Making the desert bloom — and creating jobs, too

Israel's Negev communities have long struggled to grow economically and socially. But gradually, that's been changing -- thanks in part to the Jewish National Fund's Negev Vision development initiatives. The JNF helped bring together 25 mayors of Jewish and Arab communities to work to promote economic growth and develop education in the area.  The NGO's latest effort has been in the direction of job creation, and it comes in the form of the Ronald Lauder Employment Center.  Through its initiatives in the Negev, the JNF has made life more livable for thousands of residents - Jewish and Arab, Israeli-born and immigrants. And as the organization's work expands, the positive social and economic impact may be felt throughout the country.

4 hostages, 3 terrorists killed in France

Four people are dead after they were taken hostage in a kosher supermarket in Paris this afternoon. Police raided the supermarket this evening, freeing 15 hostages and killing one of the hostage takers, Amedy Coulibaly. At the time of this report, it is unclear whether the second hostage-taker Hayat Boumedienne, was arrested or whether she remains at large.   French police officials reported that the two attackers had close ties with the terrorists who attacked the headquarters of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday. The perpetrators of that attack were brothers Cherif Kouachi and Said Kouachi. They killed 12 people and then fled, hijacking getaway cars, until they finally took one hostage and holed up in a print factory outside Paris. A standoff with police ensued and it was during this standoff that Coulibaly and Boumedienne attacked the kosher supermarket.   Police raided the print factory and the supermarket simultaneously. The Kouachis were both killed in a shootout. But earlier, during the standoff, they told French TV that they were ordered by Al Qaeda in Yemen to attack Charlie Hebdo. The Kouachis were both already known to French and American counterterrorism authorities. They were the French-born children of Algerian parents and were both on a no-fly list in the US. Cherif Kouachi had been imprisoned in France for attempting to recruit men to fight against American forces in Iraq.   Coulibaly, the supermarket attacker, told French television that he had coordinated with the Kouachis. He said that he chose to attack the kosher specifically because it was a Jewish place. Produced by Shoshi Shmuluvitz

Ben Aylon's musical voyage with Black Guru

Today on World Flight, Israeli multi-instrumentalist, Ben Aylon, introduces us to his musical journey through west Africa. Years back, Ben and his guitarist friend, Yair Hashachar, were traveling Gambia when they were accidentally arrested and thrown into prison. While there, they decided they should create a band, and a few days after their arrest they were deported to Senegal. Their unexpected arrival in Senegal changed their lives forever, as the country embraced them and became their main source of inspiration. Ben Aylon tells us about his story and also shares songs from Black Guru's latest album "Sun and Moon," a exquisite album recorded in both Senegal and Israel. Today, Ben is a close friend and a student of the legendary Sengalese percussionist, Doudou Ndiaye Rose, who is featured on the album. Think local: How to break foreign markets with Yossi Goldschmidt, CEO of Adama India

'Drivers' is an interview series with prominent Israeli business figures. The host, Erin Kopelow, is co-founder and director of business development for Tel Aviv University's Sofaer International MBA and a recent graduate of the Kellog-Recanati Executive MBA. Originally from Canada, Erin moved to Israel nine years ago and currently lives in Tel Aviv. In 2009, Yossi Goldschmidt boarded a plane tasked with founding the India branch of Makhteshim Agan (now Adama Agricultural Solutions). It was time for one of the global leaders in pesticide production to open its first Asia branch, but Goldschmidt wasn’t a believer in following the crowd: Rather than set up a wholesale business, Golschmidt targeted local retailers and even the farmers themselves to establish his brand - ground up. Today Goldschmidt is in charge of 530 local employees and a business worth $160 million. He talks to Drivers host Erin Kopelow about his personal take on breaking new markets and bridging cultural gaps.

    The OTHER Piano Festival

For the last few years, the Tel Aviv municipality has been holding an annual Piano Festival - a series of free or almost free concerts featuring some of the most popular Israeli musicians playing their songs on the piano. But THIS is not that festival. This is the Mizrahi Piano Festival. Mizrahi Jews are Middle Eastern in origin, Ashkenazi Jews are of European extraction. And you can see evidence of discrimination, or at least inequality, between Ashkenazim and Mizrahim in Israeli society. Like, for example, in the piano festival. This publicly funded festival has always omitted Mizrahi music from its line-up - despite the fact that it's one of the most popular genres in Israel. So, this year, Ophir Toubul and a few other Mizrahi activists decided to organize their own piano festival. What the Mizrahi Piano Festival shows is that there IS an audience for this music, and the culture is not low-brow or cheap. In fact, contemporary Mizrahi culture is the space where Middle Eastern and Western aesthetics combine to form something new, something different and authentically Israeli. The Bright Young Things of Tel Aviv

Florentin assails the senses. It is all color and noise, heat and decrepitude. The south Tel Aviv neighborhood is filled with furniture and lighting stores, bars and cafes, cheap plastic toy shops, and upscale boutiques. It’s a bundle of contradictions, which makes sense: it sits between the gentrified neighborhood of Neve Tzedek and the run-down Carmel Market area; between the sea and the grimy Levinsky spice market (you can imagine how it smells in the summer). Florentin is bursting with street art: almost every building on every narrow, bumpy road is spray-painted with eggplants by the artist EPK, bandaids by Dede, political graffiti calling for peace or veganism. If Tel Aviv leans left, Florentin does much more so; if Tel Aviv is young, Florentin’s even a bit younger; and if Tel Aviv accepts its artists, eccentrics, and the LGBT community, then Florentin is their haven. Its young, creative, often frenetic energy make it like “La Boheme” of Tel Aviv. Here are the stories of people who found their place in Florentin. Interviews: Guy Sharett - StreetWise Hebrew Eli Edri - co-owner, Under 1000 Gallery Sharon Pazner - artist Ilan Balabi - artisan Barak Eiluz - manager, Casbah Cafe Sigalit Salway Judd Yadid - writer Music: Ornette Coleman - Lonely Woman Ernest Ranglin and Avila - Bra Joe from Kilimanjaro Charles Mingus - Fables of Faubus Donald Byrd - Blind Man, Blind Man Miles Davis - Freddy Freeloader Donald Byrd - Bossa Donald Byrd - Street Lady The Quintet - A Night in Tunisia Bobbi Humphrey - Harlem River Drive Charles Mingus - Goodbye Porkpie Hat John Coltrane - While My Lady Sleeps Produced by Shoshi Shmuluvitz
