Autistic Strengths in Healthcare with David Burton
In this episode, I am joined by David Burton, Autism Liaison Practitioner, to explore the unique strengths that autistic individuals bring to healthcare settings and why these strengths are often overlooked. While the conversation focuses primarily on autistic experiences and strengths, it also encourages a broader appreciation of neurodivergent strengths as a whole, highlighting the value that diverse ways of thinking can bring to healthcare teams and patient care.Together, we discuss how neurodivergent professionals can enhance healthcare delivery, how we can move away from deficit-based perspectives, and why students and professionals should be recognised as assets whose unique skills, insights, and perspectives can enrich the workforce. We also explore how organisations can better identify, support, and celebrate neurodivergent talent.Disclaimer: The views and opinions expressed by David Burton in this episode are his own and are shared in a personal capacity. What does Neurodiversity mean within Healthcare?
Welcome to the very first episode of Beyond the Diagnosis: Neurodiversity in Healthcare.I am incredibly excited (and honestly so nervous!) to finally be sharing this podcast with you. This project has been something I have poured a lot of time, thought, and passion into, and putting it out into the world feels both daunting and rewarding. In this opening episode, we explore what neurodiversity means within healthcare and why it is such an important conversation to have. We discuss the neurodiversity paradigm, challenge some common misconceptions, and consider how healthcare education and practice can become more inclusive for neurodivergent students, professionals, and patients. As an autistic physiotherapy student, this topic is both professionally and personally important to me. Through this podcast, I hope to create open, honest, and supportive conversations that encourage greater understanding, awareness, and inclusion across healthcare.Thank you for listening, and I hope you'll join me for the rest of the series!LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ruby-mitchell-163b6a364/?lipi=urn%3Ali%3Apage%3Ad_flagship3_profile_view_base_contact_details%3Bay4PpUhcS06Ni9562CQxIQ%3D%3D
