This story is a violinist named Elke who is working on her concert performance for the end of the month. Elke and her brothers, Ross & Stanley, are still grieving the passing of their Papa. April Recap - Unanswered Questions
In this episode Matthew Hernandez dwells and grapples with previously read stories. What stood out about "The Man From Planet Earth" to "Battle Angel" and even more recent recent episodes, but mostly about Isabel Allende's 'An Act of Vengeance.' Though, I am trying to be open about whatever I feel about stories that may not have been the best story to become more open. Upon later thought I became more disgusted by 'An Act of Vengeance.' I don't know if I will make more episodes like this. It may be fun, but I just wanted to say maybe not to delete or redo a previous recording, but say a few a more thoughts about it. follow me: [email protected] https://discord.gg/36WxYB7T https://locals.com/bookstoread/feed

Fragility – When the House Isn’t the Answer
Join Matt Hernandez on ‘Book Chat With You’ as we unravel the quietly unsettling brilliance of Carol Shields’ short story, ‘Fragility.’ This isn't just a summary; it’s a deep dive into a story about grief, relationships, and the search for 'good vibrations’—even when those vibrations are shaky. Matt’s wonderfully self-deprecating commentary guides us through the story’s central figures: an unnamed narrator, his wife Ivy, and the enigmatic real estate agent, Margie Little. We unpack the story’s unusual perspective – Ivy’s keen observations as they assess potential homes, searching for a place to settle after the loss of their son, Christopher. What makes ‘Fragility’ so compelling? Matt’s frustration with Ivy's seemingly detached optimism, the shifting dynamics between the characters, and the subtle exploration of unresolved grief. He questions whether Ivy truly perceives the cracks in their relationship or simply desires a fresh start. This episode is a masterclass in quiet storytelling. Matt's reflections on Carol Shields’ writing style – her ability to create a relaxing reading experience – make this a perfect listen for anyone seeking a thought-provoking, yet comforting, literary exploration. Let us know what you think in the comments – are the "good vibrations" truly attainable, or are they just a comforting illusion? #BookChat #CarolShields #ShortStory #Literature #Podcast #bookreview follow me: [email protected] https://discord.gg/36WxYB7T https://locals.com/bookstoread/feed Learn more about the author and the book at: https://www.carol-shields.com/ https://bookshop.org/a/117636/9780060762049

Fly Paper - Poisoned or was it...
Today we’re diving headfirst into Dashiell Hammett’s Fly Paper , but this isn't just a recap. We’re dissecting how Hammett writes. His dialogue is a masterclass in subtle manipulation – a delicate dance of evasions and carefully chosen words. We'll explore the rhythm of the conversations, the unspoken anxieties, and how the characters' language reveals their true intentions. The core question: Can you feel the deception in the words themselves? We’ll play with the idea of voice – Hammett’s and the characters’. I'll share my own thoughts on how the story’s impact is shaped by its unique narrative voice. Plus, we’ll discuss the unsettling nature of “arsenic flypaper” itself – a detail that highlights the story’s dark core. Let’s build a real conversation around the power of language in Flypaper . Una Venganza : Exploring Trauma, Love, and Forgiveness (en Espanol)
¡Bienvenidos a Book Chat with You! An Act of Vengeance: Exploring Trauma, Love, and Forgiveness
In this episode Matthew Hernandez discusses Isabel Allende’s ‘An Act of Vengeance.’ Matthew explores the story’s complex themes of vengeance, forgiveness, and the surprising ways trauma can shape the human heart. This isn’t a typical literary dissection; it’s a meandering conversation – much like the story itself – about the difficulty of letting go of the past, the potential for transformation, and the blurred lines between obsession and love. Matthew's reflections aren't polished analyses, but rather raw, unfiltered reactions, mirroring the story’s fragmented feel. We delve into the Senator’s corruption, Rosa’s enduring pain, and the unsettling twist of a love story emerging from a scene of violence. Matthew grapples with the story's unsettling questions: Can vengeance truly bring resolution? What role does forgiveness play in healing? And can a profound connection blossom even amidst the darkest of circumstances? This episode is a reminder that sometimes the most profound stories are found not in grand narratives, but in the quiet moments of reflection and emotional reckoning. Join Matthew as he explores the story's ambiguities – and invites you to consider your own experiences with trauma, forgiveness, and the enduring power of the human spirit. Twin Beds in Rome: Reflections on Small Annoyances
In this episode, Matthew Hernandez explores John Updike’s ‘Twin Beds and Roam,’ a story that delves into the seemingly insignificant details of a couple’s vacation in Rome. This isn't a typical literary dissection; it’s a meandering conversation – much like the story itself – about the complexities of relationships, the frustrations of travel, and the deeply personal anxieties that can simmer beneath the surface. Matthew's reflections aren't polished analyses, but rather raw, unfiltered reactions, mirroring the story’s fragmented feel. We explore Richard Maples’ persistent aches, Joan’s empathetic responses, and the frustrating realities of travel, particularly the feeling of being subtly ripped off. This episode is a reminder that sometimes the most profound stories are found not in grand narratives, but in the quiet moments of everyday life. ‘A&P’ Deep Dive: Supermarket and Rebellion
Today, Matt Hernandez dives headfirst into John Updike’s “A&P,” a seemingly simple snapshot of a supermarket that packs a powerful punch. Matt’s not just offering an interpretation; he’s grappling with the story's layers of observation, performance, and unspoken tensions, much like he’d do with Carol Shields’ “Scenes.” He’s inviting you to join in, exploring questions like: What does it mean to ‘quit’? How much of our behavior is performative? And what do a supermarket and a teenager have in common? Like exploring a new grocery store, Matt considers the story’s details – the three girls in bathing suits, Sammy’s boss, the act of ‘I quit’ – and links them to larger themes of American culture, generational differences, and the anxieties of the modern workplace. Just like in ‘Scenes’, this story is a single scene that sparks contemplation and invites us to examine our own behaviors and perspectives. Scenes: Fragmented Moments
In this episode, Matthew Hernandez delves into Carol Shields’ “Scenes,” a story that feels less like a narrative and more like a collection of fragmented moments. He reflects on the story's central theme – the randomness of life, the fleeting nature of memory, and the beauty found in unexpected details. Matthew Hernandez doesn't offer a polished analysis; instead, he shares his genuine, unfiltered reactions, mirroring the story’s own disjointed feel. He contemplates the challenges of capturing life’s complexities, the impact of random encounters, and the way memories resurface at the most unexpected times. This episode is a reminder to slow down, to notice the small things, and to embrace the messiness of human experience. Join Matthew Hernandez as he wrestles with the story's implications and invites you to share your own interpretations. Poaching - How to Converse with Strangers
Poaching is another short story by Carol Shields. I enjoyed this story because it is quite relaxing. Not much goes on. Dobey and the unnamed narrator pick up hitch-hikers to hear their stories. That's it. My guess is they are some form of researchers therefore they must do this otherwise it seems like a dangerous past-time. The story is quite simple, they wake up a hotel then the unnamed narrator tells us of two recent hitch-hikers and a bit of a third one. The narrator says how they get people talking and their own rules about listening to the hitch-hikers. That's it. It's a Lousy Life - A Noir Conversation
Dive into the shadowy world of noir with ‘Book Chat with You’ as we dissect Bill Pronzini’s It's a Lousy Life! In this episode, we aren't just summarizing the story; we’re sparking a conversation. Matt Hernandez, your host, guides us through a classic in San Francisco Thrillers – a collection of noir short stories – exploring the familiar tropes and lingering questions. We’ll unpack the frustratingly nameless detective, Erberhart, his strained relationship with a wrongly convicted friend, and the bizarre circumstances surrounding Collie Babcock’s murder. Matt’s self-deprecating commentary and genuine curiosity are the driving force, prompting discussion about clichés, the allure of detective fiction, and the unsettling power of a perfectly constructed mystery. This episode is a deep dive into the narrative’s core questions: What motivates the detective? How does the setting – a city seen as an open-air prison – shape the story? And, most importantly, should we be so quick to dismiss familiar tropes? Join Matt as he grapples with the story’s questions – and his own critical assessment. We’ll cover key moments, including Erberhart’s terse interactions, the details of the crime scene, and the overall impact of the story’s atmosphere. 012 Chatting about "Mrs Turner Cutting the Grass" by Carol Shields
"Mrs Turner Cutting the Grass" is a short story about a Girlie Turner, who is an elderly woman who cares nothing about appearances, and a professor who writes a poem about Mrs Turner and her two sisters. The narration is quite interesting in that is abruptly changes focus from Mrs Turner to the professor who write a humorous poem about Mrs Turner and her sisters. What I most took from it was the pretentiousness of the professor but as I kept rereading this story I found humor in what the professor likely saw in Girlie Turner. 002 Chatting about Archie 2015 Vol 1
I always liked Archie comics growing up. So, I was quick to buy a set of Archie comics on Humble Bundle. These have always been wholesome comics about a group of teenagers in the fictional town of Riverdale. I originally made this video years ago in February 2021. 001 Chatting about A Man from Planet Earth by Giancarlo Genta
A Man from Planet by Giancarlo Genta is a scientific novel. It is about a scientists named Tom who is recruited by aliens to lead a galactic war. I recorded this videos years ago, so it's a bit from my archives. At the time I was having bad headaches which contributed to my stuttering. Podcast Introduction: Book Chat with You
My goal is to create an environment about you. I want to create a space for us to talk about literature together. Most talking heads want to tell you what they think and what you should think. Don't get me wrong, at some point I'll give you my thoughts on this or that or my life experience. I'll try to keep it to a minimum and just enough to build credibility. The most essential part of art and especially literature are the conversations. We must chat and share what we think about texts.
