62 - Ghostbusters, Star Trek Beyond, Weiner, Revelation Film Festival
Explicit Content It's finally here. Ghostbusters. The film that caused a million virgins to cry into the void gets a look in. Put down your pitchforks. Andrew watched the latest Star Trek film - this time taking the idea of trekking into... well... beyond with Star Trek Beyond. The pun-tastic documentary on disgraced congressman Anthony Weiner gets sizzled to size in Weiner. Andrew then discusses many of the films he watched at this years Revelation Film Festival which are - deep breath - Suburra, Baskin, Atmo HorroX, Paths of the Soul, The Land of the Enlightened, All Things Ablaze and The Love Witch. 61 - High-Rise, Demolition, Mustang, Queen of Earth
Explicit Content We return with another one of Andrew's most anticipated films of the year - High-Rise - which screened as part of this years Revelation Film Festival. Opening that festival was Jean-Marc Vallée's Jake Gyllenhaal dead wife flick, Demolition. Not keen on giving the men the entire spotlight we take a look at one of the best foreign language films of the year (hey, don't take our word for it, it was nominated for an Oscar), Mustang. Finally, we go full circle with Elisabeth Moss films and talk about Alex Ross Perry's Queen of Earth. 0:56 - Intro6:45 - High-Rise22:11 - Demolition37:48 - Mustang52:11 - Queen of Earth1:00:36 - Wind Up/Closing Music - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Higg's Boson Blues Andrew's review of High-Rise Andrew's review of DemolitionFollow us on twitter at ABFilmReview, Facebook at ABFilmReview, or on the Podbros Network. 60 - The BFG, Finding Dory, The Conjuring 2, Money Monster, Hello, My Name is Doris, Revelation Film Festival
Explicit Content Did you miss us? We're back with out c*ntsatcheliest episode yet. It's a fairly long one, but we cover a lot of films and everything from politics, mental health, television, dating elderly women. It's all here. For some reason, Andrew dragged Bernadette along to see The BFG. He's eternally sorry for his actions. Andrew saw Finding Dory and repeats mostly what's already been said about that film. A while ago Andrew and Bernadette watched The Conjuring 2 which Bernadette is convinced has a subtitle but really, after lots of googling, it appears it doesn't. Bernadette utilised some random free tickets we got in the mail to see Money Monster. And finally, the romantic comedy/drama/wunderkind film Hello, My Name is Doris is discussed. Oh, and after that, a bit of a long discussion about what you should watch on TV. Also, the Revelation Film Festival gets a look in as Andrew and Bernadette suggest some films to check out while the festival is on. We also seem to be joined by a neighbour's dog along the way as well. 0:31 - Intro/Australian Politics discussion11:43 - The BFG36:07 - Finding Dory45:23 - The Conjuring 256:30 - Money Monster1:05:26 - Hello, My Name is Doris1:23:15 - Revelation Film Festival discussion/TV discussion/Wind Up/Closing Music - The Herd - 2020 Andrew's review of Art of the Prank. 59 - Chasing Asylum, Warcraft, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, The Nice Guys, An/Sweet Bean
Explicit Content We're back after a week off with a massive show. We first off deal with the essential documentary Chasing Asylum which takes a hard - and risky - look at Australia's stance on asylum seekers. I highly recommend hitting the many links below and find out more information regarding this situation. Next up Andrew looks at one of the biggest bombs of the year, Warcraft. Next, the mutant turtle superhero film gets a look in with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Shane Black is back with his noir-esque comedy The Nice Guys - do Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling match up to Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer? Finally, we look at the Japanese film An - or as it's known in America Sweet Bean. 0:38 - Intro9:00 - Chasing Asylum42:18 - Warcraft52:49 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows1:04:40 - The Nice Guys1:17:04 - An/Sweet Bean1:26:04 - Wind Up/Closing Music - The Herd - 77% Visit Chasing Asylum for information about the film, where it's showing and what you can do to help. 58 - Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Green Room, The First Monday in May, How to Be Single, Grimsby
Explicit Content An exciting week this week as we discuss what could be one of the best films of the year - Taika Waititi's Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Spoiler alert - it's a great film and you need to watch it as soon as you possibly can. Next up is Jeremy Saulnier's horror-esque film Green Room. From those two films we go a bit different with the clothing/museum documentary The First Monday in May. Finally, we touch on the soon-to-DVD/streaming rom-com How to Be Single, which in turn inspires Bernadette to go on about the misguided elphant-based comedy Grimsby. 0:33 - Intro4:37 - Hunt for the Wilderpeople26:47 - Green Room42:49 - The First Monday in May53:55 - How to Be Single/Grimsby1:14:31 - Wind Up/Closing Music - Spiderbait - Buy Me a Pony Andrew's review for Green Room. We then split ways as Andrew discusses the Australian film Pawno and in turn also discusses why Australian cinema is so damn great and essential. Bernadette watched The Boss. The AB Film Review Two Year Anniversary Episode - Part Two
Explicit ContentIt's our two year anniversary. Yep, we've been doing this podcast for two years and haven't killed each other yet. To celebrate our anniversary, we fielded some questions from some listeners, while also answering a truck load of questions about films we raised to ourselves. We happen to get raging drunk here as well, so this very unedited podcast gets released into the world with minimal polish. As this is part two, I have little recollection of what is said in this episode, but, it's two hours of drunken discussion. Captain America: Civil War Review
Explicit Content Well, it's another superhero film. This time, it's the third Captain America film which is really more of an Avengers 2.5 film rather than a full blown Captain America film. Being the massive superhero fans that we are, we try and tackle this film as best as possible. Fortunately, compared to other full episodes on these massive blockbuster films, we don't jump right into spoilers. 0:33 - Intro 45:52 - Spoiler discussion 1:36:22 - Closing Music - Something for Kate - Captain (Million Miles an Hour) Follow us on twitter at ABFilmReview, Facebook at ABFilmReview, or on the Podbros Network. Explicit Content It's a bit all over the shop this week as we look at the Olympic underdog tale of Michael 'Eddie' Edwards in Eddie the Eagle. Jeff Nichols once again proves himself as a talent to keep an eye on with the sci-fi-esque Midnight Special. Andrew politely rips into The Jungle Book, while Bernadette talks about My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. 54 - Sherpa, Zootopia, Grandma, Bone Tomahawk, The Mermaid, The Lady in the Van
Explicit Content Another episode that begins with another rambling story. This time, we regale with a story about how we were almost broken into. We then launch into a lengthy discussion on the essential documentary, Sherpa. We then move into discussing all things Shakira with the Disney animated film Zootopia. This brings about the beginning of a heated discussion, naturally. We then move into discussing, and arguing, but somehow agreeing through argument, the Paul Weitz written and directed film, Grandma. We then move into Western territory with the Patrick Wilson as a broken legged cowboy film Bone Tomahawk. Finally, Andrew runs down the Stephen Chow film The Mermaid and Bernadette tells us about The Lady in the Van. 0:35 - Intro 12:55 - Sherpa 38:47 - Zootopia 48:39 - Grandma 1:06:02 - Bone Tomahawk 1:18:04 - The Mermaid 1:22:51 - The Lady in the Van 1:29:32 - Wind Up/Closing Music - The Sleepy Jackson - Good Dancers Andrew's review for The MermaidAndrew's review for The Chant of Jimmie BlacksmithFollow us on twitter at ABFilmReview, Facebook at ABFilmReview, or on the Podbros Network. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice - Full Spoiler Review
EXPLICIT - FULL SPOILERS Well, it's time for Batman and Superman to meet themselves on screen for the first time. It's somehow fallen to the hands of Zac Snyder to bring this fable to the screen and showcase this leet epic battle in all its glory. Well, some glory. Maybe no glory. Who knows. As Dave from Pop Culture Case Study would say... Oh boy. We quickly go off the rails on this one when we discuss the mystery box extravangza that is Bad Robot's 10 Cloverfield Lane. Be aware people, we jump right into spoilers on this one. We then move into more less heated territory when we talk about the latest 'horror' film, The Witch, or if you're a fan of the letter V, The VVitch. We then move onto the Henrik Ibsen inspired Australian film The Daughter. Finally, things start looking up for Bernadette as we move into the Ralph Fiennes acting bonanza that is A Bigger Splash. Finally, we look at a film that Bernadette has seen and discussed before, the Simon Pegg and Lake Bell rom-com Man Up. We then go into ten minutes of profanities before closing with Alex Lloyd's Lucky Star after Bernadette throws in the towel. 0:00:30 - Intro0:02:04 - 10 Cloverfield Lane - with spoilers0:29:40 - The Witch0:43:23 - The Daughter0:57:05 - A Bigger Splash1:13:55 - Man Up1:20:46 - Wrap Up Andrew's written review of 10 Cloverfield Lane can be read here.Andrew's written review of The Witch can be read here.Andrew's appearance on the Get Reel Movies Podcast can be heard here. Well, what can I say, it's about time some of Andrew's script writing reached the world. (Given it's Andrew who writes these show notes, he's now referring to himself in the third person. Fool.) After finding some old files, Andrew reads his top 20 films of all time from 2003, followed by a reading of the great script - Spud Deluxe. Following that is the stuff you actually tuned in for: Our discussions of the films Anomalisa, Hail, Caesar! (that's one film, not two films Hail and Caesar!), Son of Saul, Chi-Raq and The Danish Girl. So, a short rundown... animated midlife existential crisis film by Oscar winner Charlie Kaufman, 50's studio system film by Oscar winners The Coen Bros., George Clooney, Frances McDormand, and co. Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language film Son of Saul. Honorary Oscar owner Spike Lee's latest film about the rising gun violence in America, Chi-Raq. And finally, Bernadette gives her best rundown of the Oscar winning The Danish Girl. Lot's of Oscar related films here. Hopefully that helps with the SEO. 88th Academy Awards Winners Rundown
In possibly our sweariest of swear filled podcasts, we run through the 88th Academy Award winners and go through who we think was deserving, as well as who we think shouldn't have won. We run through how Chris Rock did during the night, and then... and then... we somehow end up going into a huge tirade about diversity which almost kills Bernadette as she struggles with a cough. In what was supposed to be only twenty minutes long we somehow end up going off at all things Hollywood, internet trolls, Fantastic Four, Michael B. Jordan, Minions, animated characters giving out awards, everything Australian, you name it, we possibly offend or upset it in this episode. Oscars are abound within this episode as we take a look at two of the films vying for the Best Picture prize - The Big Short and The Revenant. We spill the beans from the Diary of a Teenage Girl and assess the meaning of a relationship in the WWII drama, Phoenix. Finally, we get very vague as we try and cover the genre bending indie romance, Spring. 0:00:34 - Intro 0:06:14 - The Big Short 0:28:11 - The Revenant 0:50:37 - Diary of a Teenage Girl 1:04:55 - Phoenix 1:13:26 - Spring 1:21:28 - Wrap Up The song at the end of this episode is Jeff Strong's Why Would I Lie?. 48 - Suffragette, Amy, Clouds of Sils Maria, The Overnight, The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?
Ah, bring on the filthy. We go into the gutter in this episode fairly quickly before bringing it back to seriousness with a discussion about the Carey Mulligan lead film, Suffragette. We look at the documentary on singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse with Amy. We then get a little meta with the Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart actress drama, Clouds of Sils Maria. Fake dicks and happy ending massages get a look in with The Overnight. And finally, whatever happened to Tim Burton's Superman film? Covering the Paolo Sorrentino film Youth, followed by the Cary Fukunaga Netflix original, Beasts of No Nation, we then touch on Iranian vampires with A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. Australian stand up comedian Carl Barron's film Manny Lewis gets a look in before finally wrapping up with some politico-journalist drama with William F. Blakely and Gore Vidal in Best of Enemies. Alright, no mucking around here, the following podcast is a 110% SPOILER DISCUSSION of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It's finally here. Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The non-Mac & Me remake that Andrew was hoping for. In this episode we go FULL SPOILERS with a long rundown from two non-Star Wars fans for one of the biggest films of the decade and most likely the biggest film of the year. 45 - The Program, 99 Homes, Tehran Taxi, Cop Car
In this episode things get a little bit heated as we discuss The Program and 99 Homes. Bernadette defends Andrew Garfield's acting. Andrew doesn't think he's very good. I guess that's a spoiler right there. We also re-discuss a film we talked about earlier this year, Jafar Panahi's Taxi - or Tehran Taxi. And finally look at Kevin Bacon's latest, Cop Car. 44 - Creed, Kumiko the Treasure Hunter, The Hunting Ground, Dope
Man Tears: The Musical - Andrew stars in this much anticipated sequel to Cinderella Man: Eternal Tears. Creed pulls on heart strings that Andrew had no idea he had. Many tears are had. Much hyperbole is delivered. In this episode of the AB Film Review, Andrew and Bernadette are no longer beholden to ruminents - those damn sheep. Instead, they also discuss the adventures of Bunzo, Train Rabbit and diligent treasure hunter, Kumiko in Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter. They get a little bit serious with the latest Kirby Dick documentary The Hunting Ground. Finally, Andrew accidentally gets racist with Dope (he doesn't mean it!) a film that challenges as much as it rewards. That's all I have to say about things this week. Deal with it. I forgot to mention, we get quite meta in this episode as we discuss exactly what a review is. Why we review. Who reviews. What is the action of reviewing. Should we have possibly chosen a better title than something something film review? Does the notion that we're a review show turn people off the show? Should we just end it all now and return our library books and say, enough is enough, we're sick and tired, we're not going to take this anymore? I give it one thumb up, one thumb down. And the third thumb is there for added effect. The song at the end of this episode is The Herd covering Sam Cooke's A Change is Gonna Come. 43 - By the Sea, Mistress America, Force Majeure, The Secret in Their Eyes
In an attempt to write better Podcast episode summaries, I've decided to give a little bit more of a run down of what happens in each episode. I have no idea if people even read these things or not. Do you? I do sometimes. Most of the time I just hit play on the podcast and go right ahead into the audio glory that awaits. Is this episode further audio glory for the AB Film Review podcast? I have no idea. I don't tend to listen to these things back again. Maybe it is. Maybe, somewhere out there, in this wide wonderous world of ours, there is someone who loves listening to the ocker sounds of an Australian married couple discussing Angelina Jolie-Pitt and Brad Pitt in a faux-Italy seaside town in By the Sea. Maybe there isn't. We'll never know. Or will we? I don't know. Stop going meta Andrew. Nobody cares. We also discuss what it means to be a hipster with Noah Baumbach's Mistress America. Given the fact that we record a podcast about movies, I feel we have some authority on the subject of what it means to be a hipster. What would you do if an avalanche was coming towards you? Would you protect your child or your iPhone? Or, would you question why you chose an iPhone when you've been using Android for years now and you're just not happy with your choice. Would you then take this moment of questioning why you went with iOS over Android to figure out when your contract is up and you can move back to Android? Or, maybe you'd take the moment to question every bad decision you've made in your life. I'm not sure. Force Majeure kind of looks into that and we discuss that film here. Bernadette watched Secret in Their Eyes. We also go in depth into mental illness with Welcome to Me. So, there's that. Follow us on twitter at ABFilmReview. Follow us on Podbros Network. 42 - Brooklyn, The Lobster, End of the Tour, Hungry Hearts
We get a little serious in this episode as we discuss Oscar hopeful Brooklyn. The absurd comedy starring Colin Farrell, Colin Farrell's mustache and narration by Rachel Weisz, The Lobster gets assessed. The biopic The End of the Tour gets a look in with all the seriousness and depth that a film about David Foster Wallace deserves. Finally, vegetarians run for the hills! Hungry Hearts is given an in depth look in. Things turn scatalogical near the end, as per usual. Follow us on twitter at ABFilmReview, Facebook at ABFilmReview, or on the Podbros Network. Bernadette says sickness be damned! and makes her way through episode 36 discussing the recent documentary The Wolfpack. An argument threatens to begin with Straight Outta Compton. Andrew takes a look at the new Australian crime drama Cut Snake, as well as new horror flick Creep. Bernadette runs down Dark Places, True Story and Hot Pursuit. Finally, the mind control drama Faults gets assessed in a hotel room. We get a little bit un-PC in this episode as well, but at least we don't boo Adam Goodes.
