Learning on the Line
One multi-day archery competition: standing in a crowd, waiting your turn, and watching hundreds of arrows fly. From people with hypnotic routines to those who just wing it, the day-to-day rhythms and unexpected moments consume your attention and teach lessons you can’t get from practice alone. I've been thinking.....again. As always, you can email [email protected] or find us on Blue Sky and the Strongbow Archers Facebook page. Stay in by the wall and mind the arrows!

EIAC: Extreme Irritation And Cursing.
In the second (and actually the third one too) part of my EIAC review, things get a bit cranky. The Flint round took more out of me than expected, the scores aren’t where I hoped they’d be, and my competitive brain is having serious words with me. EIAC: Day One Reflection
This episode is a sleep-deprived, slightly overheated ramble through day one of the EIAC and, honestly, it’s exactly what you’d expect from recording in a hotel room that feels like a sauna, at an hour when no thoughts should be verbalised. It’s my first proper competition, and I go into everything from the evil early morning start (no, I did not make the 6am practice), to shooting with a genuinely lovely group of women, to trying (and mostly failing) not to loudly sigh and curse my way through every end. There are a few decent shots, a lot of “what am I actually doing here?”, and the realisation that I might be too relaxed about the whole thing. Also featuring: tragic makeup, questionable food situations, deep thoughts about bow poundage, and the ongoing internal battle between “I can do this” and “I should absolutely not be trusted with sharp objects.” It’s messy and a bit all over the place but at the core of it, it’s about being a tiny bit proud of myself. More Bull Than Bullseyes
After a long, unintended radio silence, I’m back again. In and out like a blue arse fly at this stage! Anyway, I'm slightly battered, definitely bruised, and standing (mostly upright) on the shooting line. This episode is a proper catch-up: clusterfuck training sessions, imposter syndrome creeping in, anchor points randomly changing for absolutely no reason, and random waffle that will help you fall asleep. With the EIAC competition coming up, I am questioning what the hell I am doing. Optimism? Delusion? Commitment? We shall have to wait and see. Is the audio weird or am I in need of a hearing test? Bane the Bow: Observing My Stubborn Avoidance
Haaaaaaaapppyyyyyy New Year!! After a couple of quiet months and more skipped sessions than planned, Roberta talks honestly about nearly walking away from archery. Not in a dramatic way, but in the slow, avoid-the-bow-and-hope-it-goes-away kind of way. This is about burnout, expectations, stalled progress, comparison, and how a hobby you love can quietly turn into something heavy. There’s no comeback arc or life lessons here. Just Roberta, a neglected bow (Bane), and turning up again, this time using her stubbornness for something vaguely helpful. Misconceptions & New Friends Needed
This week, Roberta dives into the world of archery misconceptions which include what her friends think she does to the messy and often humbling reality of practice. Her brain has given up so this episode is brought to you by a rogue chia seed. Roberta breaks down myths like “archery is easy,” “you just point and shoot,” and “it’s a calm hobby”. There’s even talk of why anger might sometimes help your aim (but don’t quote her on that). Email [email protected] or find us on Blue Sky and the Strongbow Archers Facebook page. Blindfolds and Punishment Sticks. Oh, and Shooting at Home.
Roberta and Owen talk about what it takes to practice archery at home; the safety checks, the setup, and the occasional chaos. They cover everything from choosing a good backstop to keeping neighbours, dogs, and footballs out of the firing line. As well as some audio issues from Owen's mic, there's a lot of not sticking to the subject by Roberta, a lot of trying to stick to the subject by Owen, a few questionable ideas (blindfolded archery, anyone?), and a reminder that safety comes first… even when it doesn’t sound like it. We’d love your feedback, your questions, and your archery stories. Contact us: [email protected] or on BlueSky at archerynotanarchy.bsky.social Stay in by the wall and mind the arrows!

One Snail Spirit Animal Later…
This week’s episode is a little different and, for Roberta, extra special. She is joined by her child for a thoughtful and totally unscripted conversation about archery, family, and what it’s like learning a sport together. They talk accidental bullseyes, sharing what they've learned from each other, and witnessing a parent's decent in to insanity - it’s a warm mix of curiosity, laughter, and child's wisdom about patience, focus, and having fun. We’d love your feedback, your questions, and your archery stories. Contact us: [email protected] or on BlueSky at archerynotanarchy.bsky.social Stay in by the wall and mind the arrows!

The Mental Game of Archery - Part 2
In the second episode of our chat on The Mental Game of Archery, we dive into the heart of resilience and mental toughness. From bouncing back after a bad day on the line to learning when to let go (and when to laugh at yourself), we explore how archery challenges not just your aim, but your mindset. We talk about the role of self-reflection, how to handle frustration without taking it home, and why building a supportive environment is just as important as nailing your shot cycle. Along the way, there’s plenty of banter, some talk of jammy dodgers, and the eternal debate about “stroking your face.” We’d love your feedback, your questions, and your archery stories. The Mental Game of Archery - Part 1
Roberta and Owen are back, this time diving deep into the mental side of archery. From battling target panic and turning Spiderman’s head into a bullseye, to learning how self-talk, focus, and suppressed rage can actually shape your shot, this episode is full of honesty, laughs, and unexpected lessons. Whether you’re an archer looking to sharpen your mindset, or just curious about how this sport becomes a journey of mindfulness, frustration, and self-discovery, join us as we unravel why archery is never just about hitting the target – it can also be about hitting reset on yourself. We’d love your feedback, your questions, and your archery stories as we shape where the podcast goes from here. Update: Postponement and Plans
After a break to catch her breath and juggle life (new job, too many commitments, and a cold), Roberta wanted to pop in with an honest update. The podcast isn’t going anywhere, just evolving. Roberta shares what’s been going on behind the scenes, why she had to step back, and what’s coming up next. From practicing at home and setting up DIY ranges, to bow anatomy, burnout, competitions, and even experimenting with left-handed shooting there’s plenty ahead. We’d love your feedback, your questions, and your archery stories as we shape where the podcast goes from here. Don't Let The Intro Fool You! - A Chat With Michèle
Michèle Castiaux joins Roberta for a conversation about how she stumbled into archery, what keeps her coming back, and why sustainability is at the heart of everything she does, even when it comes to making her own arrows. From coaching and family weekends in the woods to longbows, lost arrows, and eco-conscious decisions, this chat explores how archery can be, amongst a lot of things, surprisingly environmental. Some sustainability ideas and tips for clubs: Every club is different — focus on what works for your community. Keep returning to reduce, reuse, recycle — with an emphasis on reduce (waste, consumption, excess gear). Ask where your club could do better: Avoiding litter Reducing waste Conserving energy & water Promoting sustainable transport Protecting biodiversity Stick to Leave No Trace principles wherever possible. Before buying new items, consider the entire life cycle: How and where was it made? What’s its environmental and social impact? Will it last? Can it be reused or recycled? Club members can get their own clothing embroidered instead of buying new, club ones. Avoid polyester — it sheds microplastics in wash water. Take care of equipment to avoid frequent replacements. Support local businesses and avoid harmful suppliers where possible. Stay in by the wall and mind the arrows! Contact us: [email protected] or on BlueSky at archerynotanarchy.bsky.social

If You’re Not Talking About It, You Should Be - Colleen Moore Interview (Part Two)
In this second part of our interview with Colleen Moore, we dive into the real, often unspoken challenges women face in archery, from managing periods on the course to coping with menopause, dodgy toilet access, and the occasional cold sweat mid-shot. Colleen brings straight talk, wit, and decades of life experience to the table, making space for honest chats about female health, respect between coaches, and how we can support women (young and old) to stay in the sport. From Horsebow to Coaching Rows – Colleen Moore Interview (Part One)
In this first episode of a two part interview, Roberta sits down with the brilliantly frank and fierce Colleen Moore (Level 4 coach). A devoted archer and all-round straight shooter, Colleen talks through her late start in archery, the stubborn refusal to conform, and the determination that kept her going when others would’ve walked away. From horsebow to coaching, and the joy of lightbulb moments to the real challenges women still face in the sport, Colleen shares the grit, laughs, and raw honesty behind her journey. The period pack information mentioned is available on the IFAF site via this link https://fieldarchery.ie/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/IFAF-Period-Pack-Info-Sheet.pdf IFAA Site: https://www.ifaa-archery.org/women-in-ifaa/ IFAF site: https://fieldarchery.ie/ Stay in by the wall and mind the bloody arrows! How to Prep for Your First Outdoor Shoot — No ‘Endeavours’ Required
Ever wondered what archery and a bit of healthy chaos have in common? In this episode, Roberta and Owen dive into everything a beginner needs to know before stepping onto the competition field. From waxing your string to why you really don’t need to bring a compass. Plus, a brief near-death experience involving a candle and a cup of tea. Expect personal stories, coughing, and plenty of practical advice, including what to pack (and what not to), navigating the IFAC/IFAA registration process, and whether popping a squat in the woods is a legitimate part of the sport (spoiler: it kind of is). Oh, and someone might’ve set a record… sort of. Whether you’re gearing up for your first shoot or just love the culture of the sport, this episode covers it all. Topics Include: Registration, gear checks & bow speed limits First-time nerves and what to expect Dress codes, carbon arrows, and controversial trousers Realistic kit lists vs. “pack-donkey” tendencies Community support & informal buddy systems And yes… etiquette for emergencies in the woods Let us know your feedback on Podbean, Spotify or YouTube. A Good Time to Begin - David's Story
This week, David joins Owen for a calm and reflective conversation about discovering archery later in life and the quiet rewards it brings. What began as a passing interest soon became a valued part of his routine, offering focus, structure and a growing sense of community. David shares his journey from beginner nerves to confidently shooting a traditional one-piece bow, and reflects on the appeal of simplicity, the challenge of consistency and the steady satisfaction of learning something new at your own pace. We explore the mental and physical benefits of the sport, the importance of showing up, and why progress often looks like turning up and trying again. A warm, grounded chat about archery, presence and making space for something that is entirely your own.

Reflecting with Roberta - Part 2
We return for the second part of this two-part episode with more honest and unfiltered reflections on Roberta's journey through archery thus far. From awkward anchor points to unexpected breakthroughs, we continue the conversation about physical setbacks, mental focus and what it really means to chase consistency in a sport that refuses perfection. With humour, sharp insight and a healthy dose of sarcasm, we talk about competitions, coping with pain, and the importance of leaving things in the hall, both literally and mentally. It is a thoughtful, down to earth chat about archery, ADD, and finding your place in a community that lets you just be. No trophies needed, just turn up, take part and maybe shoot a balloon or two. Apologies about the sound quality; some things need tweaking it seems.

Reflecting with Roberta - Part 1
In this episode, Owen takes the interviewer mic and Roberta takes centre stage. We’re looking back on nearly a year of archery, chats and general chaos, and digging into what keeps people coming back week after week. It’s not just about hitting the gold, it’s about headspace, routine, and remembering who you are outside of the school runs and day job. Roberta opens up about what archery has done for her; not just the technique or the tight groupings, but the identity, the structure, the sanity. We chat about motherhood, mindset, and what it means to be Roberta the Archer instead of just someone’s mom. There’s laughter, honesty, and more than a few moments that’ll hit home for anyone who’s ever tried to reclaim a piece of themselves. Join us for the start of something real. And if any of it resonates, we’d love to hear from you.

Another Topic Not Stuck To!
We’re back with another episode where absolutely nothing is planned but everything somehow comes together. This week, there is a bit of chat about Roberta’s new bow (christened “Bain”), the joys and disasters of string making, archery safety, Metallica dreams, and losing arrows in the woods. One of us did the homework, the other… well, sure look. Come for the random conversation, stay for the archery tips, and maybe learn a thing or two about what not to do with a riser, a quiver, or your anchor point. Every single arrow is like starting from scratch, after all.

Veronica’s Vector
In this episode, Roberta chats with Veronica, an archer, coach, and all-around warrior spirit, to explore how archery became more than just a hobby - it became a lifeline. From the thrill of her first shot to the moments of doubt, burnout, and rediscovery, Veronica shares how archery has helped her grow in patience, confidence, and mental resilience. We talk about the unseen emotional and physical challenges women face in sports, the power of community, and how archery offers a space for healing, empowerment, and self-expression, especially for neurodiverse individuals. Veronica’s story is one of transformation, strength, and staying true to yourself, one arrow at a time.

Breaking Down Archery Styles
In this technical episode, we dive into the world of archery styles, from Olympic recurve to 3D animal rounds, field formats, and the simple beauty of traditional wooden bows. Owen breaks down every major format: indoor vs. outdoor, target vs. field, 3D rounds, and the nuanced differences between traditional, barebow, recurve, and compound setups, while Robbie tries not to have a breakdown. We talk competition formats, common beginner mistakes, and why some archers would rather shoot a foam boar in the woods than hit a bullseye indoors. We also explore the philosophy behind archery styles, the challenges of tuning gear, and why your form matters more than your bow brand. Whatever your interest, this one’s packed with insights, opinions, and a healthy reminder: don’t be a dick!

Getting Started!
We’re chatting all things getting started from the buzz of your first shot to the joys of perfecting your own bow until it feels just right. We’re talking beginner blunders, dodgy footwork, eye dominance, and the magic of just getting out there and giving it a lash. How archery is for everyone, regardless of age or physical abilities. You don’t need to be built like a tank, just have a bit of curiosity and the will to stick with it. We also address how Artur stole Robbie's quiver and his future in the club.
