What is the risk of riding a bike downhill at 60mph/100kph and, more importantly, are you willing to take that risk? That's the first question. The second question is what is the perceived risk of that same descent? Athletes Over 70 #19 – Smashing Records at 70

This podcast was originally published on Sports Will Save Us All, the wildly popular human interest Sports Podcast based in Arizona and hosted by Sasha Graham. In 2023, elite cyclist Jeff Seckendorf came on the show to share his quest to break the national velodrome hour record in the 70-74 age group. His goal was set, his training dialed, his eye was on the prize. But as so often happens in sports, and in life, deep into training he came to a staggering realization that lead to a massive pivot that you have to hear to believe. If you're interested in learning more about Jeff's original goal, listen to his first visit to the show in an episode that was re-released on August 10, 2025.Jeff completed his ride in support of Parkinson's Association of San Diego. Athletes Over 70 #18 – The Massive Quest To Break The Velodrome Hour Record at Age 70

This podcast was originally published on Sasha Graham's Sports Will Save Us All podcast channel.Jeff Seckendorf doesn't seem to have met a lot of sports where he didn't excel. His experiences range from land (ice climbing) to sea (scuba diving) to air (aerobatic flying) and have culminated in his current passion, the velodrome, where he rides his fixed gear, brake-less bike really, really fast. Jeff currently holds the hour record at the San Diego Velodrome and is now training for an attempt at breaking the national hour record in the 70-74 age group in 2025. In this episode he explains the appeal of this brutal race, how he stays motivated day in and day out, and how to find the fun in the every day. Athletes Over 70 #17 – Working with Older Athletes with Coach Tracey Jacobs

This episode was originally recorded for the Parkinson's Association of San Diego Podcast series. When we conceived the topic for this microcast the idea was to talk about the differences for a coach working wth older athletes and younger athletes, or older people with Parkinson's who have to exercise and younger people, with or without Parkinson's, who want to exercise. However, as the conversation developed, the apparent differences became less and less obvious. Join Coach Tracey Jacobs, a cyclist having won world and national championships, and Jeff Seckendorf, age 70, coach and world record holder on the bike and Director of Operations at the Parkinson's Association of San Diego, as they unpack this seemingly simple topic. For more information on Coach Tracey, click here: https://traceyjacobscoaching.com/For Coach Me Strong, click here: https://coachmestrong.com/The Strength and Movement Alliance is a  non-profit organization providing financial assistance, scholarships, and support for exercise, wellness, and disease-management programs for individuals in need. For the Strength and Movement Alliance, click here: https://strengthandmovementalliance.org/

Athletes Over 70 #12 – Sasha Graham on the Athlete's Mindset

Back in 2020, as the Covid pandemic began, a few of us got together and started a company called Coach Me Strong, an individualized exercise coaching program for people with Parkinson's. One of the first things we said to anyone who called to learn more about Coach Me Strong was, "No matter what you previous career was, now that you are diagnosed with Parkinson's your new career is as a professional athlete."This was not meant to be off-putting but rather to impress that, with Parkinson's, exercise is not an option...the same as with any professional athlete. In this episode Sasha Graham, host of the podcast, Sports Will Save Us All, joins us to reflect on the hundreds of interviews she has done with professional and amateur athletes and coaches about the professional athlete's mindset.Check out her show, Sports Will Save Us AllAnd check out Coach Me Strong

Athletes Over 70 #6 – Managing the Frustration of Setbacks

Setback happen. This is true for everything we are learning, particularly when moving to a higher level in any field. In scuba training, in Unified Team Diving, we have a thing called the "ebay dive." This is when you come out of the water after such a frustrating dive that you want to put all your gear on ebay, sell it, and take up another sport. How we deal with the frustration of setbacks in scuba also informs how we deal with setbacks in life. In this short carcast, Jeff takes a look at the frustrations surrounding a setback and talks about how he deals with the days when everything goes sideways. For more information and to contact Jeff, click here. The Strength and Movement Alliance is a  non-profit organization providing financial assistance, scholarships, and support for exercise, wellness, and disease-management programs for individuals in need. For the Strength and Movement Alliance, click here: https://strengthandmovementalliance.org/This was originally published as UTD Scuba Diving Podcast Episode #81.

Athletes Over 70 #3 – Comparing Yourself to Others

Do you feel like you are good enough? That is the core of this episode. In diving, and in sports, we are constantly comparing ourselves to others and that can be a huge impediment to any successful outcome in a class or training program. The most important thing in any training situation, or in a competition, is simple: you do you.As usual, I tie diving to cycling. Regardless of whether these stories are about you, let us know if you need some guidance, some coaching, or some mentoring as you move though your career as the best scuba diving version of you.JeffFor more information and to contact Jeff, click here. The Strength and Movement Alliance is a  non-profit organization providing financial assistance, scholarships, and support for exercise, wellness, and disease-management programs for individuals in need. For the Strength and Movement Alliance, click here: https://strengthandmovementalliance.org/This was originally published as UTD Scuba Diving Podcast Episode #107

Athletes Over 70 #2 – Fulfilling Unfulfilled Dreams

In the late 1970's or early 1980's I had an opportunity to take on something that looked really cool to me but my situation at the time blocked it. I've kept that dream alive until this past weekend when I fulfilled an unfulfilled dream. What are your unfulfilled dreams? What are you missed opportunities – in scuba or in life? Do you have the chance to close the loop now? In this short episode I look at how I completed something I started almost 50 years ago.
