocating control, the Remnant "guidance system" cataloging every member's doubts and mapping their homes (collateral, just without the branding), an arranged marriage designed to keep him monitored, Joe Lara's sniper threat with a Creedmoor round, and the moment the plane went down and he felt, honestly, relief. We talk about what it's like to be PIMO—physically in, mentally out—for years, secretly recording meetings and writing in a hidden journal while singing worship songs on stage. Then comes the aftermath: sleeping on an air mattress chasing rats with a machete, stress-induced chest pain, hair falling out in clumps, suicidal ideation, and a stalker with 15 arrests who'd been at it since 2010.Michael's still here, still fighting, and still hoping his kids find their window out. We end with his message to anyone still inside Remnant, the healing power of finally being able to say the things out loud, and the wild fact that Jennifer Grey—yes, Baby from Dirty Dancing—plays his mother in the Lifetime movie, Starving for Salvation. Reaction video incoming…Follow Michael Shamblin Black on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, X, or TikTok. Michael Shamblin Black on The Way Down and Escaping Remnant (Part 1)
Michael Shamblin Black joins ALBC to talk about growing up inside his mother Gwen Shamblin’s world, featured in the HBO Max docuseries The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin. He reflects on life in Remnant, his current efforts to expose the church, and how therapy with Dr. Laura Anderson (past S6 ALBC guest) has helped him gain clarity while he works through long-held trust issues. He shares a deeper look at Gwen’s early worldview, including how her anti-authority instincts, fixation on submission, and resentment toward male leadership shaped the messaging that later became Remnant Fellowship. That message shifted from weight loss and “personal revelation” into a church culture that emphasized control, appearance, loyalty, and separation from outside influence.Michael talks about how the church’s collapse accelerated once its public legitimacy cracked, how the plane crash and the docuseries further damaged the brand, and why he now sees Remnant as an appearance-driven system built on shame and power. He also describes his own path into music, the opportunities that vanished when the backlash began, and the painful realization that his family story, his career, and the church were all entangled. Corey Jentry on Selling Sanity: Inside the Troubled Teen Industry Cult (Part 2)
In Part 2 of our conversation with Corey Jentry, we pick up where we left off and follow the long, winding path out of the troubled teen industry and the program founded by Bob Meehan. Corey shares how years of coercive control, dependency, and identity-shaping didn’t simply end when he left the program; they followed him into the world of recovery, where he found himself grappling with many of the same dynamics inside certain corners of 12-step culture and the addiction-treatment industry. We talk about the dangers of pathologizing autonomy, the power of belonging, and why it can take decades to untangle beliefs that were imprinted during adolescence. Our conversation also explores Corey’s evolution from survivor to researcher and advocate. He reflects on discovering how the business of treatment really works, recognizing familiar patterns across the behavioral health, rehab, and youth treatment worlds, and why he’s dedicated so much of his work to understanding indoctrination, radicalization, and coercive influence. Thought-provoking, nuanced, and occasionally darkly funny, this episode is a masterclass in spotting the difference between genuine support and manufactured dependence.Pick up Corey’s book, Selling Sanity: The Troubled-Teen Industry, the Insane Profits, and the Kids Who Pay the Price, and follow him on his website, coreyjentry.com, Substack @drcoreyjentry, or on LinkedIn.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of psychological manipulation, coercive control, addiction treatment programs, suicide, overdose, mental health struggles, emotional abuse, and experiences within the troubled teen industry. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Corey Jentry on Selling Sanity: Inside the Troubled Teen Industry Cult (Part 1)
In Part 1 of our conversation with Dr. Corey Jentry, we dive into a side of the troubled teen industry that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough: the programs that didn’t need to kidnap kids in the middle of the night, because they convinced them to walk in willingly. Corey shares how, as a struggling teenager looking for connection, he was drawn into what would become a five-year stay inside the Insight Substance Abuse program, formerly Palmer Drug Abuse Program (PDAP), a highly controlling treatment program founded by Bob Meehan, the controversial architect behind a network of adolescent rehab programs that many former participants now describe as cult-like.What starts as a story about teen treatment quickly turns into a masterclass on love bombing, recruitment, and coercive influence. Corey walks us through the carefully crafted world of attractive young counselors, instant belonging, and promises of friendship that made the program feel like the answer to every teenage problem—until it wasn’t. We unpack the origins of Meehan’s treatment empire, the business model behind the industry, and how vulnerable families were sold a solution that often created far more harm than healing. Corey’s story is equal parts fascinating, infuriating, and eye-opening—and this is only the beginning. Stay tuned for Part 2 on Thursday.Pick up Corey’s book, Selling Sanity: The Troubled-Teen Industry, the Insane Profits, and the Kids Who Pay the Price, and follow him on his website, coreyjentry.com, Substack @drcoreyjentry, or on LinkedIn.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of psychological manipulation, coercive control, addiction treatment programs, family dysfunction, emotional abuse, and experiences within the troubled teen industry. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Bring Me the Beauties: Hoyt Richards, and a Double Life in Eternal Values (Part 2)
Hoyt Richards is back for Part 2 with the escape story nobody knew they needed: love, coercion, a shaved head, and the unlikely guardian angel who turned out to be Fabio. After Frederick's death, the new cult leader still made Hoyt's life hell. When Hoyt fell secretly in love with Donna over four years and dared to question the apocalypse timeline (spoiler: it didn't happen by 1999), he was forced to break up with her, shave his head to prevent modeling, and do slave labor while facing nightly verbal firing squads. He tried to escape three times before finally succeeding—and that's when he discovered who actually had his back.We talk about Fabio. Yes, that Fabio. How a Renaissance man electrical engineer in a romance novel cover became Hoyt's sanctuary when he showed up at his door a shadow of himself, giving him safety without questions. We discuss his reunion with his brother Rory (ten years of silence, then grace), reconnecting with Donna, and the painful realization that some people from the group are still devoted to Frederick—framing abuse as training.Hoyt shares his nuanced take on victim-blaming, using Allison Mack from NXIVM as an example of how we focus on the perpetrator she became rather than understanding how she was seduced and manipulated. He explains why the lens should be on the seductor, not the seduced, and his mission to make cult awareness accessible by framing it on the continuum of everyday power dynamics: coaches, bosses, lovers, and family members who make us give our power away. We wrap with Wellspring, creative arts as healing, and the shaman's wisdom about flipping the tortilla.Follow Hoyt Richards at hoytrichards.com and on Instagram @hoytrichardsofficial, and Bring Me the Beauties on Instagram @bringmethebeauties.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of emotional and psychological abuse, physical violence, coercive control, and cult dynamics. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Bring Me the Beauties: Hoyt Richards, and a Double Life in Eternal Values (Part 1)
This episode is sponsored by Betterhelp.Hoyt Richards joins the pod to talk about the double life behind his modeling fame and his nearly 20 years in Eternal Values, the high-control group also featured in HBO’s Bring Me the Beauties: A Model Cult. He reflects on how a seemingly glamorous world of fashion, access, and status got tangled up with grooming, identity loss, and a spiritual system that kept pulling him deeper in.Our conversation focuses on how recruitment worked: being flattered, singled out, made to feel special, and gradually separated from family, friends, and any outside perspective. Hoyt explains how Frederick von Mierers (Freddy) used charisma, mystique, and selective “truths” to make himself look enlightened while building a group that demanded loyalty, labor, and secrecy. We also talk about the psychological cost of staying, the “matrix” framing that made leaving feel spiritually dangerous, and why survivors often need both accountability and self-compassion in recovery. The real story is not just the cult leader, but the ripple effect on everyone dragged into the orbit, and why those warning signs can show up in cults, relationships, and other power dynamics. Where are they now? Mark Vicente on the Narcissist’s Playbook (Part 2)
In Part 2 of our “Where are they now” chat with Mark Vicente, he talks about Narcissist’s Playbook and the emotional toll of spending five years documenting narcissistic abuse and expanding that work through his Instaguru series and podcast. The project keeps revealing the same pattern at different scales, from cult dynamics and propaganda to politics, performance, and the way people get triangulated against each other. The conversation also gets more personal, with Mark and Sarah reflecting on their own susceptibility to fawning, pedestal-building, and overexcitement, plus the need to slow down, do reference checks, and trust their bodies when something feels off. Mark shares that one of his biggest lessons is not to worship people with charisma or clarity, because that’s often what lets abuse hide in plain sight. It also touches on the film’s release strategy, funding, outreach, and why he’d rather build an audience directly than hand control to a streamer.Watch the trailer for Narcissist’s Playbook and stay tuned for early access links and screenings near you: narcissistsplaybook.com/long-trailer-landing-pageFollow Mark at markvicente.com, on Patreon, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, X, or TikTok.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of narcissistic and sexual abuse, coercion, manipulation, cult dynamics, and trauma bonding. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Where are they now? Mark Vicente on the Narcissist’s Playbook (Part 1)
Mark Vicente returns for a new “Where are they now?” conversation and opens up about the five-year journey behind his upcoming film, Narcissist’s Playbook, which he describes as a way to better understand the psychology he once lived inside. We revisit how narcissistic patterns showed up in NXIVM and why they’re so hard to see clearly while you’re in it, and how the film tries to explain the mechanics of manipulation without pretending people can simply “love” abuse away. Our conversation also digs into the documentary’s most disturbing insights, including the way narcissists can mirror people back to themselves, target vulnerabilities, and create long-game strategies of control that are hard to recognize in real time. Mark talks about what he learned interviewing self-aware narcissists and why the film is meant to be a tool for survivors, clinicians, and students alike. We also revisit NXIVM’s bizarre intake questionnaires, Nancy Salzman’s role, Keith Raniere’s manipulation tactics, and the relief that comes from speaking openly once you’re out. She reframes narcissism away from labels and toward impact, helping listeners understand why these relationships can be so destabilizing and why recovery is absolutely possible. She also dug into the patterns that keep people stuck in narcissistic relationships, why self-blame is so common, and how healing starts with seeing the dynamic clearly instead of internalizing the damage. Dr. Christine Marie on Trust Me: The False Prophet and the Fight for Justice (Part 2)
In Part 2 with Dr. Christine Marie, we dive into Netflix’s Trust Me: The False Prophet and why the lack of victim-shaming in the response has been a dream come true. She walks us through the strategy (and frustration) of working with the FBI on the Sam Bateman investigation, why she needed footage of Sam committing obstruction of justice to get him arrested, and the devastating mistake of housing all the underage victims together in one group home where older girls could obstruct interviews. We discuss the heartbreak of watching Nomz and other victims serve prison time despite being coerced themselves, and Christine's proposal for a new kind of facility. We talk about Sam's ongoing manipulation from jail (he's going to trial next month just to psychologically torture the girls who turned against him), the $15,000 white leather jacket that should be a crime in itself, and why coercive control laws could change everything for FLDS survivors and beyond. Christine shares why public love and dignity after shame is the most healing thing that could ever happen, her work with Voices for Dignity, and her next mission: promoting empathy, fighting online cruelty, and making kindness cool again. Plus: Christine reads her journal entry about Keith Raniere and Sarah reads the Facebook message where she told him to “de-cult” himself—spoiler: he didn't listen.Definitely watch Trust Me on Netflix and visit the websites for Dr. Christine Marie and Voices for Dignity: ChristineMarie.com, VoicesForDignity.org. Dr. Christine Marie on Trust Me: The False Prophet and the Fight for Justice (Part 1)
Dr. Christine Marie joins us to talk about surviving manipulation, public shaming, and the long road to healing after her experience with a false prophet and the people around him, as documented in Trust Me: The False Prophet on Netflix. In Part 1 of our convo, she traces how her Mormon upbringing, business struggles, and search for meaning made her vulnerable to coercion, how NXIVM’s Keith Raniere first entered her life, and how she eventually began recognizing the pattern of abuse for what it was.She also shares how a docudrama distorted her story through Frankenbiting and public humiliation, and why that misrepresentation pushed her to go back to school and finish her PhD in media psychology. It’s a powerful conversation about victim shaming, cult recovery, media ethics, and turning painful experiences into something useful for others. Danny Rensch Returns: Stories Behind Dark Squares and Untold: Chess Mates (Part 2)
In Part 2, we continue our wide-ranging convo with Danny Rensch, which starts with a very pointed critique of Netflix editing and the way it framed both Sarma Melngailis and the Hans Niemann scandal in Untold: Chess Mates. He gets into the ethics of Chess.com’s cheating investigations, why nuance gets flattened in public narratives, and how hard it is to explain a private, evidence-based process to people who only see the headline version. We also moved into bigger questions about power, accountability, and self-doubt, including Danny’s reflections on running a huge platform, being called the “chess mafia,” and trying to build a system with real checks and balances. Finally, he covers why emotional timing matters, how transitions make people more vulnerable, and why taking a breath before reacting can matter just as much in life as it does in cult recovery.Be sure to watch Untold: Chess Mates on Netflix, read Danny’s memoir, Dark Squares: How Chess Saved My Life, and follow him on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, X, or LinkedIn.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of manipulation, coercion, public accusations, cheating allegations, power dynamics, and emotional abuse. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Danny Rensch Returns: Stories Behind Dark Squares and Untold: Chess Mates (Part 1)
Danny Rensch returns to A Little Bit Culty for a live conversation in Atlanta, where he was in town on the tour stop for his memoir, Dark Squares: How Chess Saved My Life. A fan favorite from our earlier Season 8 appearances, Danny reflects on the book, the life experiences that shaped it, and what it means to finally put language to trauma, manipulation, and survival. In Part 1, Danny opened up about the emotional core of his memoir and the idea that you can’t truly consent if you’re not being told the truth. He talks about how that idea helped him reframe deep self-blame around his own family story, why so many people struggle to name their experiences as abuse or coercion, and how much healing depends on giving yourself grace. We also touched on the Netflix documentary Untold: Chess Mates, which Danny discusses with mixed feelings, especially around editing, nuance, and how the story of the Hans Niemann scandal was framed. He explains what the documentary left out, how the chess world has responded to his memoir, and why he’s most focused on connecting with readers who actually engage with the book. Stay tuned for Part 2 of our conversation.Be sure to watch Untold: Chess Mates on Netflix, read Danny’s memoir, Dark Squares: How Chess Saved My Life, and follow him on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, X, or LinkedIn.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of coercion, family separation, cult dynamics, emotional abuse, gaslighting, manipulation, and psychological trauma. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Shattered, Broken, and Beautiful: Brooke Deanne on Jehovah’s Witnesses (Part 2)
In Part 2 of our conversation with Brooke Deanne, we get into the moment the whole thing finally cracked wide open: the knife incident that became her final straw, the divorce that followed, and the painfully familiar push-pull of leaving a trauma-bonded relationship. Brooke also shared how the Jehovah’s Witness elders protected the wrong person, why the system kept men in power, and how shunning can make you feel like you’ve been erased by your own people. We follow Brooke through the aftermath: PTSD, panic attacks, therapy that didn’t have the right language for religious trauma, and the very relatable “oops, I traded one cult for another” detour into New Age spirituality. Along the way, she talks about rebuilding trust in her body, learning to spot red flags, exploring somatic work and psychedelics, and finding safer, saner ways to heal—because apparently the nervous system did not sign up for any of this nonsense.Be sure to pick up Brooke’s book, Shattered, Broken, and Beautiful: Losing My Religion and Finding Faith, or follow her on her website, brookedeanne.com, or social media.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of cults, coercive control, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, shunning, trauma bonding, religious trauma, PTSD, panic attacks, and discussion of psychedelics. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Shattered, Broken, and Beautiful: Brooke Deanne on Jehovah’s Witnesses (Part 1)
In Part 1 with Brooke Deanne, we chat about her growing up as a third-generation Jehovah’s Witness, the deliciously bad idea of confusing control with “truth,” and what it’s like to be raised in a system where curiosity gets shut down before it can even put on shoes. Brooke walks us through the culty greatest hits: conditional love, shunning, hierarchy, weirdly intense rules about sex and marriage, and the kind of spiritual bookkeeping that makes you feel like you’re always one bad decision away from being sent to the cosmic timeout corner. We also cover Brooke’s marriage, the abuse she survived, and how religious training, family dynamics, and trauma can all pile on and make it harder to see what’s actually happening in real time. She brings a therapist’s eye to the whole mess, connecting the dots between attachment, gaslighting, trauma bonding, and the very human urge to keep trying to be the “good girl” even when the whole system is rigged. Where Are They Now? Isabella Constantino on Post-NXIVM Healing and Identity (Part 2)
In Part 2 of our Where Are They Now? series with Isabella Constantino, we spill more on NXIVM, Keith Raniere, and the long shadow of cult recovery. Since first sharing her story, Isabella has been doing the brave, messy, non-linear work of rebuilding: untangling identity, processing trauma, and figuring out who she is outside a high-control group that once shaped so much of her early adult life. We talk about healing after coercive control, the surprises of post-cult growth, what still lingers years later, and how freedom isn’t always one big movie-ending moment, but a thousand small choices. Isabella reminds us that leaving a cult is one chapter; learning to live afterward is the sequel.Follow Isabella on her website, isabellaconstantino.com, or on Facebook or Instagram @ic_artconstantly.Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Where Are They Now? Isabella Constantino on Post-NXIVM Healing and Identity (Part 1)
This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. In the first installment of our “Where Are They Now?” series, we catch up with Season 5 guest Isabella Constantino to find out what life looks like after NXIVM when the smoke clears and the cult fog machine finally runs out of juice. Isabella shares what she’s been up to lately, including working at an art museum in Buffalo, and talks honestly about the long, weird, non-linear business of healing—because recovery is not a quick weekend workshop with flip charts and matching outfits. We also revisited her time in Albany, where the pressure was high, the logic was loopy, and the vibe was of a productivity cult with a side of emotional whiplash. We touch on her working on her Tourette’s with Nancy Salzman and the gaslighty phone calls from Mark Elliott trying to sell the miracle cure. We chat information silos, the body keeping score, and why sometimes the biggest breakthrough is simply realizing, “Oh, right… that was bananas.” Stay tuned for Part 2 on Thursday.Follow Isabella on her website, isabellaconstantino.com, or on Facebook or Instagram @ic_artconstantly.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of cults, coercive control, emotional abuse, gaslighting, eating disorder themes, trauma, compulsive overwork, isolation, and mention of suicidal ideation. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. International School of Temple Arts (ISTA): Two Insiders Expose Consent, Control, and Cult Dynamics (Part 2)
In Part 2, we continue our convo with Cara Cardoni and “Lina” about ISTA, the International School of Temple Arts, and the deeper red flags that pushed them to finally leave. Cara and Lina describe how the group used glossy language, spiritual framing, and “consent” rhetoric to obscure coercion, while the reality included harm, manipulation, and a system that made it hard to tell what was actually happening. They speak about the moment each of them saw the organization more clearly: Cara describes finding a survivor Facebook group, learning about patterns of abuse, and realizing when she raised concerns, she was DARVOd (Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender, a manipulation tactic used to evade accountability). Lina shares the devastating account of being raped at an ISTA retreat, the years it took her to name it as rape, and the way ISTA’s response, including NDA pressure and refund games, exposed the hypocrisy beneath the “healing” branding. They also dig into the bigger system around ISTA, including labor exploitation, sex work versus trafficking, temple trainings as a funnel, and the overlap with other guru-led communities. The message is clear: if something feels off, leave, because these groups are built to exploit the very human instinct to belong. Also read The Cut’s article, “The Neo-Tantric Sex Group That Promised to Change,” for background on ISTA and Lina’s story. International School of Temple Arts (ISTA): Two Insiders Expose Consent, Control, and Cult Dynamics (Part 1)
This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. In this episode, we sit down with Cara Cardoni and “Lina” (whose real name remains anonymous) to unpack their experience with ISTA, the International School of Temple Arts, AKA the “Harvard of Sacred Sexuality” that turned out to have a lot more red flags than a festival wristband. Cara and Lina describe how they came to ISTA looking for healing, community, intimacy, and expansion, and how the pitch was wrapped in glossy marketing, “consent” language, intensity, and just enough spiritual seasoning to make the whole thing look transformational. We get into the mechanics of how ISTA works, including LGAT sessions, “Horse and Rider,” “Pillow Thrusting,” “sacred spot,” emotional release tools, and the way language was used to lower defenses and keep people compliant. Cara and Lina also talk about the pressure to stay in the room, the expectation to surrender judgment, the push toward sexualized exercises, and how the group’s “no attachments” vibe could be used to make people doubt their own boundaries.A major theme is how easily self-help gets weaponized when charisma, group pressure, and pseudo-intimacy mix. Both guests reflect on the difference between real growth and being manipulated into thinking you’re the problem, and they connect the dots between ISTA’s practices and other groups listeners will know from the show. You’ll want to stay tuned for Part 2.Also read The Cut’s article, “The Neo-Tantric Sex Group That Promised to Change,” for background on ISTA and Lina’s story. Stop the Tall Man, Save the Tiger: Peter Young on the Cult of Uncle Robert Booty (Part 2)
In Part 2 of our conversation with Peter Young, we go deeper into the disturbing story surrounding Uncle Robert Booty and how charisma, secrecy, and unchecked authority created the perfect conditions for harm to go unchallenged. Peter continues to unpack what he witnessed and experienced, shedding light on how manipulation and control can operate in plain sight, especially when wrapped in familiarity, trust, or even humor. We talked about the ripple effects of abuse within close-knit communities, the difficulty of speaking up when the person causing harm is protected (or even celebrated), and the long, complicated process of making sense of it all years later. As always, we look at the broader patterns: how individuals like Uncle Robert Booty can maintain influence, why bystanders stay silent, and what real accountability could look like when systems fail. Part 2 is heavy, but it’s grounded in truth-telling, clarity, and the importance of naming harm out loud.Check out Peter’s memoir, Stop the Tall Man, Save the Tiger, and follow him on his website, authorpeteryoung.com, or on YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of abuse, manipulation, coercive control, family estrangement, and harm within trusted relationships and community settings. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Stop the Tall Man, Save the Tiger: Peter Young on the Cult of Uncle Robert Booty (Part 1)
In Part 1 of our convo with Peter Young, we step into the wild, uncomfortable orbit of Uncle Robert Booty, the “cult” leader who slowly took over Peter’s marriage, family, and sense of reality. Peter talks about his book, Stop the Tall Man, Save the Tiger, and how he first met Paige while working as a sports broadcaster in Idaho, only to discover that her family’s world revolved around a man who demanded blind obedience, spiritual authority, and a whole lot of deeply weird bathroom rules. What starts as a love story turns into a long, slow-burn case study in coercive control, isolation, and spiritual gaslighting. Peter explains how Uncle Robert used Bible verses, “saved” language, and endless conferences to position himself as the gatekeeper to God, while gradually eroding Peter’s role as husband and father. The episode also explores the infamous “true gospel” framing, the pressure to doubt yourself, and the way cult dynamics can hide in plain sight inside family systems and religious language. You won’t want to miss Part 2.Check out Peter’s memoir, Stop the Tall Man, Save the Tiger, and follow him on his website, authorpeteryoung.com, or on YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of coercive control, spiritual, psychological, and emotional abuse, gaslighting, family estrangement, isolation, religious manipulation, child endangerment, and cult indoctrination. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. The Art of Influence: Mind Games’ Alice Hines on NLP and High-Control Manipulation
This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. In this episode, we welcome back Alice Hines, co-host of the Mind Games podcast, and dig into her reporting on neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), NXIVM, and the slippery gremlin bridge between self-help, persuasion, and manipulation. Alice explains how Mind Games traced the overlap between Twin Flames, NLP, and NXIVM. She spoke about interviewing ex-NXIVM president Nancy Salzman—and Sarah appears in episode 8 on NXIVM too.Our conversation gets into how NLP was packaged as a legit-looking psychology tool before drifting into guru territory, sales culture, and cult-adjacent use cases. Alice breaks down the techniques, the industry hype, and the origins of NLP through its two founders, Richard Bandler and John Grinder. We got a bit fired up about how NXIVM borrowed, recycled, and repurposed the same influence tactics. And we talk about Nancy Salzman’s relationship to NLP, the role of “appeal to authority,” and how these tools can be helpful in one context and deeply abusive in another.Be sure to subscribe to the Mind Games podcast and follow Alice Hines on her website alicehines.com, Instagram, X, or TikTok.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of psychological and emotional abuse, sexual coercion, and blackmail/collateral.Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. The Oracle’s Daughter: Harrison Hill on the Aggressive Christianity Missions Training Corps (Part 2)
In Part 2 with Harrison Hill, we go deeper into his book, The Oracle’s Daughter, and the wonderfully unhinged rise of the Aggressive Christianity Missions Training Corps (ACMTC), which started out as Free Love Ministries and then took a hard left into full-blown extremity. Harrison talks about the limited public record, the giant legal paper trail, and the kind of reporting that makes you wonder how anyone ever untangles a cult story without losing their mind.A big focus here is Sarah Green, the oldest child of Jim and Deborah Green, who grew up inside the compound, watched the control tighten, and eventually made her move toward escape. Harrison also traces the timeline from the 1989 legal trouble to the group’s move to rural New Mexico, and finally the 2017 raid and trial that bring the story to a head. Along the way, he digs into Satanic Panic, cult fear tactics, and the weirdly persuasive power of “we’re the only safe people on Earth” energy. He also gets into religion, doubt, and the difference between faith and outright nonsense, which is honestly a pretty solid distinction to keep in your back pocket. Our convo with him is sharp, unsettling, and still somehow darkly funny in that very specific “welcome to the American weirdness machine” kind of way.Be sure to pick up his book, The Oracle’s Daughter, and follow him on Instagram @1harrisonhill.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of coercive control, family separation, religious and emotional abuse, sexual shaming, Satanic Panic, and child endangerment. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. The Oracle’s Daughter: Harrison Hill on the Aggressive Christianity Missions Training Corps (Part 1)
This episode is sponsored by Betterhelp. In this episode, Harrison Hill joins us to discuss his book The Oracle’s Daughter and the rise and fall of the Aggressive Christianity Missions Training Corps (ACMTC), a group that began as Free Love Ministries and spiraled into an intensely controlling Christian cult. He explains how founders Jim and Deborah Green evolved from 1960s hippies into charismatic leaders, built a world of early-morning prayer, deliverance/exorcisms, relentless meetings, and total obedience, and drew people in with a mix of housing, food, work, and spiritual certainty.Harrison also traces the stories of the women at the center of the book: Deborah Green, her daughter Sarah, and Maura Schmierer, whose slow movement into the group shows how cult involvement often happens in small, incremental steps rather than one dramatic leap. He describes the group’s use of “God’s army” rhetoric, demon-based explanations for ordinary feelings like fatigue, the deliberate cutting off of “blood ties,” and the way family bonds were treated as a threat to the movement’s authority. You’ll definitely wanna stay tuned for Part 2 of our convo.Be sure to pick up his book, The Oracle’s Daughter, and follow him on Instagram @1harrisonhill.Trigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of coercive control, emotional and spiritual abuse, family separation, exorcism/deliverance practices, and references to child endangerment. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Holy Disobedience: Melissa Duge Spiers on the Seventh Day Adventist Church (Part 2)
Part 2 with Melissa Duge Spiers picks up at the “WTF moment” when a call about her beloved father—a once‑celebrated Adventist youth pastor and doctor—exposes him as a child predator and shatters the good‑dad/bad‑mom story she’d carried her whole life. She walks listeners through confronting her parents, befriending “Dr. Z,” a former teen congregant who details the grooming and abuse, and realizing how deeply the Seventh‑day Adventist structure protected her father from quiet removal deals and put him back in the pulpit despite promises to keep him away from children. She zooms out to the broader SDA pattern: stories pouring into her social channels, the church’s historic role in conversion therapy and even female genital mutilation, and how these institutional obsessions with sex and control shaped her own relationships, including a dangerous “cult of one” partnership she ultimately escaped with the help of a religious‑trauma therapist and psychedelic‑assisted work. As she finishes her memoir audiobook and helps launch a new mass‑tort case against the Adventist Church, Melissa shares what real healing has looked like—naming crimes as crimes, accepting there may never be full closure, and doing the slow, ongoing deconstruction that turns “I left” into genuine freedom on the other side.To file an abuse claim again Seventh-day Adventist Church with Pintas & Mullins: https://www.seventhdayadventist-claims.comBe sure to pick up Melissa’s memoir, Holy Disobedience, when it launches this week, and follow her at The Glory Whole on Instagram and TikTok or on her Substack page: substack.com/@melissadugespiersTrigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of child sexual abuse, grooming by a clergy member, institutional cover‑ups, religious and spiritual abuse, conversion therapy, circumcision and female genital mutilation, and narcissistic/abusive relationships. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Holy Disobedience: Melissa Duge Spiers on the Seventh Day Adventist Church (Part 1)
In Part 1 of our episode with Melissa Duge Spiers, she pulls back the curtain on Seventh‑day Adventism (SDA)—a massive but strangely invisible denomination she describes as a classic end‑times cult built on control of food, bodies, and behavior. She traces the movement’s roots through prophet Ellen G. White, mad‑hatters‑era health fads, Kellogg’s cornflakes‑as‑anti‑masturbation tool, and the church’s global education and medical empire, which still funnels power to “crusty old white men” in Washington while aggressively proselytizing in vulnerable communities.Melissa zoomed into her own multi‑generational SDA family: a great‑grandmother pulled in by a job and schooling for her kids, generations of Adventist doctors, and parents who enforced extreme modesty, hair and weight control, media bans, and purity culture so intense that even nail polish and books were policed. Gymnastics, banned Saturday competitions, secret library runs, and a “shirt” virginity metaphor all shaped her sexuality and body image. As a teen, she decided to reclaim her agency by deliberately “losing” her virginity to a public‑school athlete, only to replay the same patriarchal script later through older conservative partners and dysfunctional marriages that echoed SDA-style submission without the theology.Be sure to pick up Melissa’s memoir, Holy Disobedience, when it launches this week, and follow her at The Glory Whole on Instagram and TikTok or on her Substack page: substack.com/@melissadugespiersTrigger warning: This episode contains frank discussion of religious and spiritual abuse, body‑ and weight‑shaming, coercive purity culture and sexual scripts, and child corporal punishment. Also…let it be known that:The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. ABOUT THIS SHOW
Think you might be in a cult?
