Episode 6: Of Change, Connection, Community and Continuity

In Episode 6, we celebrate one year of the podcast! We talk about our Hari Raya celebrations this year at the iconic Sultan Mosque. We also honour the iconic Warung Nasi Padang Pariaman that closed its doors earlier this year, after 70 years in Kampung Gelam, and our intergenerational friendship with the Pariaman family. In the midst of the challenges facing Kampung Gelam, from the loss of heritage businesses to soaring rentals, we talk about the importance of speaking up, speaking out and speaking for the things that matter most to us, not just as Kampung Gelam residents, but what this says about our values as Singaporeans. Let us know what you think of our episode! Episode 5: Kampung Gelam — Carpets, Challenges and Community: A Chat with Mr Saeid Labbafi

In Episode 5, we have a very engaging chat with our long-time neighbour, Mr Saeid Labbafi, the Chairman of the Kampung Gelam Alliance and a very passionate and committed member of the Kampung Gelam business community. While we have had many chats with various Kampung Gelam stakeholders, this is hands down the most inspiring and hopeful conversation we've had about our beloved neighbourhood.Mr Saeid gave us an insightful perspective into his challenges, hopes and visions for keeping the soul of Kampung Gelam alive. There were so many more questions we wanted to ask but we had limited time. We do hope this episode serves as a conversation starter among our Alunan Kampung Gelam community and anyone else concerned about our historic neighbourhood, especially in the wake of the recent news coverage about exorbitant rental hikes by greedy landlords in Kampung Gelam (published after we recorded this interview).Let us know what you think of our episode! And if there's anything in particular you'd like to know about Kampung Gelam, feel free to share your suggestions with us on Instagram (instagram.com/alunankampunggelam).Alunan Kampung Gelam's YouTube channel: youtube.com/@alunankampunggelamKampung Gelam Place Plan: listeningtokg.org(Original music by Almira Farid)
