Episode 35: It's Not Me, It's My Hormones

We've been saying "it's probably just my hormones" for years- and then doing absolutely nothing about it. Today that changes.   I'm sitting down with Cheyenna Kopacz, family nurse practitioner and hormone replacement therapy specialist, and we are getting into ALL of it. The 2002 study that made an entire generation terrified of hormones (and why they quietly walked it down). Why brain fog, insomnia, and low libido are not just part of being human. The 80% reduction in Alzheimer's risk tied to estradiol. What your thyroid has to do with your fertility. And why you are absolutely allowed-actually, encouraged- to interview your provider.  We also dive into tampons. You'll want to hear about that. If you'e ever walked out of an appointment feeling dismissed, unheard, or like you still don't have answers-this one's for you.    Find Cheyenna at @at_your_doorstep_medical on Instagram, Tiktok at_your_doorstep_medical, and you can visit her webiste for a free intro call. At Your Doorstep Medical This episode is sponsored by Bump to Boob- Amey's of Azbreastfedbabies prenatal breastfeeding class desgined to help you prepare before baby arrives.

Episode 34: Why Moms Are The Last To Ask For Help

Moms are the least likely demographic to ask for help. The people holding it all together for everyone else are the last ones to raise their hand. In this solo episode, Charity gets honest about why that happens, what societal conditioning has to do with it, and how social media sits right in the middle of making it better...and worse. She talks about postpatrtum anxiety stats, maternal mental health, the power of safe communities, and why shame has never made anyone a better mother. This is for the mom who says "I'm fine" before the question is ever finished.  Support Resources: Circle  @azbreastfedbabies Mental Health Support

Episode 32: What No One Tells You About Birth (But Your Doula Should)

If you've ever felt like birth didn't go the way you planned, or like you've been left carrying something heavy after, this is for you. Charity sits down with Patricia, a birth doula with 15 years of experience and over 1,100 births, to pull back the curtain on what actually happens in the birth room. They get into the myths that social media won't stop spreading, what COVID permanently changed about hospital births, whay talking about the scary stuff is actually what protects you, and the one thing Patricia tells every single mom needs, but won't ask for. Fair warning: this conversation gets real.      Resources: Modern Mama- a doula agency that offers birth support, postpartum care, childbirth education, and an upcoming induction prep course.  https://www.modernmamadoula.com Cocoon to Bloom- In-person bodywork sessions, multi-day intensives for babies, moms, and adults. Episode 31: Why Your Baby Might Be Fussy (It's Not What You Think)

In this episode of Call Your Mom Friends, Charity sits down with CFT practitioner Joanna Cox to talk about something most parents are not often told about: The Nervous System. From birth stories to fussy babies, latch issues, sleep struggles, and emotional overwhelm, this conversation connects the dots between what's happening in your baby's body and what may be happening in yours, too. We talk about: -why babies hold tension and how it can show up -the connection between mom and baby's nervous systems -why sometimes it is not actually the baby who needs the most support -how bodywork can impact feeding, sleep, and behavior -why this work matters during pregnancy, not just after birth This episode is honest, real, and might completely change the way you think about your baby's needs.     *]:pointer-events-auto [content-visibility:auto] supports-[content-visibility:auto]:[contain-intrinsic-size:auto_100lvh] R6Vx5W_threadScrollVars scroll-mb-[calc(var(--scroll-root-safe-area-inset-bottom,0px)+var(--thread-response-height))] scroll-mt-[calc(var(--header-height)+min(200px,max(70px,20svh)))]" dir="auto" data-turn-id= "request-WEB:910c429f-b4ce-4a82-b65a-38e94b7eb619-7" data-testid= "conversation-turn-16" data-scroll-anchor="false" data-turn= "assistant"> Some cliff notes: Craniosacral Facial Therapy (CFT), taught by Barry Gillespie, is gentle whole-body approach that works through the mouth, face, sacrum, occiput, and fascia to both open the cranial system and create changes throughout the entire body. It intentionally integrates the cranial and fascial systems together, rather than treating them separately, which can lead to more structural and functional shifts. Craniosacral Therapy (CST), developed by John Upledger, also works with the cranial system but tends to be even lighter and more focused on the nervous system and fluid rhythms. I've done some CST too, but I resonate more with CFT because it combines cranial opening with that full-body fascial approach.   This episode is brought to you by Cocoon to Bloom. We offer in-person bodywork sessions and multi-day intensives for babies, children, and adults to support the nervous system and help the body function with more ease. Episode 30: The Reality of Returning to Work After a Baby (No One Talks About This)

STOP SCROLLING—because no one warned you how brutal going back to work after baby actually feels. You plan for birth. You build the registry. You take the classes. But no one prepares you for the moment maternity leave ends—and suddenly you're expected to be a fully functioning employee while your heart is still at home with your baby. 😵‍💫 In this raw, mom-to-mom episode of Call Your Mom Friends, we're getting real about the transition nobody talks about enough: returning to work postpartum. Whether you're heading back to a hospital shift, logging in from your kitchen floor with a baby in your lap, or realizing "working from home" still means… working (and figuring out childcare 😅), this conversation is for you. We're diving into: ✨ The emotional whiplash of leaving your baby (even when you love your job) ✨ The mental load of pumping, bottle prep, childcare logistics, and workplace convos ✨ Why "maternity leave = a break" is the biggest lie ever told ✨ The reality of short U.S. maternity leave vs. other countries (and why it matters) ✨ Work-from-home myths that sound dreamy but hit different in real life ✨ Setting boundaries, shifting careers, and redefining what "balance" even means now ✨ The truth about maternal mental health—and why the system isn't supporting moms Plus, we're sharing personal stories—from quitting jobs on the spot to pumping during 12-hour shifts—and the honest, messy, emotional in-between that every working mom experiences but rarely says out loud. If you've ever Googled "how to go back to work after having a baby," "pumping at work laws," "postpartum return to work anxiety," or "how moms balance work and newborn life"—this episode is basically your group chat in podcast form. 🎧 Hit play if you need validation, real talk, and a reminder that you're not the only one figuring this out as you go. And hey—send this to a mom friend who's counting down (or dreading) that return-to-work date. Episode 29: Tiny Mouths, Big Opinions: The Truth About Tongue Ties and Airway Health

Tongue ties and lip ties have officially entered the controversial parenting category. Some say they're overdiagnosed. Others call them a trend. Meanwhile, babies are struggling to feed, moms are in pain, and parents are left wondering what's actually true. In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Janelle Lee, a pediatric dentist who takes an airway-focused approach to oral health. Instead of only looking at teeth and gums, she looks at the bigger picture—breathing, sleep, feeding, jaw development, and long-term oral function. Together we unpack the nuance behind tongue ties, including: • What tongue ties actually are (and when they matter) • Why a release isn't always a "magic fix" • The role of bodywork, lactation support, and therapy • How tongue function impacts breathing, sleep, and development • Why some babies seem fine… until feeding or speech issues appear later • The connection between narrow palates, mouth breathing, and airway health We also talk about the biggest misconceptions parents hear online and how to think through decisions around treatment. If you've ever wondered whether tongue ties are overdiagnosed, misunderstood, or something worth paying attention to, this episode will give you a much clearer picture. Dr. Lee also shares how airway-centered dentistry can help children and adults improve breathing, sleep, and overall quality of life. Episode 28: Apparently Formula Fixes Marriage? Let's Talk About the Real Mental Load

So apparently the secret to marriage equality is… formula? Yeah. We had some thoughts. In this episode of Call Your Mom Friends, Amey (IBCLC), Lauren (labor nurse), and Charity (bodyworker) are diving into the New York Times opinion piece that set mom-internet on fire and unpacking the bigger conversation around breastfeeding, formula feeding, and the idea that feeding your baby determines how "equal" your marriage is. Spoiler: it's a lot more complicated than that. We talk about the reality of newborn life—the invisible mental load, the pressure moms feel about literally everything, and the guilt that somehow sneaks into every parenting decision (epidural, C-section, pacifiers, bottles… you name it). We also get real about breastfeeding: • the evidence-based benefits • the moments when it feels magical • and the moments when you might say a few choice words while latching a baby at 3 a.m. Plus, we share actual helpful ways partners can show up during the newborn stage—because feeding the baby is only one tiny piece of the puzzle. Whether you're breastfeeding, formula feeding, combo feeding, pumping, or just trying to keep everyone alive and somewhat rested… this episode is your reminder that parenting works best when we drop the guilt and call our mom friends. Episode 27: We're Back (Turns Out the Village Needed a Nap)

We said we were taking a short break. It turned into… a season. But your village did not disappear — we just had surgeries, allergic reactions, business launches, fertility plot twists, travel chaos, toddler tantrums, and a full-blown adulting era to survive first. In this re-entry episode of Call Your Mom Friends, Amey (IBCLC), Lauren (labor nurse), and Charity (bodyworker) are catching you up on everything: • Amey's bone conduction hearing implant and opening Bump to Baby AZ in North Phoenix • Lauren leaving hospital life, firing her fertility clinic (yes, really), and navigating the wild west of self-employment + TTC • Charity's world-traveling era, family pivots, and Renaissance Festival confessions • The very real fear of having a second baby • What it actually looks like to bet on yourself • And why sometimes the bravest thing you can do is take the break you didn't plan on It's honest. It's messy. It's a little spicy. And it's exactly why we started this podcast in the first place. Your village is here. We just needed a minute. Holiday season + a newborn = a magical little cocktail of joy, germs, travel anxiety, and relatives who somehow forget that babies are not community property. In today's episode of Call Your Mom Friends, Amey (IBCLC), Lauren (labor nurse), and Charity (bodyworker) answer a mom friend's call all about navigating the holidays with her tiny December baby—and we go there. Episode 25: The Great Pacifier Debate—Let's Ruffle Some Mama Feathers

This week on Call Your Mom Friends, your mom friends Amey (IBCLC), Lauren (labor nurse), and Charity (bodyworker) dive into one of the most surprisingly controversial baby topics out there—pacifiers. Love them, hate them, confused by them? Same. In this episode, the moms break down the opinions, the science, and the real-life stories behind the little silicone wonders (or villains, depending on who you ask). From why some babies cling to pacis and others refuse them, to how pacifiers affect oral development, feeding, tongue mobility, and even the vagus nerve (yep, we go there). The ladies share the professional guidance they give families every day—mixed with the honesty and humor you expect from this show. You'll hear: • Why waiting a few weeks before introducing a pacifier actually matters • Which styles support healthy oral function—and which to skip • Red flags that your baby may be relying on a pacifier for nervous system regulation • How tongue ties, oversupply, and feeding struggles can change the paci conversation • Why some toddlers have meltdowns over taking it away (and what's happening in their bodies) • Real stories from each host's own babies—what worked, what didn't, and what they'd do differently And of course, there are highs and lows, updates on the new Bump to Baby AZ space, fertility victories, juggling toddlers during recording (Lauren deserves a trophy), and plenty of laughter. If you've ever wondered Should my baby use a pacifier? For how long? Is this hurting their tongue? Am I messing this up? — this episode will feel like one big exhale. No guilt. No judgment. Episode 23: Please Stop Breathing So Loud — An Episode for Overstimulated Moms

🚨 If the sound of a chip bag, a noisy toy, or your partner's breathing has ever sent you straight to your "I need to hide in the pantry" era… this episode is for you. In this episode of Call Your Mom Friends, we're talking about full-body sensory overload — the official membership requirements of the Overstimulated Mom's Club. From noisy toys and toddlers shattering glass mid-phone call, to the chaos of breastfeeding, pumping, snack bags, and trying to finish a sentence without being touched —Amey (IBCLC), Lauren (labor nurse), and Charity (bodyworker) peel back all the layers of why modern motherhood is so overstimulating… and what the heck to do about it. ✨ In this episode, you'll hear about: • The real reasons moms hit their "don't touch me" limit • How caffeine, blood sugar, and skipped meals push you into sensory overload • Why clutter, background TV, toy explosions, and barking dogs make you snap • Nervous system regulation tools you can actually use (tapping, breathwork, movement, dimming lights, micro-escapes) • The "grizzly bear in the room" concept Charity teaches her CFT families — and why your body won't calm down when it doesn't feel safe • Why bodywork and support for moms too can change the entire household vibe • Huge lactation + postpartum gems: bottle refusal help, weaning support, milk suppression done safely, starting solids, combination feeding, and more If your nervous system is fried, your toddler is melting down, your dog is licking loudly, and the TV is blaring Paw Patrol for the 600th time — take a breath, grab your headphones, and come sit with your mom friends. Episode 22: She's a Baby, Not a Labrador—The Myth of the Good Baby

🎙️ Is Your Baby "Good"… or Just a Tiny Dictator in Footie Pajamas? If you've ever been asked "Is she a good baby?" and had to resist replying, "Define good… morally?" — this episode is your love letter. In this episode of Call Your Mom Friends, Amey (IBCLC), Lauren (labor nurse), and Charity (bodyworker) are calling out the "good baby" culture that makes moms feel like their worth depends on nap schedules and nighttime feeds. From mom guilt and unsolicited Aunt Susan advice, to murder mystery parties gone rogue (yes, with a prop gun), we're getting real about what makes a baby "good" and how we can brag differently. You'll laugh, nod, and probably text your mom friends mid-episode with "same." Because here's the truth — good babies cry, good moms cry, and good friends talk about it all. ✨ In this episode, you'll hear about: The myth of the "good baby" and how it messes with new moms Real talk on responsive parenting and trusting your instincts Why community (and maybe the No Bra Club) is the real secret to surviving motherhood Mothers often face societal pressure regarding their baby's behavior. Parents should focus on individual baby needs rather than comparisons. Support for mothers is crucial in early parenting. Reframing the conversation around baby behavior is necessary. So grab your lukewarm coffee, hide in the Target parking lot if you need to, and let's rewrite what "good" really means — together. ✨ Don't miss 'Call Waiting' — our mom-friend call-in segment where real moms share raw, hilarious, and relatable stories you won't hear in the school pickup line. 🎧 Got a story? Episode 21: Let's Talk Crap (Literally): Potty Training Without Losing Your Sanity

You knew this day would come… the diapers are expensive, your toddler's hiding behind the couch to poop, and you're starting to question if they'll ever graduate from Pull-Ups. Welcome to the potty training trenches, mama. In this episode, the Call Your Mom Friends crew: Amey (IBCLC), Lauren (labor nurse), and Charity (bodyworker) get real about all things potty training—from naked weekends gone wrong to the marketing myths that made us believe we have to "wait until they're ready." We're breaking down the mess, the myths, and the milestones with plenty of laughs (and maybe a few poop jokes). You'll hear why early potty training used to be the norm, what elimination communication actually is, and how trauma, nervous system regulation, and even birth experiences can play a role in your child's potty journey. Plus, we share the best bribes (hello, poop parties 🎉) and why sometimes the best advice is simply: be kind, grab some disinfectant wipes, and know you're not alone. Whether you're knee-deep in sticker charts or just gathering courage for your first diaper-free weekend, this episode's for you. ✨ In this episode, you'll hear about: Potty training can be one of the most daunting stages of parenting. Every child is different, and readiness for potty training varies. Parents often face judgment regarding their child's potty training progress. Creative approaches, like poop parties, can make potty training fun. Understanding a child's background can help in addressing potty training challenges. The diaper industry has influenced societal expectations around potty training age. Elimination communication is an alternative approach to potty training. Support from friends and community is crucial during parenting challenges. Episode 20: Public, Charter, or Homeschool? (Asking for a Mom Friend)

Choosing a school shouldn't feel like choosing your child's destiny — but here we are, panic-Googling "best school near me" at 11 p.m. In this episode of Call Your Mom Friends, Amey (IBCLC), Lauren (labor nurse), and Charity (bodyworker) get real about school choice — from public vs. charter vs. homeschooling to the guilt, judgment, and what if I mess this up? spiral every mom knows too well. Between laughs, mom-life meltdowns, and one epic Google review rant, they unpack the emotional load of raising kids while trying to make "the right" decision (whatever that means). It's part parenting podcast, part therapy session, and all-around reminder that there's no perfect path — just real moms, real talk, and maybe a few cold nuggets along the way. Because motherhood doesn't come with a user manual — but it does come with friends who get it. ✨ In this episode, you'll hear about: Charity launched a mental health t-shirt initiative. Parenting comes with both highs and lows, especially with toddlers. Running a business can be overwhelming, especially with client interactions. School choices are a significant decision for parents, impacting family dynamics. Different educational methods, like Montessori and unschooling, cater to various learning styles. Parents often feel judged for their schooling choices, leading to stress. Community support is vital for parents navigating challenges in education. 🎃 Is your Halloween more Pinterest-perfect or last-minute "grab cat ears and call it good"? Either way, this Call Waiting mini-episode is stuffed fuller than a candy bucket with mom hacks, hilarious costume fails, and creative ideas for family traditions. From family Halloween costume inspo (think Star Wars, Disney, Toy Story, and yes—even a Costco-themed crew) to neighborhood trick-or-treat chaos, Amey (IBCLC), Lauren (labor nurse), and Charity (bodyworker) get real about what works, what flops, and how to keep the magic alive for your kids. You'll also hear about the Switch Witch tradition (a genius sugar-swap idea every parent should know), plus nostalgic throwbacks to sweaty plastic masks and trading candy like it was Wall Street. If you're a mom navigating Halloween with kids, costumes on a budget, trunk-or-treating, pumpkin patches, or family holiday traditions, this conversation will leave you laughing, nodding, and maybe even planning your next spooky season with a little less stress and a lot more fun. 👻 Because at the end of the day, it's not about perfect costumes—it's about making memories your kids will never forget.   ✨ In this episode, you'll hear about: Halloween costumes can be a mix of creativity and nostalgia. Family themes for costumes can be fun but not necessary. Neighborhood participation can greatly enhance Halloween experiences. The Switch Witch tradition offers a fun way to manage candy consumption. Crafting costumes can be a joyful activity for families. Alternatives like trunk-or-treats can be great for younger children. Traditions create lasting memories for children and families. Episode 18: Tell Me Lies, Sweet Little Baby Lies: The Mom Myths We're Tired Of.

Ever been asked, "Is your baby sleeping through the night yet?" and wanted to throw a rattle at someone? Same. In this episode of Call Your Mom Friends, Amey (IBCLC), Lauren (labor nurse), and Charity (bodyworker) get real about the biggest lies new moms are told—from the myth of magical overnight sleepers to diaper industry marketing ploys that keep us buying boxes for way too long. We kick things off with the highs and lows of mom life (think girls' trips with toddlers, unexpected bathtub confessions, and a Jonas Brothers concert for "mental health"). But the heart of this conversation? Unpacking the myths of modern motherhood: nighttime parenting, breastfeeding "rules," pacifiers, tongue ties, sleep training, and how techy baby gadgets sometimes mess with our instincts more than they help. You'll laugh, nod along, and maybe even shout "PREACH" at your phone. Because here's the truth: there's no one-size-fits-all to raising babies—and if someone says otherwise, well…we've got receipts (and science). Tune in for the mom truths, the giggles, and the solidarity you need to feel a little less alone on this wild ride from bump to baby (and beyond). ✨ In this episode, you'll hear about: Parenting comes with both highs and lows, including travel experiences. The pressure to have babies sleep through the night is a common myth. Mindful use of parenting products is essential. Breastfeeding is often misunderstood as being easy, but it has its challenges. Community support is crucial for new parents. Technology can both help and hinder parenting instincts. The dyad of mother and baby needs to be addressed together. Episode 16: Lose Yourself (in the Mom Life): When Parenting Went Online — and Never Logged Off in the 2000s

BRB...baby is waking up! Before Instagram mom-fluencers, there were mommy blogs, baby boards, and enough Google searches to fuel a helicopter. We're reminiscing on what it was like raising babies in the 2000s. Remember when we thought Y2K was going to end the world—and instead it just ushered in helicopter parenting, mommy blogs, and sippy cup debates? In this episode of Call Your Mom Friends, Amey (IBCLC), Lauren (labor nurse), and Charity (bodyworker), rewind to the 2000s and unpack what it was like to raise kids in a decade that gave us Google, mom-shaming message boards, and the golden age of Disney Channel (hello, Lizzie McGuire and High School Musical). From preschool waitlists and Montessori debates to Britney Spears' very public postpartum struggles, we get real about the pressures, the humor, and the chaos of early-2000s parenting. Whether you're curious about how millennial moms survived the information overload, or you just want a nostalgic stroll through diaper recalls, minivans, and the dawn of "mommy wars," this episode is packed with laughs, lessons, and a healthy dose of parenting reality. Dig out those Juicy Couture tracksuits, put that RAZR in your back pocket, and tune in for a witty, honest, and slightly snarky look at what it meant to be a mom in the 2000s—and how it shaped the way we parent today. ✨ In this episode, you'll hear about: Parenting in the 2000s was marked by information overload. Helicopter parenting became prevalent during this decade. Technology changed how parents interacted with their children. The rise of online mom shaming began in the 2000s. Many parents felt pressured to perform parenting for social media. The shift to structured playdates reduced spontaneous outdoor play. Schooling challenges led some parents to choose homeschooling. Mommy wars intensified with the advent of social media. Parents today face overwhelming amounts of parenting advice online. ✨ Fridays are for Call Waiting — our weekly mom-friend call-in segment where real moms share raw, hilarious, and relatable stories you won't hear in the school pickup line. 🎧 Got a story? In this episode of Call Your Mom Friends, Amey (IBCLC), Lauren (labor nurse), and Charity (bodyworker) dive into the realities of giving birth in the 2000s, from online pregnancy forums to the rise of C-section births (one in three, to be exact). They unpack how culture shaped birth stories, why VBAC options were often shut down, and how sometimes hospitals felt like an "assembly line of births", deviating from the patient's natural labor progression. The conversation blends raw honesty with humor as Amey shares her 2000 labor and delivery nurse experiences and own births within the decade. The three moms also reflect on the cultural impact of births with TV shows and documentaries like The Business of Being Born. Motherhood: the only job where your boss leaks on you, screams at you, and still gets all your heart. In this Call Waiting mini-episode, Amey (IBCLC) and Lauren (labor nurse) unpack a raw and honest voicemail from a new mom navigating the messy magic of postpartum life. From second-degree tears that feel like a Brillo pad scrub, to boobs that leak on their own schedule, to the bittersweet reality of being "touched out" yet never wanting to hand over your baby—this conversation gets real about the chaos that follows birth.  Amey and Lauren dish out some truth: talking about postpartum rage (sometimes aimed at husbands, sometimes at barking dogs), the myth of the "perfect baby schedule," and why it's okay if dinner sometimes happens in the bathtub. But it's not all leaky boobs and sleepless nights—there's also the moment that keeps moms going: that first gummy baby smile at 2 a.m. (a.k.a. nature's ultimate bribe to keep doing the impossible). Amey and Lauren weave in wisdom from their work with new parents, insights from The Fourth Trimester, and reminders that asking for help isn't weakness—it's survival. ✨ Remember when breastfeeding in public was scandalous but Blockbuster late fees were totally normal? That's right we're heading to the 90s. In this episode of Call Your Mom Friends, Amey (IBCLC), Lauren (labor nurse), and Charity (bodyworker) rewind to the rollercoaster of birth and breastfeeding in the 1990s. Think the 90s were all boy bands and Beanie Babies? Try growing rates of intervention, epidurals, and formula freebies. From VBAC highs and epidural explosions to the pump boom (hello, Medela glow-up!) and postpartum depression finally getting named, we're spilling the tea on what motherhood looked like when Discmen skipped with every step. Expect punchy stories, a little pop culture nostalgia (does hearing AOL dial-up trigger you?), and plenty of "wait, what?!" moments as the hosts break down how hospital policies, formula marketing, and celebrity home births shaped an entire generation of moms (yes, Pamela Anderson had a water birth in her Malibu bathroom). We also dive into the rise of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative — a global push to support breastfeeding moms — and why American hospitals were slow to get on board. So grab your scrunchie, slip into that velour tracksuit, and prepare for a trip back to when your Tamagotchi dangled from your keychain and pumping at work meant a folding chair in a janitor's closet. Because the 90s may have been a mixed bag — but they definitely birthed some unforgettable stories. ✨ In this episode, you'll hear about: The 90s saw a rise in breastfeeding rates despite formula marketing. Postpartum depression was officially recognized in the 90s, leading to better support. The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative aimed to promote breastfeeding but faced challenges in the US. Celebrities like Pamela Anderson and Demi Moore influenced public perception of home births. The culture of hospitals in the 90s often pushed for medical interventions over natural birth. Breast pumps became more accessible, aiding working mothers in breastfeeding. Mental health support for new mothers began to gain recognition in the 90s. Were you one of those kids who was tossed a Capri Sun and told to "be home when the streetlights come on"? If so, you already know parenting in the 80s was a different world—equal parts freedom and firm discipline. In this episode of Call Your Mom Friends, Amey (IBCLC), Lauren (labor nurse), and Charity (bodyworker) rewind to a decade of free-range childhoods, spanking, and food trends that were basically neon science experiments. Join us as we journey back to the 1980s, exploring parenting during a time when seatbelts were optional, and MTV was the latest craze. The hosts swap stories about grounding without gadgets, the rise of "stranger danger," and why a backyard and a Big Wheel were all the entertainment you needed. From iconic movie one-liners to parenting "expert" advice that hasn't exactly aged well, we're laughing, cringing, and questioning how this decade's kids even survived. Nostalgia for the 80s reminds us of a simpler time—but was it really better, or just different? Together, we consider what lessons today's parents (and tomorrow's kids) can carry forward. Discover how the pendulum has swung from survival mode to information overload, and why a little 80s parenting energy might just be what we need today.  ✨ In this episode, you'll hear about: Parenting in the 80s was more hands-off compared to today. Discipline methods have evolved significantly over the decades. Cultural influences from the 80s shaped childhood experiences. Food trends in the 80s included processed snacks and neon-colored drinks. The concept of 'stranger danger' became prominent during the 80s. From routine episiotomies to the first IBCLCs, we're unpacking the myths, the milestones, and why your support team still matters. This week your mom friends are swapping highs and lows (because let's be real—motherhood always delivers both!) before rewinding to the 1980s version of birth. Think "clean babies" on TV vs. the messy reality, the rise of fetal monitoring, and a culture that often sent babies to the nursery instead of rooming-in. Amey dives into the history with the 1985 launch of the IBCLC credential—finally giving breastfeeding support a leg to stand on after all the "breast is best" messaging. It's nostalgic, a little shocking, and full of the real talk you only get from your mom friends. Grab your coffee, pull up a chair, and let's go there together. Who This Episode Is For Expecting parents curious about birth history; moms navigating grief milestones; anyone wanting a clear, friendly primer on EFM, VBAC, breastfeeding support, episiotomy, nursery vs. rooming-in, and the cascade of interventions—told by a nurse, an IBCLC, and a bodyworker. Episode 4: Babies, Beer, & Birth Commutes: Parenting in the 70s

What did parenting really look like in the 1970s? Spoiler: no car seats, SpaghettiOs for dinner, and yes—smoking in the delivery room. In this episode of Call Your Mom Friends, Charity, Lauren, and Amey swap highs and lows of the week before diving deep into the fascinating, funny, and downright shocking parenting norms of the 70s. We chat about legendary midwife Ina May Gaskin and her work at The Farm—a natural birth commune in Tennessee that changed the way America thought about childbirth. Then, we contrast it with the hospital scene of the decade, where doctors lit up cigarettes during labor. From teething whiskey and Tang, to latchkey kids and hot metal playgrounds, we unpack how parenting looked in a very different era—and why some of those "retro vibes" still linger today. ✨ In this episode, you'll hear about: - The rise of Ina May Gaskin and how The Farm became iconic in the natural birth movement - Smoke-filled hospital rooms and doctors recommending cigarettes during pregnancy - "Teething remedies" like rubbing whiskey on baby gums (yikes) - SpaghettiOs, Tang, and other pantry staples of the decade - Pop culture snapshots: Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Charlotte's Web, Little House on the Prairie - Unsafe toys and playgrounds that shaped a generation - Baby names that defined the 70s (hello, Jennifer and Michael!) If you love parenting history, birth stories, or a good "wait, WHAT?!" moment, this episode will have you laughing, cringing, and grateful for how far we've come. 🎧 Listen in and leave us a voicemail → Click Here 📌 Resources & Links Mentioned in the Show: Lauren's FREE Birth Class The Farm Community Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin Find us on Instagram: @call.your.mom.friends.podcast And connect with us individually: Lauren Murdock | Faith > Fear Birth™ → @labor.lauren | laborlauren.com Amey Fields | AZ Breastfed Babies → @az.breastfedbabies | azbreastfedbabies.com Charity Spears | Cocoon to Bloom → @cocoon_to_bloom | cocoontobloom.com

Episode 3: Call Waiting | Think the Nurse Will Teach You Breastfeeding? Here's the Truth

In this Call Waiting episode of Call Your Mom Friends, we answer a call from Kelsey, a mom who believes hospital nurses need more training to better support new moms with breastfeeding. Sounds reasonable, right? But here's the twist — we play devil's advocate and explore why prenatal breastfeeding education before delivery might actually be more effective (and realistic) than waiting until you're in the hospital. We unpack: Why nurses often have limited time with new moms in busy hospital settings. The reality of short postpartum stays and how fatigue + hormones affect learning. Why prenatal childbirth and breastfeeding classes can set you up for long-term success. The role of IBCLCs (International Board Certified Lactation Consultants) in hospitals — and why access can vary widely. Flange sizing, pumping myths, and why early education matters for milk supply and mental health. The balance between hospital support and personal preparation so you can feel empowered, not overwhelmed. Whether you're expecting, preparing for birth, or reflecting on your postpartum experience, this episode will help you think differently about where real breastfeeding education should start. ✨ Bonus: We share why we offer free prenatal breastfeeding classes, plus resources like doulas, evidence-based books, and online support to bridge the gaps hospitals can't always fill. 👉 This episode is for every mama who's wondered: Will I get enough breastfeeding support in the hospital? or Should I prepare ahead of time?
