S.5 E.25 Brittany Baker: In the Room: Surviving an AFE, Aneurysm, & the Miracle In Between

Today's episode I'm joined by Brittany Baker, mama of four work from home Mama, dear friend and the doula who supported me during the birth of my second daughter. What makes this conversation especially sacred and heavy is that Brittany was in the room when we experienced our amniotic fluid embolism. That alone carries layers of shared trauma and deep connection. In this episode, we talk about what it's like to have babies after witnessing an AFE, and how fear, faith and healing coexist; especially when her daughter Libby's birth was semi off-grid. Brittany also shares her own life-threatening story. Two years before having her daughter, Libby, she experienced an aneurysm on the main blood vessel to her spleen. Doctors later told her that if she had become pregnant before it was discovered, it could have cost both of their lives. This is a conversation about survival, God's protection, and the miracles.Brittany's InstagramBrittany's FacebookThe 1st Part of Brittany's First EpisodeThe 2nd Part of Brittany's First EpisodeCathy's Printify ShopCathy's WebsiteFollow Birth Trauma Stories on Instagram  Follow Birth Trauma Stories on FacebookFollow Birth Trauma Stories on YouTube

Today's episode is one I truly believe is God ordained. I'm joined by my dear AFE and stroke sister Liana Albers. Our friendship began with a simple post in the Facebook, AFE support group. I was searching for someone who understood life post-stroke, and God led Liana to respond. In this episode, she shares her testimony of survival, healing, and fighting back from the brink of death, including her journey through a post AFE pregnancy, and how God met her in the midst of fear and faith. S.5 E.21 Ashley Hernandez: The Birth I Didn’t Expect: A Story of Preeclampsia

Ashley Hernandez’s birth story is one of resilience and survival. After conceiving through IVF, she developed gestational hypertension that progressed to preeclampsia with severe features, putting both her and her baby at risk. She was also high-risk for preterm labor. Ultimately, she required a C-section, during which placenta accreta was discovered, leading to a partial hysterectomy. Her baby spent time in the NICU, adding another layer of challenge to her postpartum recovery.(I am not sure how, but this episode was released early. S.5 E. 9 Beth Mull: Be Brave: A Story of Surrendering in Child Loss

Being in the midst of suffering, heartbreak, and tragedy can be painstakingly lonely and the most desperate time of your life. You can be left questioning God, confused as to why He isn’t answering your prayers, and even downright angry with Him. Beth Mull, from our Raleigh, North Carolina community, experienced all of these emotions as she walked through the unraveling of her marriage and the terminal diagnosis of her baby daughter. But, as Beth recalls through her story, it was in those feelings of helplessness that she can clearly see the Father’s persistent pursuit of her heart through His unconditional love and redemptive power as He led her to His unique purpose for her life. Connect with BethLove LifeCathy's Printify ShopCathy's WebsiteFollow Birth Trauma Stories on Instagram  Follow Birth Trauma Stories on FacebookFollow Birth Trauma Stories on YouTube

S.5 E.7: Catherine Garrett: God Does Not Make Mistakes: Managing Survivor's Guilt

This week’s podcast episode is one I’ve avoided for a long time. Not because it wasn’t important. Not because I hadn’t thought about it. But because on some level, I think I’ve been avoiding survivor’s guilt altogether. Don’t get me wrong—I’ve absolutely wrestled with the question: Why did I survive, and Dez didn’t? If you’re not familiar with Dez’s story, she was a fellow mom who lived about an hour from me. Less than a year after my own amniotic fluid embolism, Dez experienced the same rare birth complication… and tragically, she didn’t survive. It shook me. For years, that tension sat quietly in my soul—unspoken, unresolved, but always present. Survivor’s guilt has layers. It’s complex. And yet, I know I’m not alone in this. So this week, I’m finally talking about it. Because the time is now. Because I want to serve this community honestly. And because I know for certain, I’m not the only one carrying this kind of grief with gratitude. In the episode, I explore what survivor’s guilt can feel like as a believer—how we reconcile the pain with the truth that God does not make mistakes. I pray it encourages your heart, wherever you are on the healing journey. Tune in to hear more. You are not alone. All the days ordained for me were written in your book...” (Psalm 139:16)Cathy's Printify ShopCathy's WebsiteFollow Birth Trauma Stories on Instagram  Follow Birth Trauma Stories on FacebookFollow Birth Trauma Stories on YouTube

S.5 E.2 Cristina Simmons: Powered by Perseverance

In this week's episode, I am joined by Cristina P. Simmons. She is a speaker, author, and trauma-informed wellness coach whose path to motherhood has been marked by unimaginable loss and deep resilience. After losing three biological children (Kaelynn, Kadyn & DJ) due to a rare genetic syndrome, Cristina and her husband were blessed to adopt three incredible children—twin girls (Dani & Dori) born on Christmas Day and a son (Juddsen) born just months after their final loss. Each child brought light into the darkness, though the road was anything but easy. Her daughters were exposed to substances in the womb, and her son was later diagnosed on the autism spectrum. While the journey has been filled with countless challenges, it has also been one of deep love, transformation, and faith. Cristina now uses her lived experiences to guide other women through grief, healing, and growth. Through her holistic approach that combines mindset, movement, and spiritual connection. She helps women break free from survival mode and step into strength, clarity, and confidence. S.4 E.26 Dr. Gargey Patil: An AFE Story: A Provider's Perspective

In this week's episode, I have an extra special guest: my OB/GYN, Dr. Garey Patil. Dr. Patil was one of the physicians present on the day of our Amniotic Fluid Embolism. He's been married to his wife, Sunita, for over 27 years, and they have two adult children. One son is a lawyer, and the younger son is studying to become a mechanical engineer at UCF.  They are an Indian family, and he's actually the only one who was born in India, but truthfully, they consider themselves 100% American, but they are respectful of their Indian culture, however, independently, they all came to Christ and are now Christ believers. S.4 E.17 Cathy Garrett: The 10 Percent: A Story of Meconium Aspiration Syndrome

In this week's episode, I dive into my mom's second birth story—her story of how she delivered twins and watched one twin fight for her life. She had a lovely pregnancy.  At 36 weeks, my mom's OB told her it was time to deliver. The doctors were concerned with my sister's weight as she was quite a bit smaller than I was; over 1 lb smaller! The doctors even discussed transferring my mom because of Christina's small size and weight. The cesarean was scheduled, and both the double cribs and my exhausted mom were ready!  The date was July 13, but things would quickly change. After pulling Christina out, I swallowed amniotic fluid. Unfortunately, it also had meconium in it. Shortly after birth, I struggled to breathe and was placed on oxygen. Within a day, I was transferred downtown to a bigger hospital. Remember the hospital that was mentioned earlier? Yes, the same hospital they discussed sending my mom to deliver because of Christina's weight. Eventually, I was breathing way too fast, was placed on a ventilator, and my lung collapsed. The situation was grim. Doctors told my parents that I had a ten percent chance of survival. Tune in to hear more about the first time amniotic fluid tried to kill me!
