Groove takes center stage in Episode 3 of Another Sound from KKJZ Los Angeles. Producer, pianist, and songwriter Sam Barsh joins the podcast to discuss Straight 08, his electrifying new beat-driven project featuring trumpeter Keyon Harrold and drummer Mark Guiliana. A celebrated jazz pianist whose production and songwriting credits include collaborations with Doja Cat, Anderson .Paak, and Kendrick Lamar, Barsh shares how his diverse musical journey informs this bold new release and why rhythm remains at the heart of his creative process.We also meet acclaimed drummer Jonathan Pinson, whose résumé includes performances alongside Mark Turner, Wayne Shorter, and Herbie Hancock. Pinson introduces his dynamic new band, Boom Clap, exploring its forward-looking sound, the inspiration behind the project, and how he's blending jazz tradition with fresh energy and modern grooves.

Joined by saxophonists Isaiah Collier and Lakecia Benjamin, the conversation traces the ways Coltrane’s legacy still shapes improvisation, composition, spirituality, and artistic risk today.Rather than focusing on tribute or imitation, Collier and Benjamin reflect on what it means to inherit a restless musical language, one built on curiosity, discipline, openness, and transformation. Together, they discuss how Coltrane’s influence extends beyond technique or repertoire and into the deeper question of how artists pursue honesty and freedom through their sound.  The inaugural Santa Monica International Jazz Festival celebrates the 100-year anniversaries of Miles Davis and John Coltrane with a cross-generational pool of musicians impacted by their legacies.  Artistic director and legendary bassist Stanley Clarke reflects on formative encounters with Davis; the lasting influence of John Coltrane; and the importance of mentorship. Drummer Vincent Wilburn, nephew of Miles Davis, offers personal remembrances of his uncle’s vision and impact on and off the bandstand. Rising voices Natasha Agrama and Emilio Modeste of Instant Alter share how they transform guidance from mentors into bold, original music. Together, these conversations trace a lineage of knowledge passed from generation to generation. As all of these artists prepare to appear at the festival, our episode weaves their stories into a larger portrait of jazz as a living tradition built on courage and connection.
