Episode 26: Kubo and the Two Strings

Hey guys! This time we're talking about Kubo and the Two Strings, Laika's most recent stop-motion animated feature. We talk about some of our favorite moments in the movie as well as some of the moments that struck us as indicative of the love and care that went into making the movie. We also touch briefly on the fact that Studio Laika was once Vinton Studios. If you're interested in exploring that more, click here. Also Tracy appeared on the Unfortunate Associates podcast; you can check that out here. As always, thanks for listening!

    Episode 25: Little Witch Academia

Hey guys, we are back and this time we're talking about Little Witch Academia and Enchanted Parade. These pair of adorable OVAs were produced by Studio Trigger, best known for Kill La Kill. 3. 25

    Episode 24: Felidae

Hello guys, happy summer! This episode we talk about the German-animated noir film, Felidae. Felidae follows the story of a cat named Francis trying decipher the mystery of why cats keep turning up dead in his neighborhood. This movie gets a little gruesome and as a result, so does this episode, so if discussion of animal cruelty or death disturbs you, it might be best to skip this one. That said, we had a blast talking about it; it is a beautiful movie. Thanks for listening!

  4. 24

Episode 23: Cartoon All-stars to the Rescue

Hello again! We are back with a new episode! This month we review an old PSA cartoon called Cartoon All-starts to the Rescue. We do so at the request of our guest, Dr. Christopher Douglas, a friend of Robbie's who recently received his PhD. We talk about the oddities of a cartoon attempting to push an anti-drug message while also trying to shoe-horn in all the requisite copyrighted characters possible. It's a bit of a wild ride. Enjoy!

  5. 23

    Episode 22: Fantastic Planet

We're back again, guys! This time we're reviewing a movie called Fantastic Planet. This was another request by Angela and boy, was it something! We really enjoyed this one and we hope you enjoy us talkin' about it. Happy listening!

    Episode 21: Paranorman

Hey guys! We're back at you with a new episode! This time we're talking about the movie Paranorman, which was requested by one of our fans, Angela! We were, of course, happy to make an episode about it. Mostly we focus on some of the more interesting technical aspects of the film, but we also talk about some of the bigger points of the movie. Hope you guys enjoy!

    Fievel Goes West Commentary

Hey guys! Remember a while back we did commentary for The Brave Little Toaster? Well we had a lot of fun doing that so we thought, why not do it again? So we're doing it now for one of our favorite movies, Fievel Goes West. We made it pretty easy to sync up with the movie, so load that DVD, VHS, or unmentioned format up and get ready!

Episode 19: Gravity Falls is Ending!

Hey guys! We are back! We're really sorry about the infrequency of our posting lately, but we are currently working on getting something a little more consistent going. In the meantime, we bring you this episode about Gravity Falls and the fact that it's ending. We're both huge fans and we thought it'd be fun to an episode about. So join us as we discuss parts one and two of Weirdmageddon.  Also, as we mention in the episode, we appeared in another podcast! Wow! Cool stuff! We were on Cynical Cartoons podcast with Tyler. Episode 17 (kinda): The Prince of Egypt

Hello listeners! It's been a while! As you've probably noticed, a number is missing in our sequence. We recorded an episode 16, but didn't feel that the quality was up to snuff, we scrapped it. Sadly, we scrapped it after we recorded this episode, so our numbers are a little off. Whoops. Onto business! This time we reviewed Prince of Egypt, Dreamworks' first feature. We talk about things we loved, things we hated, and some of the facts we found interesting. As always, we hope you enjoy! Happy listening!

  12. 16

Episode 15: The Rescuers Down Under

Hey guys! Sorry about the delay between episodes lately. Things have been getting busier, but we're trying to fall into a more consistent schedule. Anyways! This week we talk about the 1990 animated feature, The Rescuers Down Under. The sequel to the 70s release "The Rescuers", Down Under takes the characters down to Australia to help a boy save an eagle. While it didn't do terribly well at the box office, it's an old favorite of ours, so join as we talk about how great George C. Scott is at being a villain and how awesome Bob Hope is at being a tiny, somewhat apprehensive mouse. Enjoy!

  13. 15

    Episode 14: The Iron Giant

Hey guys, sorry it's been a while since we've put up an episode, but we're back this week with The Iron Giant! This 1999 animated feature focuses on a the story of a boy and a giant robot, but not in the way you might think. 15 years before the release of Big Hero 6, this underrated gem tells the story of 11 year old Hogarth Hughes as he bonds with an enormous lost robot from outer space. Set in the 1950s during the height of Cold War paranoia, he teaches the metal gentle giant about the value of life and the importance of choosing your own path and not necessarily the one you were designed for. This movie really got screwed out of the big release that it deserved, which we'll talk about as well as our usual discussion about our favorite moments in the film. As always, contact us on Twitter for comments and review ideas! @tctrauscht @lobster_writer

Bonus Episode! The Brave Little Toaster Commentary

Hey guys! This week we've got something of a bonus episode for you! So when we initially watched the Brave Little Toaster, we conceived the idea of doing a commentary with it, a la Rifftrax. We weren't ultimately satisfied with it taking place of our normal episode, but we still thought it might be fun for ya'll to listen to alongside the movie. Hope you enjoy!

  15. 13

    Episode 13: The Critic

Hello again, listeners! Join us this week as we discuss the cult classic TV show, The Critic. Made in the early 90s, the Critic is a show about Jay Sherman, a somewhat unpopular and goofy film critic with a show where he talks about upcoming movies. Join us as we discuss why this show didn't really enjoy the success we feel it deserved as well as why we love the show so much. Thanks for listening, enjoy!

  16. 12

Episode 12: The Brave Little Toaster

Welcome back! Join us this week as we talk about the surprisingly dark 80s film, The Brave Little Toaster! This week we talk about the difference between our childhood expectations and memories and the movie as it is. We also talk about how many of the animators on the film later became animators at Pixar and how some of the themes from this movie carry over to much of Pixar's work. Overall, it's a fun, at times harsh, romp. Enjoy! Sorry we took so long to get this one out; we've been pretty busy lately and this was where we fell apart. We hope to get back on track soon. Thanks for listening!

  17. 11

Episode 11: All Dogs Go to Heaven

Hello once again! Join us this week as we talk about the 1989 Don Bluth film, All Dogs Go to Heaven. We discuss some of the odder parts of the movie that we noticed as well as some of the darker aspects of its production. We also talk about Don Bluth's career at large. It's a bit of a strange and dark tale, so strap in! As always, if you have any movies, thoughts, or suggestions, feel free to hit us up on Twitter. Thanks for listening!

  18. 10

    Episode 10: Interstella 5555

Join Robbie and Tracy this week as we discuss the Daft Punk-related Interstella 5555. This somewhat odd animated movie was made to sync up with the 2001 Daft Punk album Discovery. Join us as we discuss the amusing oddities of a movie that appears to have been produced out of time as well as some of the frustrating truths about the music industry. We hope you have as much fun listening to this episode as we had making it! Thanks for listening! Find us on Twitter at @lobster_writer and @tctrauscht!

  19. 9

Episode 9: The Triplets of Belleville

This week, join Tracy and Robbie as they talk about the charmingly surreal French animated film The Triplets of Belleville, a movie about the diminutive Madam Souza's adventures to save her cyclist grandson, Champion. We talk about some of the reasons behind the unique character design, fantastic music and the the director's not-so-subtle opinions on the biggest giant of North American animation.

  20. 8

Episode 8: The Adventures of Mark Twain

This week, join Robbie and Tracy as they dive into the surreal and fascinatingly detailed world of Will Vinton's The Adventures of Mark Twain. Though he's best known as the creative mind behind 80s commercial mascots like the California Raisins and The Noid, Vinton was the father of modern claymation. He combines humorist literature and imaginative design into a beautiful feat of stop motion film-making. The story follows Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and Becky Thatcher as they go on a high-flying journey with writer Mark Twain through his short stories on a fantastical flying ship. Strange concept? Sure. A huge labor of love with remarkable talent at the helm? Without a doubt. Hope you guys like this one! If you have any comments or film recommendations for something you'd like us to review, follow us on Twitter at @lobster_writer and @tctrauscht! Thank for listening!

  21. 7

    Episode 7: A Goofy Movie

Oh come on, how could we resist? Join Robbie and Tracy as they examine one of their favorite Disney films ever: A Goofy Movie! This strange but heartfelt little gem looks at the unusual bond between father Goofy and his son Max as they take a cross country road trip to the concert of a lifetime. We had a ton of fun recording this episode and hope you guys enjoy it! Contact us via Twitter at @lobster_writer and @tctrauscht for comments or films you'd like us to review. Thanks and happy listening!

  22. 6

Episode 6: The Boy and the World

This week, join Robbie and Tracy as they review the deceptively cute, Brazilian animated film, The Boy and the World. Made entirely without real dialogue, the story follows an imaginative young boy named Cuca on a journey to find his father in a far-off metropolis. We broach such topics as the film's brilliant transitions, minimalist art style, and the fine line films with an environmental message cross, especially in children's entertainment. Thanks for listening, hope you enjoy! If you would like to contact us with questions or future film ideas, find us on Twitter at @lobster_writer and @tctrauscht!

  23. 5

    Episode 5: The Emperor's New Groove/The Sweatbox

This week's episode, take a journey with us into the forbidden realms of the Disney vault and discover the original story behind Disney's The Emperor's New Groove. Structured as a double feature, we watched both that zany comedy we all know and love and compared it to the troubled origin documentary, The Sweatbox. We also discuss some of the technical difficulties of working as an animator. Please let us know what you think on Twitter at @lobster_writer and @tctrauscht! Thanks for listening and hope you enjoy it!

  24. 4

    Episode 4: Paprika

This week, we delve into Satoshi Kon's surrealist mystery anime film, Paprika. If we seem a bit tongue-tie trying to sum up the story, well, that's because it's such a fun but strange film about dreams, crime, technology and a parade of walking (previously inanimate) objects. It's basically what would happen if you mashed Inception and Azumanga Daioh in a blender but much more colorful. This episode is a bit quicker than usual, but we'll be back next week with another episode. If you like what you're hearing and want to contact us, follow @lobster_writer and @tctrauscht on Twitter with comments and what you'd like us to watch next! Thanks and happy listening!

  25. 3

    Episode 3: The Last Unicorn

In this episode, we talk about 1982's nostalgic animated fantasy, The Last Unicorn, and the importance of using modern music by the band America as the soundtrack. We also highlight some of our favorite and least favorite elements of the film. This link: boop leads to a page that has information about Peter S. Beagle's The Last Unicorn screening tour dates. And here is a link to Danny's cover of the title theme song. Contact us on Twitter at @lobster_writer and @tctrauscht if you have questions, comments or ideas for movies you'd like to see us review. Thanks for listening!

  26. 2

    Episode 2: Cats Don't Dance

This week we talk about Cats Don't Dance, the only feature from Turner animation, released in 1997. Apologies for the audio getting a bit strange near the end, we ran into a few technical difficulties while recording. Enjoy!

  27. 1

Episode 1: Song of the Sea

In this, our first episode, we talk about Song of the Sea and some of the themes and motifs present in the film. We also do a little bit of comparing and contrasting with some of other movies. Be forewarned: if you haven't seen the movie, we spoil pretty much the whole thing so if spoilers are gonna be an issue, you'll wanna come back after watching the movie. Thanks for listening!
