Stop Doing Invisible Labor Without Being Called Needy or Greedy

Invisible labor is everywhere—at work, at home, and especially in high-achieving environments. It’s the extra effort no one assigns but everyone expects. The problem? The moment you stop doing it, the narrative shifts. Suddenly you’re “difficult,” “needy,” or “not a team player.” If you’ve ever felt trapped in a cycle of overgiving, this conversation will help you step out of it—strategically. – The psychological and social backlash when you stop overgiving – How behavioral patterns reinforce these expectations – Practical ways to set boundaries without damaging your reputation   There is a difference between feeling wanted and being valued. Your own behavioral patterns, often an attempt to seem easy to get along with or agreeable set you up to reinforce extra expectations for work that goes unrewarded. Illuminate the invisible: List everything you do behind the scenes that keeps things running smoothly. Share the time it takes and the way it positively impacts outcomes. Focus on delegating the whole task, including the invisible parts of it so others appreciate the true effort involved. Set boundaries - you are not responsible for dragging others across the finish line or for compliance with warped definitions of leadership or psychological safety. Wanting credit for what you do is not presumptuous. Deserved elevation of your authority or title signals that you and your work are taken seriously. 💡Give Architecting a Google review- be sure to name the episode! https://g.page/r/CVYGVmEtsUjdEAI/review Stay Inspired, Angela Join the architecting community: YouTube, Instagram,  LinkedIn, Clubhouse, Facebook Interested in sponsoring a show or having me as a guest on your podcast or community? The Cost of Complacency: Interview with Yartiza Baez

Feeling more done than an overcooked steak? Being burned out and exhausted happens when the work you're doing isn't feeling purposeful to you. So why do you keep doing it? My guest Yaritza Baez is an entrepreneurship coach who helps you unlock the courage to get out of your comfort zone and design the life (and career) you're meant to have. We often hold ourselves back out of fear of losing things we think bring us security. Being complacent in your comfort zone keeps you stuck When you really unpack the idea that you don't have time to get clarity and lay the foundations for your next step, it's usually about having the courage to take the next step. Once you find your purpose, the risk will be worth it Your success isn't really credible unless there are a few failures behind it to prove you really understand what works and why. Weaponized Incompetence: The Silent Career Assasin

You stayed late again. You fixed the thing no one else could figure out. You stepped in because it was “just easier if you handled it.” At work, this dynamic has a predictable outcome: The most capable person becomes the default problem solver, emotional buffer, and extra pair of hands. In this episode, you'll learn how to spot weaponized incompetence in your team and yourself and how to overcome it. Common causes: Fear of failure- you assume that you’re supposed to know how to do something and instead of asking for help try to avoid being asked to do it at all (a growth mindset problem) Perfectionism – You think you have to have hit certain achievement milestones to be ready. You keep putting your success in the future Fear of success – if you take this on and do well at it will it lead to more assignments like this- you don’t want to get pigeonholed for doing a task you don’t love or suddenly find yourself overwhelmed with work or seen as the person who can be dumped on last minute (a boundary problem) Procrastination – this is the “lazy” or inertia trap. You hide behind being too busy to avoid having to take any real career risk Passive Aggressive acting out- you disagree with the assignment and don’t want to do it, but don’t want to take a stand either. The Fix Catch when someone or yourself is using some version of “I don’t know how” to avoid doing something. If they say I don’t know but I’m willing to learn, that’s one thing, but if they have no interest in moving towards competence, that’s the red flag. Have a conversation about what specifically the person doesn’t know how to do or feel comfortable doing.  Discuss a plan for them to get the training or resources they need. Can they work with someone the first few times etc. Create psychological safety- do everything you can to minimize uncertainty Get the Perfectionism Trap: https://architectingpodcast.com/index.php/perfectionismtrap/   💡Give Architecting a Google review- be sure to name the episode! https://g.page/r/CVYGVmEtsUjdEAI/review Stay Inspired, Angela Join the architecting community: YouTube, Instagram,  LinkedIn, Clubhouse, Facebook Interested in sponsoring a show or having me as a guest on your podcast or community? Cost of Culture: Women in Construction Week interview with Hacia Atherton

The AEC industry is overdue for an upgrade. My guest Hacia Atherton explains why continuing to operate on a model rooted in the industrial revolution is undermining our firms, our culture, and our value — especially for women. Learn what it's really costing to operate inside a system that was never designed for the complexity of today’s work. Effective leaders know that everyone at every experience level has value to add. They also know that they don't know everything We need to switch from a competitive model to a co-creative model where every stakeholder has a role in informing and improving culture and process. Most DEI programs get is wrong by not focusing on the pillars of psychological well being are autonomy, confidence and sense of belonging. Every interaction should be seen as a value exchange where the power dynamics are level. Reframe failures to find the growth opportunity. Trying to prove yourself or perform only erodes trust and authenticity When a firm is clear on its values, you can have a different conversation with clients about your worth. AI and Your Cognitive Burden: Interview with Peter Swimm

Your workday is filled with mundane tasks that drain your time and energy. Plus, doing less than top of license work is hardly a great financial strategy. But is AI really the solution? My guest Peter Swimm of Toilville gives you the lowdown on why open AI is just a time suck rife with hallucinations. Listen in to learn how a bespoke conversational AI system will solve your unique problems better and  relieve your cognitive burden in the process. If your AI platform isn't aligned with your process it's not going to produce much that's reliable or of value. Since AI is predictive based on the process it is designed for, anything that deviates will lead to hallucinations. That's why creative firms whose processes are more complex and have more variables need a customized model. Don't abdicate your responsibilities to AI, use it as a tool to accomplish repetitive, low skill tasks based on the process you define.  More software never makes people more productive, simplify instead of over-complicating. The questions you ask determine the solutions available to you. Effective problem solving and design requires a true understanding of the client's pain points. These "desire lines" can be overlooked when solutions are generated too quickly and an error was made in the early stages of the process. Environmental Burnout Triggers that Exhaust Your Nervous System: Interview with Garrett Wood

Most people think they're burned out because of what they have to do. They're missing a huge contributor when they don't also look at where they do it. In this episode, Garrett Wood shares neuroscience based insights on how the built environment can impact productivity, executive function, cognitive presence and energy levels.  The world is biased towards a sensory setpoint that was deemed "normal." Unfortunately, most people don't match this setpoint. An environment filled with sensory micro-stressors adds an extra stress load. Spaces that overwhelm even one sense can fragment your attention and generally require you to give more effort than the task should require. Environmental sensitivity is not an introvert/extrovert thing. We often give energetic pushes to meet a deadline but fail to give ourselves recovery time making the workplace ground zero for stress and burnout. A sign of burnout is going into energy conservation mode where we can't seem to resist things like binge watching or doom scrolling because our brain needs a break. A Somatic Approach to Life, Work and Purpose: Interview with Owen Marcus

It might sound crazy, but thinking and strategizing are often not the best ways to solve problems, make life decisions, connect with others or navigate the workplace. My guest Owen Marcus is a noted psychologist whose work applies the science of somatics to combat stress and the resulting dissociation with our body. Listen in to learn more about how to develop healthier life patterns, unlock your productivity and be better guided by your intuition to the choices that are best for you. The dissociation or stress becomes a default setting over time, making us feel more and more isolated from the people in our lives. Developing connection and quality relationships relies on establishing clear goals, boundaries and giving yourself agency. We are all intuitive, but have stopped listening to the somatic signals it give us. Addictions can arise from a lack of healthy connectivity Toxic masculinity and a culture of codependency in the workplace has had negative impacts for men and women. Communicating and connecting better can over come this and lead to higher performing teams. Gatekept: Why Architects Feel “Too Much,” “Not Enough,” and Still Stuck

You can't make career power moves if you give all your power to others. Gatekeepers who will mirror you inner doubts and tell you exactly why you are both too much and not enough to get that next big opportunity. It's time to shine the light on the sneaky ways they get away with it and start moving towards the career you know you were meant to have. Gatekeeping- the attempt to control who gets access to resources and opportunities is the ultimate power play - if you allow other people to define you. No one can play on insecurities you don't have. Get clear on what you want, know that you deserve it even if you have to work to get all the qualifications, and give yourself permission to take action toward achieving it. Make a plan with a clear timeline and communicate it to others so expectations are aligned. Make your own opportunities instead of waiting for ones to be given to you at your current job. Leverage professional organizations and your network to proactively get the skills and experience you need. Don't make assumptions. ask for explanations. Have the hard talks about what you want, why you want it and what you need to do to get it.   Gatekeeping red flags: bad fit, toxic behavior, moving the goalposts, vague criticism that doesn't match the facts. Workplace Conflict and Competition Handled: Interview with Dan Tocchini

Meeting resistance (from others and within ourselves) with curiosity is your career superpower. My guest Dan Tocchini deep dives into what resistance is really telling you and how to leverage it to build teams that produce creative solutions. Every interaction is a design challenge to create psychological safety - get to the why with each team member. We are hardwired with two mandates: stay alive and conserve energy. This is translated to us as looking good, feeling good, being right and staying in control. When we don't have any of these factors, we go into resistance. Criticism, contempt, stonewalling or defensiveness are the ways we protect ourselves from perceived threats. Envy and competition show up when an individual feels threatened by th excellence of others. Creativity is about having an opinion. Design is about refining your field of options. All new possibility presents itself as a threat at first, so you have to release attachment to those opinions. Preparing others to lead and succession planning are signs of a healthy work culture where excellence is celebrated not feared. Career Strategy for Constant Change: Interview with Jillian Reilly

Newsflash: predictable structures are collapsing. The old if/then models don't work, especially around your career path. Jillian Reilly, author of The Ten Permissions shares her research and insights on how to be come mentally fit to navigate a world where change and unpredictability are the new normal.  We all have conscious and unconscious limits around what we feel we are allowed to do or be. Navigating change begins with giving yourself permission to go beyond what you view as your limits. The old paradigm of "the way" which comes from a fixed and predictable structures has fallen. To be successful in today's fluid world, you need to get clear on what is "your way." Once you know what you want, you have to go out and create it. They Said No: Drew Ann Long on why she did it anyway

You know what’s right. But what do you do when every gatekeeper says no? In this episode, Drew Ann Long, inventor of Caroline’s Cart, shares the story of refusing to let a necessary idea die. Her vision was simple—and radical: a shopping cart that makes the retail experience accessible for people with disabilities and mobility challenges. The industry pushed back. Manufacturers said no. Retailers avoided the conversation. Funding didn’t show up. So she invested personally and kept advocating for a need others wouldn’t acknowledge, and stayed the course anyway. Despite the special needs community being the world's largest minority group, products designed for their needs are lacking. This creates a barrier to access not only for them but for their families and caregivers. By introducing more inclusive products like Caroline's Cart, the world was opened for those with mobility challenges, autism and dementia. Success means believing in your cause and taking risks to make it happen no mater what. When the establishment tells you no, cultivate support in the community you want to serve. Innovation happens when you focus on the solution not the problem. Professional development is any way you are improving, whether that is technical competency or soft skills. Popcorn Brain Detox: Why IRL Time Matters for Work Life Balance

IRL > URL every time. Living in a digital world  designed to reward our "engagement" has led to a reduction in attention span, memory and concentration. If you're feeling  anxious, disinterested, restless and mentally exhausted, it's a symptom of popcorn brain. Time to stop doom scrolling and make the changes I discuss in this episode. In our "always on" digitally forward world, devices endlessly interrupt us with notifications triggering the reward systems in our brain and conditioning us to feel an urgent need to respond. Despite having access to an infinite amount of data, algorithms have narrowed our awareness and placed us in echo chambers that only affirm what we already know or worry about. Technology didn't give us more free time, it led to us taking on more work. Attention fatigue sets in when our mental resources are drained by constant interruptions. This makes us less available for tasks that require focused attention and more prone to rote activities that keep us engaged but not challenged - I'm looking at you doom scroller! Stop the pop by taking a digital detox, turning of notifications and prioritizing physical tasks. Doing IRL activities mindfully and engaging all five senses will help restore attention and focus. Sustained Presence: Interview with Roderic Walton

The hardest things to talk about are often the ones that most need our commitment. In this episode, we dive into one of architecture’s toughest (and most overdue) topics: how to make the profession more transparent, inclusive, and accessible. My guest, Roderic Walton, is on a mission to demystify what architects actually do—and to build a community where open discussion replaces gatekeeping. Through his YouTube channel, he’s redefining how we talk about architecture, who gets to be part of it, and how to create a career that truly makes an impact. If you’ve ever questioned your place in the profession—or wanted to change it for the better—this conversation is for you.  It takes time to forge a career path but what makes your career is the changes you can make for others through your work. Hearing and giving voice to a broader community makes your work more relevant and impactful. Overcoming negativity and setbacks comes from clarity around why your work is important. Part of why our profession isn't getting more diverse is that we don;t have diverse design processes. Watch the R.K.W. Designing With—Not For: How Peer Support is Revolutionizing Behavioral Health Spaces Interview with Sydney Harris and Parker LaCombe

It’s easy to forget who we’re really designing for—especially in behavioral health, where the stakes are high and the people we serve are too often left out of the process. In this episode, Parker LaCombe and Sydney Harris of Mind Care Connect reveal how co-design that engages those with lived experience is rewriting the rules of behavioral health architecture. Co-design isn’t just a process—it’s a mindset shift. When architects design with people, not for them, we build dignity, community, and true healing into the spaces that need it most. Design can either amplify power dynamics or become an equalizer. Including people with lived experience prevents assumptions and creates more balanced, empathetic spaces. Co-design is a feedback loop, not a one-time input. Maintaining communication ensures participants know how their voices shaped the outcome—even when every request can’t be met. Designing for recovery is important in behavioral health spaces. This means providing connection and community where someone feels safe to be vulnerable. It isn't about designing for compliance.  Work with Mind Care Connect: https://www.mindcareconnect.org Contact Parker: https://www.linkedin.com/in/parker-lacombe/ Contact Sydney: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sydney-h-6a3a3a61/ 💡Give Architecting a Google review- be sure to name the episode! https://g.page/r/CVYGVmEtsUjdEAI/review Stay Inspired, Angela Join the architecting community: YouTube, Instagram,  LinkedIn, Clubhouse, Facebook Interested in sponsoring a show or having me as a guest on your podcast or community? You Didn’t Fail: Why Career Setbacks Are the Real Launchpad

What if the setback you’re cursing right now is the exact detour you needed? In this episode of Architecting, I flip the script on failure. When the universe pulls the rug out, it’s not rejection—it’s redirection. Learn how to take the opportunity to rebrand, define success on your own terms, and stop tolerating what never served you. This is your permission slip to rethink what you’ve been settling for and reclaim your career as something that actually fits. What you thought you wanted might not be aligned with your actually purpose, which may be what's blocking you from making the moves that would bring it in.  Look for the "something better." Sometimes we need the experience of what we don't like or want to better understand what we do. Look for hidden takeaways from setbacks such as soft skills gained, or experience in areas that might seem like they are tangential to your main job.  Look retrospectively for how these things differentiate you in a way that showcases your authentic self. Opportunity is a Verb: Interview with Caitlin Brady

If you don’t ask, the answer’s always no. If you don’t knock, the door never opens. Opportunity doesn’t wait around—it rewards bold action. In part two of a special "double feature" podcast episode, you'll hear from Caitlin Brady, creator of the Architectette podcast (where part one lives) about chasing the chances that can change everything. We talk about what it really means to pursue opportunity—not as luck or timing, but as a habit. The magic isn’t in the wins alone; it’s in the courage to keep showing up, asking, and learning from every move you make. Build real relationships instead of transactional ones. Don't just work with people, take the time to get to know them and learn from them. Always ask, but don't get attached to the outcome. What's meant for you will find you if you keep taking action. Then, picking up where part one left off (at 19:50), we get real about leadership as the antidote to systemic codependency in the AEC industry: Respect boundaries—yours and your team’s. Set expectations that empower, not deplete. Refuse to normalize burnout or abuse. Give agency, celebrate wins, and build momentum through trust. The Architect's Vanishing Influence: Interview with Beau Dromiack

When we say being an architect is magic, it's not because we want to disappear. Yet our profession is slowly losing its influence. Worse, it's an inside job. My guest, architect Beau Dromiack, calls it like it is. He exposes how the profession traded influence for efficiency, and why surrendering our accountability and craft has left us sidelined. More importantly, he shows us how to take it back. Architecture is hard because we constantly have to adapt to completely new constraints. Our descisions have impact for decades beyond the design time frame. We need to stop trading craft for efficiency. The profession loses influence when it gives up accountability and responsibility. To reintegrate our fractured practice, we need to refocus on what architects uniquely offer: value, skill and optimism The future of architecture depends on whether we stop playing small and start owning our influence again. Introverts are empathetic and passionate people. You care about the people and causes they resonate with and commit to them unflinchingly. Because introverts expend energy from interacting with others, you selectively invest it in alignment with your passions. Earth Day 2025: Practice Models for Public Health Interview with Molly Scanlon

What's considered sustainable from a public health perspective? Not necessarily the same things that we might otherwise uphold. We celebrate the 2025 Earth Day theme of Our Power, Our Planet with architect and integrative environmental specialist Molly Scanlon who shares insights on a new model for architecture practice. Adjacent industries hold the key to practice innovation. Seeing the issues through another point of view moves us past the constraints of business as usual. Advocacy requires having a flexible perspective and taking initiative to build your expertise and avenues of impact Things don't change unless you do. Buildings can become a non-pharmacological intervention in the world of public health as we add additional research related to safety and sustainability. Architects can provide a holistic vs. a traditionally component based understanding common in public health. Pick the right opportunities and keep your schedule open so you have the time and energy to get involved with what matters to you. Loyal too Long? How sunk cost fallacy impacts your career

When are determination, loyalty, persistence not virtues? When you're deploying them in a no-win situation. There are more landmines like this than you might think in your career landscape.  In today's episode, you'll learn how behavioral economics is keeping you stuck in situations that are aging like milk. Know when having grit is worth the payoff and when it's wasting your time. The more time, money or effort you invest, the more you feel responsible for achieving  success, and the less likely you are to abandon what's not working. When you feel like you should keep trying, also consider the cost of a missed opportunity. What didn’t you do, explore, discover because you’re pouring resources down the drain? What did you put at risk in terms of your stress level? Your health, your well being? Make sure that your expectations are realistic and clearly communicated Don't get so emotionally invested that you can't walk away. Think about milestones and success measures and have a plan for what happens if they aren't met. Ask "what's the best that could happen?" Then decide if that answer is good enough. Urban Healthonomics: Martin Prince-Parrott Talks with Architects as Healers: Buildings as Medicine.

You'll learn practical strategies to build for health, well being and economic vitality. The economics of sustainable healthy cities in an interconnected web of downstream (consumer) and upstream (policies/incentives). Look at change from multiple viewpoints: citizen, architect, engineer, developer, policy maker, stakeolder There are tangential economic impacts to poor air quality urban heat islands, water pollution, and social isolation. Addressing them requires forging uncommon public and private partnerships. Cities are multi-generational Preventing despair is our imperative. In hope, we believe solutions are possible and work towards them. An Ecosystem for Design Innovation: Interview with Noam Platt

The story of non-profit MakeGood was forged in architect Noam Platt's desire to help people with disabilities. Whether you also have a passion for assistive technology or some other cause lights you up, you don't have to wait for a project to have an impact. Learn why he thinks architects are uniquely qualified (and called) to lead positive change in the community and how to get started. Assistive technology is an emerging field that needs the creative thinking and problem solving skills of architects and designers. Finding areas like this and lending your expertise to them can have a lasting impact on your community. When you advocate and for something that helps people, you're not worried about asking for help or support. Embarrassment or making mistakes pale in comparison to getting something accomplished. You can't unsee problems especially if you know you have the ability to help solve them. One hour of your expert time is worth more than 20 hours of a non-experts time. Start by volunteering and building your network. The experience you get volunteering is experience you won't get working at a firm. That experience can be brought back to better inform projects at your firm.
