Art in Australia, No. 2, 1917

In 1916, three pivotal figures of Sydneys art scene—Sydney Ure Smith, Bertram Stevens, and Charles Lloyd Jones—came together to launch Australias inaugural art magazine. Their vision was to celebrate the immense talent of Australian artists and make their works accessible to a wider audience, even offering high-quality reproductions for those unable to view the originals. All 102 issues of Art in Australia, published from 1916 to 1942, are now available online at the National Library of Australias Trove website. The second issue presents captivating biographical sketches of prominent contemporary Australian artists, including the likes of Charles Conder, Arthur Streeton, and Hans Heysen, each beautifully illustrated with examples of their remarkable works.
