How Should We Recite the Message of the Quran? “…recite the Quran in a moderate, measured, melodious voice.” 73:4 (Read other people's translation of 73:4) We should translate the Quran with "tarteel" (تَرْتِيلًا). I translate the word “tarteel” as "a moderate, measured, melodious voice". Muhammad the Prophet was certainly the first person to recite the Quran with tarteel. And Muslims of course still recite it this way today. Muhammed the Prophet recited the message of the Quran with a burst of moving sound separated by definite silence; projected at a volume that others could overhear (73:20). (Read other people's translation of "tarteel") But did the Angel Gabriel recite the message to Muhammed the Prophet with tarteel? And did God recite it to the Angel Gabriel with tarteel? If God or the Angel Gabriel were the first to recite the message with tarteel, does that mean that God and Angel Gabriel recited this message in Arabic, and thus spoke Arabic? I would not imagine so. But even if God and the Angel Gabriel did recite the message in Arabic, would it have been possible for them to recite the message in a language other than Arabic? Indeed. Also, if Muhammad the Prophet did not speak Arabic but some other language, would he have been able to recite the message of the Quran with tarteel? I think the answer is certainly, yes. Why do you call it Quranic Recitation? -ic (e.g. Quranic) means : having the character or form of : of or relating to : coming from or containing I call use the it recitation simply because the conventional word for singing the Quran, whether from memory or a book, is recitation. Therefore what we have here, at least by definition, is Quranic recitation.
