Animal Ethics was formed to address the problem of speciesism, the discrimination against animals who belong to a particular species. We have a particular focus on helping animals who live in the wild because they are the largest and most neglected group affected by speciesism. We aim to have the biggest impact over the longest period of time possible. We focus on increasing concern for nonhuman animals and on promoting practical work to benefit them over the long term.

Description: This audio turns to what different kinds of ethical theories imply about how we should treat animals. We will see that despite their differences, they all imply (or are at least compatible with) full moral consideration of animals. Description: This audio considers further arguments against speciesism. First, the argument from relevance considers that we should consider only criteria relevant to the question and the only criteria that seems relevant to moral consideration is sentience. The audio then explains why sentience is the only thing that implies that organisms can be harmed or benefited and why it is therefore so important. It next explains why, because they have an interest in positive experiences, death is also a harm for animals. In this course about wild animal suffering, you'll learn about the plight of animals living in the wild. Description: This audio considers the first set of arguments against speciesism. It describes how many arguments for speciesism simply beg the question, which is to say they represent circular reasoning. It then considers that for any trait someone might consider to justify a higher moral status for humans, we can point to some humans who lack that trait, and disregarding them would clearly be unacceptable. Finally, the video considers a positive argument against speciesism, the argument from impartiality based on the veil of ignorance thought experiment. Description: This audio turns to perhaps the best case of helping large numbers of animals who live in the wild: vaccinating them. There have already been large successful vaccination campaigns which have completely eliminated the disease rinderpest and greatly reduced the prevalence of rabies in large areas. These vaccination programs were not done for the sake of the animals themselves, but they still greatly helped those animals and they can help to inform future vaccination programs. Description: This next audio discusses various other ways in which we can help animals who live in the wild. These include healing sick, injured, or orphaned animals, building shelters, and helping hungry or thirsty animals. Just like humans, nonhuman animals can also benefit from medical aid when they are sick or injured. Some may also benefit from shelters to keep them safe from the weather and predators. Animals are often hungry or thirsty, and providing food or water to them can be a good way of helping them in the right circumstances. Finally, orphaned animals are especially in need of help because they are unable to care for themselves. This is part of module 1 of our course about wild animal suffering. This video discusses how we can help trapped animals or animals injured in natural disasters. Animals sometimes become trapped (in mud for example) and may eventually die unless freed. Just as they affect humans, natural disasters can also devastate animals who live in the wild. We should celebrate animal rescues in these cases. Description: This audio turns to how different reproductive strategies affect the welfare of animals. Unfortunately, the reproductive strategy that is most prevalent, r-selection, is also the one that results in the most suffering. Animals who are r-selected have large numbers of offspring and invest very little resources in each one. This unfortunately means that almost all of these animals will die painfully before reaching adulthood. This is part of module 1 of our course about wild animal suffering. Description: This is the last audio of our videos describing the harms that animals living in the wild face. It describes the many ways they can be harmed through accidents. Birds can collide with trees, elephants can get stuck in swamps, deers can puncture their eyes on low hanging branches, and squirrels can fall out of trees. Unlike humans, nonhuman animals have extremely limited ability to care for their injuries; often they are unable to take the time to heal because of the pressure to find food. Injuries can potentially become chronic or lead to death. This is part of module 1 of our course about wild animal suffering. Description: Most animals who are ever born die of thirst or starvation shortly after being born or hatched. Those who survive may have to search for food and water at great risk to their lives and wellbeing. We know that, at least for some animals, thirst can be a terrifying and painful experience. Anxiety is also a major harm to animals in the wild, and for some it appears that living in a constant state of anxiety is an adaptive response that increases their chances for survival. For this to be possible, the most important thing is for our societies to care about helping animals in the wild. Advocacy and research to help push society in this direction is therefore incredibly important.

This is a critical time for us to help these animals by providing care for them to replace the role of lost parents.

Description: Audio version of web page: https://www.animal-ethics.org/providing-for-basic-needs/ Some of the main reasons animals die in the wild are weather conditions and lack of food and water. Moreover, during food shortages those who don’t starve to death suffer from malnourishment and hunger, as well as thirst. However, it is possible to build shelters for them which can make a difference between life and death and can prevent significant suffering. It’s sometimes possible to provide animals with food and water, although this needs to be calculated very carefully, as otherwise we may increase, rather than reduce, wild animal suffering.

Description: Audio version of web page: https://www.animal-ethics.org/can-animals-wild-harmed-ways-domesticated-animals-humans/ Animals living in nature endure significant harms, as other animals would be harmed in similar circumstances. Humans are not the only beings that can feel suffering and wellbeing. Moreover, wild animal suffering is prevalent. There is no reason to have attitudes towards animals living in nature different from the ones we would have if they were domesticated animals or humans, so we should try to help animals in nature whenever possible.

Description: Audio version of web page: https://www.animal-ethics.org/wild-animal-suffering-matters/evolutionary-reasons-suffering-prevails-nature/ Natural selection works when different individuals come into existence but only some of them survive, as there are not sufficient resources available for everyone. Because of this, many individuals come into existence only to die shortly after, and a reproductive strategy maximizing the number of new individuals that are born may prevail for evolutionary reasons, even if it entails that wild animal suffering and premature death increase tremendously.

Description: Audio version of web page: https://www.animal-ethics.org/wild-animal-suffering-section/situation-of-animals-wild/diseases-nature/ Animals in the wild can suffer many different kinds of diseases, some of which are very painful and can kill them slowly. Even those that are not lethal cause them significant suffering. While it would often be possible to vaccinate them, this is only done in some cases, and many animals who could be saved will die.

Description: Audio version of web page: https://www.animal-ethics.org/wild-animal-suffering-matters/population-dynamics-animal-suffering/ The reproductive strategy that is overwhelmingly prevalent in the wild consists of having huge numbers of offspring of which the vast majority die not long after coming into existence. This is the main cause of wild animal suffering, as it means most animals in nature have little time for enjoying positive experiences and often die in ways that involve significant suffering (such as starvation, dehydration, cold or being eaten alive). In this way, population dynamics suggest that suffering prevails over happiness in nature.

Description: Audio version of web page: https://www.animal-ethics.org/wild-animal-suffering-section/situation-of-animals-wild/psychological-stress-wild-animals/ In addition to suffering physically, many animals also undergo significant psychological stress due to the environmental pressures they have to endure. They often find themselves in situations in which they suffer fear and distress, and, in the case of some animals, sorrow when their offspring or animals within their group die.

Description: Audio version of web page: https://www.animal-ethics.org/wild-animal-suffering-section/situation-of-animals-wild/physical-injuries-wild-animals/ In the wild, animals are often injured for a number of reasons. The actual wounds may kill the animals, or their injuries may cripple them in ways that are fatal, such as certain types of mutilations. In other cases, even though they survive, they are partly crippled or suffer chronic pain, and their lives are much shorter.

Description: Audio version of web page: https://www.animal-ethics.org/wild-animal-suffering-section/situation-of-animals-wild/malnutrition-thirst-wild-animals/ One of the most important factors limiting the growth of animal populations is the lack of food and water, which can kill huge numbers of animals. We can imagine how much suffering this entails. One of the reasons why many animals have huge numbers of offspring is in order to make it possible that at least some of them can find food and survive, even if it means many others starve to death.
